💬 Partner testimonial | HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht)

How can digital sustainability become part of everyday professional practice?

At HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, lecturers from several practice-oriented Associate Degree programmes explored exactly that by completing the online Digital Sustainability Foundations 1 course and assessing how it could fit different programmes and professional roles.

The pilot showed strong potential for embedding digital sustainability into Associate Degree education, while also providing practical insights into how the course can be made more accessible and relevant for different learners. A Dutch translation has already been developed, supporting wider use within the institute.

The next step? A newly formed project group will explore how the course could evolve into a multidisciplinary, hybrid learning experience, combining self-paced learning with interactive formats such as a serious game.

Thank you to Dr. Irene Jonkers, Associate Professor Digital & Sustainable Transformation at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, for sharing her perspective and helping bring Digital4Sustainability learning closer to formal education in the Netherlands. 💚

From Strategy to action: meet the SMARCO Blueprint 🧩

Following the release of the SMARCO Strategy for Smart Communities Skills Development in Europe, it’s time to take the next step.

The SMARCO Blueprint brings together the Strategy’s key findings, priorities and recommendations in an accessible format, highlighting the main areas where action is needed to strengthen the Smart Communities skills ecosystem across Europe.

But the Blueprint is not meant to simply sit on a shelf. It is designed to start conversations.

Over the coming months, the Blueprint will be used as a starting point for discussion in nine national roundtables and one European roundtable, bringing together decision-makers and stakeholders to discuss its priorities and recommendations, explore how they translate into different national contexts, and share feedback that will help further refine the Strategy.

Following the successful pilot roundtable held in Stavanger in May, the conversation will continue in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Romania and Spain, before coming together at European level.

And the conversation starts here too. In the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at some of the Blueprint’s key findings and recommendations – ahead of the upcoming SMARCO roundtables, where the Blueprint will provide the basis for discussion.

✨ SMARCO Pilots – Round 2 is now open!

Following our first piloting round earlier this year, a second round of the SMARCO pilots is now open for registration.

The pilots bring the SMARCO learning programme into practice across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Spain. Alongside the national pilots, a multinational piloting programme brings together participants from different countries, creating an opportunity for cross-border learning, exchange and collaboration.

The programme focuses on the skills needed for two emerging professional profiles:
🔹 Smart Community Resilience Engineers – with skills spanning Digital Transformation, IoT, Cybersecurity, Urban Data Analytics, AI, and Green Transition & Sustainability.
🔹 Smart Community Resilient-solutions Procurers/Planners – covering Smart City Features, E-Services, working with communities, Green Transition & Sustainability, Innovative Infrastructure Design, and Project Management.

By taking part, participants will have the opportunity to engage with the learning resources developed through SMARCO and provide valuable feedback that will help us further refine them.

📅 Registration is open until 15 October 2026.
