In Burundi, the new school year started later than in Russia — on September 16. And our school, Heha, opened its doors to children for the third time.

It seems like nothing unusual: uniforms, a first-day assembly, lessons, teachers, plans for the new school year.
But if you know the stories of these children, you realize this is not an ordinary morning at all.

Just two years ago, many of them spent their days at a garbage dump. They searched for things they could sell, trade, or use to survive another day.

Today, they come to school.
Some already speak several languages. Some confidently solve math problems. Another is learning to make friends, to dream, and simply to be a child.

They are the same children. But the most important thing has changed. They now have the opportunity to learn and to build their lives differently.

At the first assembly, the school manager, Sylvestre, wished the children and teachers to give their all so that Heha would become an example for other schools.

That wish is very close to our hearts.
Because school is not only lessons and grades. Sometimes school becomes the place where a child first has a future.
And we want there to be more stories like this in Burundi.

Five years ago, children from the largest Kenyan slums crossed the threshold of Favor School. This is our first project in Africa.
Here they received what they had never had in their lives before: two hot meals a day, medical check-ups, a beautiful uniform. And a chance to choose their own future.

Currently, the school has 109 children. They were selected based on total poverty. The average academic performance of the students has reached 83%. Their motivation is enormous, without exaggeration. Children come to school even during holidays.

Over five years, we have opened a computer class and a football academy here. Such a school for the slums is true luxury.
28 of our students have confirmed A1 level in Russian.

All of this is the common work of everyone: teachers, us, the children themselves, and our helpers — the children’s trustees.

Thanks to you, a whole world beyond the slums is open to the children.

Look at how they stand. As if they’ve grown a few centimeters taller.
These are five students at Kilingi Primary School in Tanzania. We gave the kids new school uniforms. For now, we’re helping here in a targeted way — with what we can do today.
In Tanzania, a school uniform is much more than just clothing. It says: I am a student, I go to school, I have the opportunity to learn.
For a child, it means belonging to something big and important. And a reason for real pride.
Put on the uniform — your shoulders straighten, your smile grows wider. It seems you even want to run to school a little faster 🙂 Five sets of uniforms. Five very proud students. And five small steps toward a completely different life.

In the Kili center, we celebrated four birthdays at once. Each birthday child got their own cake. For these kids, it was a real event.

One of the birthday girls, Violet, has a mother who is seriously ill with tuberculosis and can hardly work. There is no father. To survive, the girl spent her days scavenging plastic and coal at the dump to sell. Due to constant malnutrition, she was exhausted and often sick. At our center, she gets proper meals and was able to go back to school. She never could have imagined that one day she would have her own big birthday cake.

It’s from moments like these that we piece together the childhood of slum children. We help them understand that there is another kind of life—one where you don’t have to fight to survive, but simply can and are allowed to live.

The open-air school in Burundi has been running for nearly three months now. The children happily attend lessons and study with great enthusiasm. In this region, even receiving a primary education represents a major breakthrough and a real chance for a better life.

When we talk about helping children in Africa, we must look beyond the statistics and see the individual child. Every child deserves what we often take for granted: daily meals, access to school, healthcare, a safe home, and the freedom to choose their own future.

In Uganda, nearly half of all children—44%—live in extreme poverty. This means they face a simultaneous lack of food, clothing, medical care, education, clean water, and decent shelter.

The hardest hit are children from the poorest households and those living in rural areas. For many families, the cost of school uniforms, supplies, and meals is simply too high, forcing children to drop out of school.

But education is more than just academics. In these communities, it is a lifeline—the only real way to break the cycle of poverty.

That is why our mission in Uganda goes beyond traditional humanitarian aid. We are working to create an environment where children can learn, receive the support they need, develop their talents, and grow up in safety. We have already taken action by opening a "School under the Sky" and a Child Rescue Center.

In the lives of the Rescue Center in Burundi, many things are happening for the first time. Regular meals – three times a day. Not something found at the dump, but freshly cooked by a chef. Care and attention. Recently, new mattresses arrived – real ones, soft and comfortable.

There was also the first excursion around the area. Manager Gerard shared interesting facts about places that are right near the children’s homes, but which previously seemed like another planet. The children have already started to go beyond the usual. They are developing an understanding that the world is much bigger than the landfill – and that they can and must break out of it.

Big help starts small. One such example is the story of an 11-year-old girl from the city of Hawassa, Ethiopia. After her father passed away, her family fell into a difficult financial situation, and she was unable to attend school. She had to help her mother survive.

Through our partners in Ethiopia, we delivered aid to the family: essential items and food supplies. The child will now be able to return to school. She no longer has to worry about where her next meal will come from. While the family is provided with the basics, her mother will have the opportunity to find work.

We’ve officially opened the Children’s Rescue Center in Burundi. Here, kids facing extremely hard life circumstances get hot meals and a chance to rest from the horrors of street life. They are cared for and given warmth and love 🙏🏻 The next step is to set up sleeping quarters — so that the children are always fed, well-rested, and strong enough to leave their current lives behind and step into a better adult future.
