🌍 EPI is delighted by the outstanding interest in the XXVI Summer Seminar!

We have received a high number of excellent applications from young professionals across Central and Eastern Europe, which reflects the strong reputation and growing impact of our regional initiative.

💡 We are currently conducting the selection process with great attention.

📅 The final selection results will be announced on 5 May 2026.

🙏 We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest and motivation to apply for the Summer Seminar. We look forward to welcoming the next cohort of SS2026 participants at the beginning of June in Albena, Bulgaria.

📌TOPIC: Strategic Visions for Central and Eastern Europe in the Polycrisis Era
🗓️WHEN: June 8-12, 2026
📍WHERE: Flamingo Hotel Complex, Albena Resort, Bulgaria
👥PARTICIPANTS: Public servants, early or mid-career diplomats, policy-oriented researchers and think-tank professionals up to 35 years of age
✨HIGHLIGHTS: CEE Futures Forum, tailor-made scenario-building foresight sessions & a study trip to Varna.

🚀 Стартира кандидатстването за „Най-добър младежки стартъп в България 2026"!

👉 Тази година Институт за икономическа политика (EPI) се присъединява като партньор в инициативата на Fund of Funds in Bulgaria - FMFIB и Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" - петото издание на националния конкурс за младежко предприемачество, който е най-мащабната инициатива в подкрепа на млади предприемачи в България.

📅 Кандидатстването е до 24 април 2026 г.
👥 За младежи на възраст 18-29 г., включително студенти и ученици от 11 и 12 клас, или екипи с водещ младеж на тази възраст
💡 Допустими са идеи от всички сектори и на различен етап на развитие

Участниците получават:
✔ 3-месечна безплатна обучителна и менторска програма с участието и на международни експерти
✔ Достъп до мрежа от над 60 партньорски организации
✔ Възможност за директна инвестиция

Конкурсът ще подкрепи развитието на младежки идеи в три категории:
💡 Business Stars - малък и среден бизнес с потенциал за дългосрочен растеж в региона си или България
💡 Future Unicorns - технологични стартъпи с иновативни идеи и с потенциал за растеж на международни пазари
💡 SDG Dragons - проекти с устойчиво позитивно въздействие върху обществото, градовете и природата

🌍 In today’s era of growing uncertainty, strategic foresight has become essential for navigating complex and rapidly changing realities.

🔮 Concluding our journey through EPI’s latest publication, we now turn to the final chapter: “Foresight Sessions: Central and Eastern Europe – Navigating Uncertainty.” The conclusions from the foresight sessions provide forward-looking insights into how Central and Eastern Europe can better navigate uncertainty.

🔹 Key Messages from the Foresight Sessions:
✅ Uncertainty is not a temporary condition, but a defining feature of CEE’s future, requiring continuous anticipation rather than static planning.
✅ Strategic foresight and scenario-building strengthen policy resilience, enabling decision-makers to explore alternative futures and stress-test policy choices before crises emerge.
✅ Future peace, security, and competitiveness in CEE will depend on adaptability, regional cooperation, and the ability to manage overlapping geopolitical, economic, and societal risks.
✅ Participatory foresight enhances the quality of policymaking, bringing together diverse expertise and perspectives to inform more robust strategic decisions.

📌 Main takeaway:
Foresight is not about predicting the future - it is about preparing for multiple possible futures and equipping policymakers with the tools to navigate uncertainty with confidence and responsibility.

📘 This concluding chapter turns reflection into practical, forward-looking insights, reinforcing strategic foresight as a cornerstone of effective governance in Central and Eastern Europe.

📘 We are excited to share the official volume of the XXV Anniversary Summer Seminar for Young Public Policy Professionals - “Strategic Vision for Central and Eastern Europe in Times of Continuous Uncertainty.” This comprehensive edition brings together contributions from distinguished speakers and participants across the CEE region, as well as foresight scenarios created by participants from 13 countries.

👉 Find out the key messages from the first chapter “EU Enlargement Perspectives and Regional Connectivity” that includes the contributions of Bernd Christoph Ströhm, Sava Mitrović, and Nicolae Arnaut:
✅ EU enlargement is a strategic necessity for safeguarding stability, resilience, and long-term prosperity in the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Part 2 of our Program Director & Senior Analyst, Trifonova's busy agenda in Brussels last week.

She represented EPI at this year's European Research and Innovation Days , 16-17 September, that set the stage for the EU's R&I funding modalities and strategic priorities for the new programming period. The high level gathering of policy stakeholders, researchers and business professionals was opened by European Commission President von der Leyen and Commissioner Екатерина Захариева. It was nice to see Bulgaria's Dronamics taking center stage at the outdoors exhibition.

The two days of intensive debate, exchange of ideas and professional networking were structured along three silos:
👉 Choose Europe to start up and scale;
👉 Secure Europe's place at the forefront of scientific discovery;
👉 Making a reality of the EU's "fifth freedom" - research, innovation and knowledge.

EPI's presence at the event was motivated by our participation in the project MOBICCON-PRO as well as various research consortia across Europe.

Last week, EPI's Mariana Trifonova, had a busy schedule in Brussels.
Part 1 of her trip was attending the annual Fall Meeting of the European Think-tank Network on China (ETNC), kindly hosted by EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations and Victor De Decker. The preparation stage for the next ETNC report (due in June 2026) was set in motion under the guidance of Claudia Wessling and Bernhard Bartsch from Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS).

In celebration of ETNC's 10th anniversary, the Network also organized a conference entitled "Quest for strategic autonomy – How should Europe grapple with the US-China rivalry?". The event aimed to engage in a dialogue relevant European stakeholders and to present the key findings from the 2025 ETNC report on the same topic, led by Miguel Otero-Iglesias, Mario Esteban, Cristina de Esperanza Picardo from Elcano Royal Institute. The initial deliberations on this report were hosted by EPI in Sofia at the fall of 2024.
