🎓 XXVI Summer Seminar for Young Public Policy Professionals – Another Successful Edition

For a 26th consecutive year, the Summer Seminar brought together young public policy professionals from across Central and Eastern Europe to exchange ideas, strengthen regional connections, and jointly explore strategic visions for the future of the CEE region.

🌍 Throughout the week, participants engaged in expert-led discussions, the CEE Futures Forum, and Strategic Foresight exercises, addressing topics of key importance for Central and Eastern Europe, including regional security, EU enlargement, economic transformation, energy resilience, good governance, artificial intelligence and anticipatory policy-making.

💬 The seminar provided a unique platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange between emerging professionals and distinguished international and national experts, practitioners, and academics, fostering new perspectives, future-oriented thinking, and regional cooperation.

✨ The XXVI Summer Seminar received highly positive feedback from participants, who particularly appreciated the excellent organization, distinguished speakers, relevant topics, practical foresight exercises, valuable networking opportunities, and the inspiring atmosphere.

🤝 The successful implementation of the XXVI Summer Seminar further reinforced regional cooperation by creating opportunities for collaborative learning, knowledge exchange, skills development, and professional networking, while strengthening a growing community of young leaders committed to shaping the future of Central and Eastern Europe.

🔮 Strategic Foresight Sessions – One of the Highlights of the XXVI Summer Seminar

One of the most engaging and practice-oriented components of the XXVI Summer Seminar was the series of Strategic Foresight sessions, during which participants explored possible futures for Central and Eastern Europe through collaborative scenario-building exercises.

👥 Working in four multinational groups, participants identified key drivers of change, selected two critical megatrends, and developed alternative scenarios for the future development of the CEE region up to 2036.

🌍 This year’s foresight exercise focused on two highly relevant themes:
▪ Security dynamics in Central and Eastern Europe
▪ Future prospects for EU enlargement

💡 The interactive foresight exercise stimulated active discussions, encouraged teamwork, and fostered future-oriented thinking, challenging participants to reflect on the long-term development of Central and Eastern Europe.

🗣️ The final scenarios and strategic visions developed by the participants were presented and discussed during the CEE Futures Forum, providing a valuable platform for reflection, exchange of perspectives, and expert feedback.

👏 The EPI team would like to thank all SS2026 participants for their active engagement, enthusiasm, and excellent teamwork throughout the foresight sessions.

🌍 CEE Futures Forum 2026 | XXVI Summer Seminar for Young Public Policy Professionals

The CEE Futures Forum within the 26th Summer Seminar brought together distinguished experts from the region to discuss the key economic, political and energy challenges shaping the future of Central and Eastern Europe.

🎙️ The morning session featured valuable contributions from:
▪ Andrei Covatariu, Associate Lecturer at The Bucharest University of Economic Studies and Co-Chair of ‘Digitalisation in Energy’ Task Force of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, who presented the CEE’s Energy Landscape, providing valuable insights into the ongoing transformation of the region’s energy sector and the need to balance energy security, affordability, sustainability, and economic competitiveness.
▪ Branimir Jovanovic, Economist at the The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), who provided a comprehensive overview of the economic developments, challenges, and growth prospects in Central and Eastern Europe during his presentation “The CEE Economies between a Structural Transition and External Shocks.”

💬 The thought-provoking presentations stimulated lively discussions among participants and speakers, fostering a deeper understanding of the economic and energy challenges, opportunities, and transformations shaping the future of the CEE region.

📍 The 1st working day of the XXVI Summer Seminar was inspiring and thought-provoking, offering participants valuable insights into the future of Europe and Central and Eastern Europe in an increasingly complex global environment.

The morning session featured two distinguished experts who shared their perspectives on some of the most pressing challenges facing the CEE region:
✅ Ingrid Shikova, Full Professor of EU Policies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, delivered a lecture on “The EU in 2026 and Beyond: Balancing External Challenges and Internal Dynamics,” providing a comprehensive overview of the key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the future of the European Union and affecting the CEE region.
✅ Srđan Majstorović, Chairman of the Governing Board of the European Policy Centre, followed with an insightful speech on “EU Enlargement Perspectives Amidst Global Tension,” exploring the future of the enlargement process against the backdrop of growing geopolitical uncertainty.

🔮 In the afternoon, the focus shifted from analysing the present to exploring the future. The EPI team introduced participants to the Strategic Foresight Methodology, laying the foundations for the seminar’s interactive foresight exercise.

👥 Working in multinational teams, participants actively began identifying key drivers of change and developing future scenarios and strategic visions for Central and Eastern Europe in the current era of polycrisis.

✨ The first day set an excellent foundation for the intensive discussions, collaborative learning, and future-oriented thinking that will continue throughout the whole week in Albena.

📣 The XXVI Summer Seminar for Young Public Policy Professionals was officially opened yesterday!

🌍 The Economic Policy Institute was delighted to welcome young public policy professionals from 10 countries across Central and Eastern Europe to the 26th edition of its flagship regional initiative.

🎙️The opening session began with a warm welcome from the EPI team, followed by introductory remarks from EPI’s Executive Director, Yasen Georgiev, who presented the Summer Seminar initiative and its significant role as a platform for regional cooperation, policy dialogue, leadership development, and professional networking in Central and Eastern Europe.

We were honoured to receive welcoming addresses from:
✅ Klaus Fiesinger, Regional Director for Southeast Europe of the Hanns Seidel Foundation
✅ Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission’s Representation in Bulgaria
✅ Hristo Polendakov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria
✅ Franco Dal Mas, Secretary General of the Central European Initiative

🔍 Over the coming days, participants will engage in expert-led discussions, Strategic Foresight sessions, and collaborative exchanges exploring future scenarios for Central and Eastern Europe.

💡 We are looking forward to a productive, insightful, and inspiring week ahead in Albena.
