River was born unexpectedly just over 10 weeks early in Sri Lanka due to her Mummy experiencing an abruption of the placenta. River weighed 3.5 pounds and was in NICU for the next month due to complex health complications including developing epilepsy and experiencing a brain bleed grade 4. At two months old and weighing 5 pounds and defying the odds, River flew home to England.
Within two weeks of coming home, River developed hydrocephalus and needed a lifelong shunt inserted into her head to save her life. In the last 2 years she has had a number of hospital admissions, due to unexplained episodes where she stopped breathing, needing an emergency shunt revision due to it getting blocked and pneumonia to name but a few reasons for her visits.
River lights up the lives of all those around her and for anyone that meets her, as she radiates love. River is growing stronger physically day by day, but due to her complex health needs and developing cerebral palsy she does regress at times, but always bounces back.
River has Quadriplegic bilateral cerebral palsy meaning all her limbs are affected. River is able to roll over and sit up for some time but loses her balance and is unable to catch herself so has to work so hard everyday to build strength to sit, crawl, stand and walk. River is talking and communicating, In fact she has recently been described as the politest, bossiest little lady. As River gets older she becomes more frustrated with not being able to do simple tasks herself. She shouts ‘I can do it Mummy’ & ‘I did it’ celebrating if she can. River has weekly physio to help her gain mobility and strength, at home she will do a minimum of an hour a day physio and in the past year River and her mum ‘Sam’ have made 4 trips to Canada for intensive therapy and 1 trip to Lanzarote for swimming therapy. These trips are massively beneficial but do come at an enormous expense costing no less than £8,000.00 a trip. River is responding so well to all of this and it’s such hard work but she puts everything into her development and her gaining more independence, so now is the time She needs this the most. Thank you so much for helping River on her journey! ✨
