On 17 October 2026, the world will celebrate the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage for the third time – a day dedicated to safeguarding and promoting living traditions, customs and cultural practices passed down from generation to generation.

The day was proclaimed in 2023 during the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference, with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of intangible cultural heritage in preserving cultural diversity and the identity of communities around the world.

Intangible cultural heritage encompasses a wealth of traditions and knowledge – folk songs and dances, rituals, celebrations, oral traditions, traditional crafts and skills. Unlike tangible cultural heritage, it continues to exist through the people who practise, preserve and pass it on to future generations.

Folklore holds a special place within this heritage, preserving the historical memory, values and unique cultural identity of peoples. Folklore festivals and cultural gatherings provide opportunities to present these traditions to a wider audience while encouraging exchange between different cultures.

The European Association of Folklore Festivals (EAFF), a UNESCO partner in the field of intangible cultural heritage, contributes to the promotion and preservation of folklore traditions through international festivals, championships and cultural initiatives. The Association’s activities create opportunities for performers from different countries to come together and showcase living cultural heritage to international audiences.

On the occasion of the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO invites organisations, institutions, communities and individuals to take part in the celebrations through initiatives dedicated to living cultural heritage.

Budapest Dances to the Rhythm of the World at Summer BudaFest 2027

From July 23 to 26, 2027, the Hungarian capital, Budapest, will become a stage for cultural diversity as it hosts the 7th International Dance and Music Festival “Summer BudaFest”. The event will bring together performers from different countries, showcasing their traditions through music, dance, and performing arts.

The festival is non-competitive and welcomes folklore ensembles, choirs, orchestras, majorette teams, and modern dance groups. Children, young people, and adults are invited to participate, with the main goal of promoting cultural exchange and building new friendships among participants.

The official festival evening will take place on July 24, when performers will present their programmes to an international audience. Each group is required to prepare at least three dances, each lasting 10 to 12 minutes. Participation is limited to three groups per country.

In addition to the stage performances, the organizers offer opportunities to explore Budapest – a city where the romantic streets of Buda meet the vibrant atmosphere of Pest. Optional activities include visits to Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle, and Heroes’ Square, excursions to the historic towns of Visegrád, Esztergom, and Szentendre, as well as an evening boat cruise along the Danube.

“Summer BudaFest” will give participants the opportunity not only to showcase the richness of their own culture but also to discover the traditions of other nations in one of Central Europe’s most beautiful cities.

Young Performers to Share Music and Traditions on the Shores of the Bosphorus

Istanbul will welcome young performers to the International 23 April Child Festival, taking place from 22 to 26 April 2027. Between Europe and Asia, participants will showcase their countries’ cultures and forge new friendships through music and dance.

Singing ensembles, majorette groups, choirs, and folk and modern dance groups are invited to participate. Dancers must be aged 8 or above, and performances may feature live or recorded music.

The preliminary programme includes performances on outdoor municipal stages and opportunities to share dance traditions. Groups will teach dances from their countries and learn traditional Turkish rhythms and movements — a chance to discover different cultures through direct interaction.

The festival experience will also include a visit to Istanbul’s historic district, while an optional boat trip along the Bosphorus will be available at an additional cost. The final programme will be announced at a later date.

Among the cypress trees and gently rolling hills of Tuscany, the 17th International Festival of Choirs and Orchestras will take place from 21 to 25 July 2027. The Italian region will offer ensembles an opportunity to present their repertoire while combining concert performances with an exploration of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Montecatini will host the musical gatherings, with the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta among the concert venues. Its atmosphere will lend a distinctive character to the performances, bringing choral and orchestral music into a setting of beautiful Italian architecture. Participating ensembles will present a programme of their own choice lasting between 30 and 45 minutes.

The provisional festival programme includes a parade and a joint concert featuring all ensembles, a meeting for conductors, rehearsals and concert performances. Attending other ensembles’ concerts will allow musicians to discover different repertoires and approaches to performance, while the time between rehearsals and concerts will provide opportunities for conversation and exchanging experiences.

Tuscany also offers fascinating places to explore during free time. Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca reveal different aspects of the region’s history and culture. For participants with an interest in opera, Lucca—the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini—holds particular appeal. Walks through Tuscan towns and opportunities to sample the local cuisine can complement the musical experience with a taste of everyday life in Italy.

The final programme and the number of concerts will depend on the number and type of participating choirs and orchestras. A four-day stay is also available.

Choirs and orchestras wishing to take part in the 17th International Festival in Tuscany can find the participation conditions and submit an application through the website of the European Association of Folklore Festivals – EAFF.
