RECOVI Continues Supporting Vulnerable Children Through Education

On September 11, 2026, RECOVI (Réveil Communautaire d’Assistance aux Vulnérables), through its APEV program, continued its commitment to supporting vulnerable children in Burundi.

The activity took place in Kirekura, where 50 vulnerable children received essential school materials and school uniforms to help them begin and continue their education with dignity and confidence.

The activity was attended by Hermes Nyamutegera Secretary General of RECOVI, who represented the organization and encouraged the children to take their studies seriously, work hard and remain determined despite the challenges they may face.

Through the Assistance Program for Education of Vulnerable Children (APEV), RECOVI seeks to support children from vulnerable families and create better opportunities for them through education.

On September 10, 2025, RECOVI (Réveil Communautaire d’Assistance aux victimes), with the sponsorship of the RECOVI branch in Sweden, distributed school materials and uniforms to ten orphaned children from the village of Nyabitaka, located in the Buvyuko zone of Bubanza commune, and to 50 vulnerable children from the Ntahangwa commune, Maramvya zone in Bujumbura province.

These children were selected to be supported and monitored until the completion of their education. Previously, the association had provided goats to vulnerable families in these communities.

This time, 60 vulnerable school-aged children were chosen to benefit from educational support, enabling them to continue their studies until completion.

This initiative falls under the program entitled:
“Assistance Program for Education of Vulnerable Children in Burundi (APEV).”
It is a program that supports the most vulnerable children by sharing with their parents (who have raised them since an early age) the burden of education, while RECOVI takes full commitment to support the child from primary school until the completion of general secondary or post-basic education.

In their addresses to the children, the Vice President of RECOVI at the national level and the representatives of RECOVI in the communes of Bubanza and Bujumbura encouraged them to study with determination, reminding them that their country loves them and counts on them for the future. They also urged them to use the school supplies responsibly and to work hard in order to honor the association.

As global civil society coalitions working to reduce the catastrophic impact of war through humanitarian disarmament, we express grave concern that the ministers of defense from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have called on their countries to withdraw from the Mine Ban Treaty. Withdrawal would increase the risk of civilian death and injury from an indiscriminate weapon of limited military utility. It would also threaten decades of progress on disarmament and international humanitarian law more broadly.

The Mine Ban Treaty laid the foundation for “humanitarian disarmament,” which seeks to reduce arms-inflicted human suffering and environmental harm. Since its adoption in 1997, the treaty has saved many thousands of lives, prevented tens of thousands of life-changing injuries, and remediated the harm experienced by survivors through prohibitions on antipersonnel landmines and obligations to destroy stockpiles, clear minefields, and assist victims. The Mine Ban Treaty has further inspired cooperative efforts to establish norms governing other weapons. States, civil society, and international organizations have collaborated to address the humanitarian impacts of autonomous weapons systems, cluster mu*****ns, and nuclear weapons, as well as the arms trade and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.

While the states considering withdrawal from the Mine Ban Treaty have legitimate security concerns, abandoning a cornerstone of international law that underpins the protection of civilians during and after conflict is not the answer. At a time of heightened global conflict and challenges to multilateralism, states should recommit to humanitarian disarmament’s people-centered and cooperative approach. They should join forces to defend unequivocally the international law they collectively created and the humanitarian principles it embodies.

en date du 10/01/2025, RECOVI a lance pour la troisième fois son programme d'assistance pour une éducation des enfants vulnérables au Burundi (APEV: Assistance Program for Education of Vulnerable Children in Burundi). cet un programme qui assiste les enfants les plus vulnérables en partageant avec les parents (qui élève l'enfant depuis son bas âge) le fardeau qu'ils possèdent pour que RECOVI prenne son plein engagement qui consiste d'assister l'enfant depuis l'écolé primaire jusqu'à ce que l'enfant termine ses études des humanités générales ou de post-fondamental. APEV assiste l'enfant, en lui donnant des matériaux scolaires comme stylos, cahiers, uniformes et minerval s'il s'avère nécessaire. les parents sont appeles a collaborer avec les enfants selectiones par le biais de l'administration locale et les directeurs des ecoles tout en presentant les évidences de vulnérabilité de l'enfant. les enfants assistes par ce programme sont: les Orphelins, handicapes, les indigents, les albinos, les autochtones et les enfants avec le VIH.
cet année, APEC a été lance en Commune Mutimbuzi zone MARAMVYA, Colline KIREKURA. En Présence du Directeur Exécutif, Mr NGENZWANAYO Baptiste, les enfants ont été donnes des cadeaux de Noel composes par : les dentifrices, les savons, les chaussures, les stylos,..... il a interpelé les enfants de ne pas abandonner l'école car un enfant qui abandonnerait l'école sera supprimé dans le programme APEV. il a aussi indique que si un enfant réussisses avec une bonne note(imprécise) sera assiste dans les études universitaires. il a invite les parents a collaborer avec RECOVI pour qu'aucun enfant ne sort pas dans le programme APEV, sous prétexte qu'il/elle a manque de quoi a mange ou habille.

Le Monde entier célèbre une période de 16 jours d'activisme contre les violences basées sur le genre qui débute le 25 Novembre au 10 Décembre de chaque année; C'est dans cet optique qu'en date du 30 Novembre 2024, avec l'appui de l'IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms), RECOVI a organisé une activité en Commune Mutimbuzi qui avait un thème "Briser le Silence, stoper la Violence basée sur ke genre".
Les autorités locales, les représentants des forces de la securité Nationale, les femmes leaders des OSCs, les hommes et jeunes filles ont participé dans cette activité pour contribuer à la lutte contre les abus faits au filles et femmes. Monsieur Baptiste NGENZWANAYO, Directeur Executif de RECOVI, dans ses enseignements, a fait souligner qu'il ne faut jamais rester silencieux puisque le silence est l'un des instruments de la prolifération des abus faits aux femmes et filles. Aussi, l'impunité des coupables rend les malintentionés courageux vers la méchanceté et la communauté devient impuissante et peureuse. En concluant, il a interpellé la communauté de Mutimbuzi à dévoiler chaque fois les malfaiteurs et la justice à punir serieusement les coupables conformément à la loi.

RECOVI received an official invitation to participate in the 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (COP UNTOC), held from October 14-18 in Vienna, Austria. RECOVI was represented at the event by Eddy Kilimbu, who serves as Project Manager of RECOVI Sweden.
