ISSA - International Step by Step Association.

🚋 For three days, marvelos Lisbon hosted early childhood development practitioners, researchers, philanthropists, architects, government representatives (at both national and local levels), and youth leaders from six continents for the 2026 International Conference of the International Step by Step Association (ISSA).
🏘️ Rositsa Stanislavova Bogalinska, Executive Director of Rise Bulgaria, and Mara Lee Durrell, Executive Director of Rise Alliance for Children with the teams from Bulgaria and Ukraine, participated in panel discussions and plenary sessions that explored the achievements and challenges within early childhood development and early learning, the interplay between various systems, the ever-changing landscape, the unpredictability of the future, and the innovative solutions discovered by communities striving for a better life for their children.
🧩 Rositsa Petrova presented the model of Rise in Bulgaria - a partnership-based approach involving local organizations and *chitalishta* (community centers). This model establishes play and experiential learning groups close to families living in marginalized communities or in areas with limited access to early learning services. It draws upon the nearly two-century-old tradition of Bulgarian *chitalishta* - the vibrant heart of the community that resonates directly with its needs - and reimagines this legacy through modern support practices for children and families, ensuring a stable and secure start in life via Rise Bulgaria’s early learning programs.
🔃 The conference poses a complex, open-ended question: how can such effective, community-driven solutions be scaled into sustainable models at the national level - reaching those most in need, much like the *chitalishte* (community center) network does?
🌅 We wil continue looking for the right answers for each community, tailored to its specific characteristics and needs. It is precisely this blend of universality and flexibility, this synergy between the community and the *chitalishte*, that proves so valuable. It is part of the ongoing process we share with every child, as we seek the best path forward together. 🛤️
