Focus Groups and Interviews in Bulgaria: Understanding Real Needs in Career Guidance

Bulgarian Association for Transfer of Technology and Innovation - BATTI recently carried out focus groups and individual interviews with parents, teachers, and students to explore their views, challenges, and expectations regarding career planning and guidance.

The sessions went very smoothly and generated valuable insights. Participants were engaged, open, and willing to share personal experiences, which helped us better understand the realities families and young people face when thinking about future education and career choices.

The findings showed that while career planning is considered highly important, both students and parents often feel insufficiently prepared.

Parents highlighted how difficult it can be to support their children while also avoiding the risk of influencing them with their own personal ambitions or past experiences. Many also admitted that they lack reliable and current information about the labour market, new professions, and educational opportunities.

Students, especially those close to graduation, shared that although they are interested in planning their future, they often feel uncertain. Many struggle to connect their interests and strengths with real career paths and educational choices. They also expressed a strong preference for practical guidance through internships, career events, and direct contact with professionals.

Overall, the discussions confirmed a strong interest in career guidance and revealed a clear gap between existing support systems and the real needs of families.

These insights will help shape more effective, practical, and responsive career guidance activities in the future.
