World Pride Day | Celebrating Inclusion, Backed by Action

At ESCRH, inclusion is more than a value—it’s a commitment.

ESCRH took an institutional position.

On World Pride Day, we proudly reaffirm our support for diversity, equity, and belonging. We believe that every individual deserves to be respected, valued, and empowered to thrive as their authentic self.

By taking a clear institutional position, ESCRH stands with LGBTQ+ communities and allies around the world, helping create workplaces and societies where everyone can belong.

This World Pride Day, we celebrate courage, visibility, and progress—together.

World Pride Month: Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for All

As we celebrate World Pride Month, we recognize the importance of ensuring that Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are accessible, inclusive, and equitable for everyone. Pride is a time to celebrate diversity, reflect on progress, and reaffirm our commitment to the dignity, health, and rights of all people, including LGBTQIA+ communities.

ESCRH has published a position paper on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, explicitly including LGBTQIA+ people.

During the next weeks, this page will be updated regularly with new information, resources, and insights. We encourage you to check back for future updates and to stay informed about ESCRH’s ongoing work to promote inclusive and rights-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health.

💊 Choosing Contraception Based on Lifestyle
An evidence-based, patient-centered approach 👇

Selecting the most appropriate contraceptive method (MAC) requires integrating clinical eligibility with individual lifestyle, preferences, and reproductive goals.

📍 Key factors to consider:

🕒 Adherence & routine
• Difficulty with daily pills → consider LARC (implant, IUD)
• Irregular schedules → avoid user-dependent methods

💑 Sexual patterns
• Infrequent in*******se → on-demand methods may be appropriate
• Need for STI protection → recommend dual protection (condoms + effective contraception)

🧠 Patient preferences & perceptions
• Attitudes toward hormones
• Desire for menstrual control or amenorrhea
• Concerns about side effects

🩺 Medical eligibility
• Follow World Health Organization Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC)
• Consider contraindications to estrogen (e.g., migraine with aura, VTE risk)

📊 Effectiveness vs typical use
• LARC methods (IUD, implant) offer the highest efficacy independent of user adherence
• Short-acting methods require consistent and correct use

📍 European guidance (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare / European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health):
• Promote shared decision-making
• Prioritize patient autonomy and informed choice
• Offer LARC as first-line options while respecting individual preference

🔍 There is no “one-size-fits-all” method—tailoring contraception to lifestyle improves satisfaction, continuation, and clinical outcomes.

⏱️ How does it work? Copper IUD as Emergency Contraception

An evidence-based option for emergency contraception 👇

The copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) is the most effective form of emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days after unprotected in*******se.

🧪 Mechanism of action:
• Copper ions create a s***micidal intrauterine environment
• Impairs s***m motility, viability, and function
• Prevents fertilization before it occurs

📌 Additional considerations:
• May also prevent implantation, although the primary mechanism is pre-fertilization
• Provides ongoing, long-term contraception after insertion

📊 Clinical advantages:
• Highest efficacy among emergency contraception methods (>99%)
• Not user-dependent after insertion
• Effective regardless of BMI or timing of ovulation

📍 According to World Health Organization and Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, the Cu-IUD should be considered first-line for emergency contraception when available and acceptable to the patient.
