Planning Well for Better Performance
From October 21st to 25th, 2025, the Burundian Association for Nature Protection (ABN) had the honor of hosting conservation experts, including Werner Schroder and Leonidas Momburi, from Tanzania. Their visit was part of the Umusambi Conservation Project, dedicated to the conservation of the Grey Crowned Crane, and funded by ZGAP.
As part of this visit, a two-day workshop was organized, bringing together our visitors, the project manager, the Executive Director of ABN, and the ABN Communications Officer. During this workshop, fruitful discussions took place on the strategies and approaches to adopt to ensure the project's success.
One of the key points addressed was how to identify and mobilize local champions for the project, capable of providing reliable information. These champions are individuals passionate about the conservation of the Grey Crowned Crane, ready to commit themselves and raise awareness within their communities about the importance of this species. Their involvement is crucial to achieving the main objective: increasing the Grey Crowned Crane population in the region.
Strategies and approaches were discussed to better achieve the established objective:
1. Raising Awareness in Local Communities
2. Monitoring and Protection Programs
3. Local Partnerships
4. Promoting Environmental Education
5. Implementing Sustainable Techniques
The project represents a strong commitment to biodiversity and the well-being of local communities. It is possible to change the course of events for this species. Conservation requires everyone's involvement, and with committed champions, the future of this species can be secured. Together, we can build a sustainable future for our natural environment.
