Restobu, with the support of MuhiraConnect is hosting a 2-day training for former prisoners on 23–24 July 2026.
For years, Restobu has supported vulnerable prisoners through legal assistance, helping secure the release of hundreds of people. However, freedom is only the beginning. Many former prisoners leave prison carrying deep psychological wounds and face the difficult challenge of reintegrating into communities that are not always welcoming.
This training aims to support them on that journey by promoting healing, resilience, and successful reintegration into society. Similar trainings were organized for other former prisoners a few months ago, with encouraging results.

Wrongfully accused of stealing a phone, *John, a father of eight, was jailed for a crime he did not commit. Thanks to Restoration Burundi's legal intervention, the court acquitted him and he finally returned home.
But freedom came with a painful reality. To keep the family alive during his imprisonment, his wife had been forced to sell nearly everything they owned and even use their banana plantations as collateral for two years.

"See all these banana plantations. They are no longer mine. My wife gave them as collateral so our family could survive."

Despite all they lost, John says having his family together again is worth more than any possession. Together, he and his wife express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stood with them during this difficult journey.
Restoration Burundi continues to provide legal assistance, humanitarian support, and reintegration services to prisoners and former prisoners, helping restore hope to vulnerable families.

This is one of the testimonies shared by students who are members of the Peace Club at the Petit Séminaire Dutwe, in Ruyigi Province.

Restoration Burundi visited them to hear about the impact the Peace Club has had on their lives during the school year that has just ended.

Restoration Burundi remains committed to spreading the values of humanity, and peaceful coexistence in secondary schools across the country.

Recently, we had the opportunity to engage students at CND Secondary School in Gitega Province. The students shared that peace club lessons have helped them to live together without discrimination despite their differences, and promote mutual respect among one another.

Students with disabilities also expressed that they now feel respected, included, and treated equally alongside their peers. More importantly, they have come to recognize that they are great agents to promote peace and harmony in the society .

By nurturing these values in young people, we are helping build a more inclusive, compassionate, and united Burundi .

These are some of the members of peace club at ETS Kamenge high school. After the whole year of participating in peace club trainings , they testify about the positive impact of the Peace Club in their lives. During a discussion with Restoration burundi, these students shared that some of the key lessons they learned through the Peace Club include promoting peace within their communities by practicing non-violence and helping reconcile people involved in conflicts.

Today, these young peace
ambassadors are actively contributing to peacebuilding by helping reconcile fellow students and encouraging dialogue whenever disagreements arise.

Peace Clubs are groups established by Restoration Burundi in some high schools, where secondary school students learn important values like: patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and conflict resolution skills. These clubs empower young people to become responsible citizens, promote non-violence, and contribute to building peace within their schools and communities.

Restoration Burundi continues to support vulnerable communities on their path to self-reliance.

Following a training sessions of entrepreneurship and financial management , women from Maramvya development cell today received additional business capital to strengthen and grow their small businesses.

Many of these women are widows , others have been abandoned by their husbands, so this support will help them better provide for their families and improve their livelihoods.

Apart from supporting members who belong to savings and loan development cells in Kirundo Commune, Restoration Burundi also supports them in their collective farming initiative. This project is greatly helping the members to improve their livelihoods, since many of them previously had limited financial resources. Etienne , one of the development cells testifies:

''When we harvest and sell our crops, we feed our families, buy clothes for our wives and children, some buy goats or pigs for breeding, and other rent lands to cultivate. My wish is that Restoration Burundi continue to help us so that the cooperative may expend'' .

Restobu is running 14 development cells in Kirundo Commune due to the lack of formal banking service in that area . These development cells give to its members the opportunity of getting an easy access to loans. The members greatly appreciate this initiative because, in the past, they often had to borrow money from individuals who charged excessive interest rates. These cells are now helping members improve their livelihoods and achieve economic development. One of the members testifies:

“I borrowed 100,000 BIF from this association and bought a female piglet. After 1 year, it gave birth to 5. I sold them and bought 2 goats; they are about to kid. This group is so helpful. This is what I can testify, because I had no livestock of my own to breed as a woman, but, this has been made possible thanks to this group.”

In Kirundo Commune, many vulnerable families face a harsh reality. With no access to formal banking services, even small emergencies push them toward loan sharking; informal lending systems, where they become trapped in cycles of debt and exploitation.Beneficiaries of this region, bordering Rwanda,....
