We received this wonderful update from her adopters in Buxtehde, Germany yesterday (she is now named Neige, FYI):

"Training & Wheelchair Setup

The configuration: The photos show how the wheelchair needs to be adjusted for Neige to move around optimally. I'm also including pictures of the wheelchair without the dog, in case you'd like to replicate the setup.

The video: Here you can see Neige back in her wheelchair after a long break. We had to take the break because we were ill and couldn't train with her. She's made surprising progress despite the break.

Even though we couldn't actively train her, Neige has shown great initiative:

Muscle building: She has continued to build muscle and is increasingly moving around the house without her wheelchair.

Strength: She can even lift her bottom on her own sometimes now.

Active movement: It's especially encouraging that she's starting to move both hind legs independently (a little more on the right than the left). We're encouraging this further to improve her mobility around the house.

Success with bladder management

We have some very positive news here as well:

We are now stimulating her until she urinates on her own.

When we check her bladder afterward (express it), it is almost always completely empty. This shows that the stimulation is working exceptionally well.

We are very pleased with this progress and will continue to monitor it!"

We will keep updating you in this beautiful strong girl's progress.

From Terry: this is a difficult post to write.

Before opening our large yard shelter 5+ years ago, I was a weekend volunteer at the govt shelter in Sofia, Bulgaria where 1500 dogs are housed in terrible conditions.

When I started there, I began walking a dog who I could tell from his ear tag number had been there since he was very young, living alone in a small cage (see picture).

I guess he had been in that small cage for 9-10 years.

I walked him every weekend for 2 years, the kindest, calmest dog you could ever hope to meet.

His name? Ducky.

As soon as we could take in dogs into our new shelter, I brought Ducky in where he lived in our large roaming yard for senior dogs.

He loved it: the freedom, the attention and the better quality of life.

In one dog, Ducky represented so much of what our foundation is fighting for: better lives for shelter dogs who did nothing wrong but circumstances put them into a terrible environment for all their lives, a prison basically.

In June 2024, a rich elderly woman in Switzerland adopted Ducky and he then lived on a large estate there, enjoying big daily walks (we saw the regular videos).

He loved his life as a retired, Swiss gentleman.

Yesterday morning, while travelling to Vietnam to talk on stage about our dog work at a business event, I got the devastating news that Ducky had passed way.

The news hit me hard.

My deepest regret is that I didn't make the time to visit him one last time in Switzerland before his death.

Though we deal with many dogs, Ducky was with me for so much of the rescue dog journey that he will always be with me.

Always.

Sweet dreams old man Ducky and if there is an other side, I truly hope to see you there one day ###x.

Recently we took in Nadezhda (A Bulgarian word meaning Hope), a young pregant dog shot with a shotgun near Veliko Tarnovo.

All of her puppies died as a result and she will paralyzed in the back legs for the rest of her life.

She is a very sweet and affectionate girl and we built a temporary wheelchair for her to exercise with, as you can see in the videos.

She had never been in a wheelchair before and loved the freedom it gave her.

What you will also see there is the loving devotion of our Every Dog Matters EU staff to all our rescue dogs, especially Nadezhda in this case.

Nadezhda has a home in Germany and will soon fly there to have a good family life for however long she will live as she has very serious bladder and kidney issues that can be fatal, as a result of the shotgun attack.

If you haven't seen how unique the Every Dog Matters EU shelter is in person, we would love to see you here or you can see our videos on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com//videos

Our shelter is meant as a living protoype for how all dog shelters could be in the future, namely:

- large yards not overcrowded with dogs (space is vital for the emotional wellbeing of dogs, just like humans, tiny prison cell shelters across the world take away everything a dog needs to feel well)
- high quality food (60 euros a bag if bought in a shop)
- on site vet clinic with the same level of medical care as properly cared for pet dogs including expensive orthopedic operations if needed, and,
- lots of love from staff, volunteers and visitors

You can see 100+ reviews from actual adopters and visitors to our site over the last 5 years here: https://everydogmatters.org/reviews/

Though hugely challenging and difficult, the whole Every Dog Matters EU shelter team is very proud of the quality of life we provide every day for our 130 shelter dogs and you or your company can help us continue our unique mission by:

- sponsoring a whole big yard at our shelter: https://everydogmatters.org/sponsor-a-yard/
- monthly sponsoring one (or more!) of our beautiful dogs: https://everydogmatters.org/virtual-adoptions/
- donating materials that we need: https://everydogmatters.org/wishlist/
- just re posting or sh aring our posts so that someone in your network might consider adopting one of our furballs
- making a small monthly contribution of 2.5 or 5 euros via SMS message in Bulgaria: SMS with text, DMS EVERY DOG to number 17 777 (not available outside Bulgaria yet, sorry)
- organising a company teambuilding day at our shelter for building work, walking dogs, grooming dogs etc, as companies like Coca-Cola, Yettel and SAP do every year: https://everydogmatters.org/volunteering/
- staying up to date on our progress with our monthly newsletter here: https://everydogmatters.org/updates/

With your help, we can continue to help tragic cases like Nadezhda as we try to build the world's best dog shelter - from a dog's perspective!

Thank you in advance, friends.

Dear friends, after 5 and a half years of shelter life, many of our dog kennels need to be replaced.

The style in the picture (featuring 1 year-old supermodel Lila!) above is good and we generally need XL and L size for medium to large dogs.

Praktis sells these, currently the XL are selling for around 118 euros and L for around 98 euros – but you may know a cheaper supplier.

Hopefully you do!

Even a single kennel donated helps one of our wonderful dogs and any help in this regard or with other materials we use and need would be hugely appreciated:

I was a stray dog living on the dangerous streets of Оpitsvet village in Bulgaria with another homeless dog, my friend.

A woman from the village there wanted to catch me for castration, then return me to the street.

But while I was away, my dog buddy in Оpitsvet was poisoned and killed.

Luckily, I was taken in by Every Dog Matters EU where I am safe, well and loved and I even live in a huge yard (600 m2+) with just 1 other dog, Johnny.

But I am still looking for my forever family.

I am silky golden brown in color, about 2 years and 9 months old and weigh 18 kg.

Please SH ARE my post with your social network and I might find my perfect home among your online friends.
