The History of Diplomacy and the Ancient Greek, Italian, Roman and French Diplomatic Traditions

The paper of dr. Tethloach Domach Ruey analyzes the history of diplomacy and the ancient Greek, Italian, Roman and French diplomatic traditions, and argues that modern diplomacy evolved out of the ancient traditions. The object of this essay is to inform practitioners and students of diplomacy about the development of diplomacy because the conduct of diplomacy is best understood when studied in the light of its historical roots.

Our cofounder Dieter Brockmeyer was honored to host the Industry Park panel discussion during Sub-Forum 4 of this year’s Sino-European Corporate ESG Best Practice Conference, , held at the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz on June 26. Climate change is a global problem that only can be solved globally. It was very promising to learn that there is already some collaboration between China and Europe, particularilly Germany, both technology leaders in this sector.

Thanks to the excellent expert panelists Antje Vargas (CEO GeoClimaDesign AG), Huang Feng (chairman Shanghai Foreign Investment Association), Dr. Thomas Schulte (VP & head of Sustainability & EHS, Bosch Group), Jia Chao (President of LONGi Solar Solar’s Europe Business Center) and Michael Marcinek (member of the board/development, GARBE Industrial Real Estate GmbH).

Another big thank you from our side to Jiyang Li of China International Investment Promotion Agency (Germany) GmbH for the invitation and the Chinese Consulate General in Frankfurt for the big success of the Sino-European Corporate ESG Best Practice Conference held for the third time this year..

Dear Excellencies, Dear Partners, Dear Readers, Summer invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the possibilities that emerge even in times of profound transformation. Around the world, nations continue to navigate geopolitical tensions, economic transitions, environmental challenges, and shifting global dynamics. Yet, as the pages of this edition vividly demonstrate, these challenges are accompanied by countless examples of resilience, leadership, and cooperation.
The voices gathered in this Summer Edition reveal a world in transition—but also a world rich in possibility. Across Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe and beyond, we see countries embracing change with determination and vision. We meet leaders who place people at the centre of development, who view sustainability not as an obligation but as an opportunity, and who understand that diplomacy, culture and economic cooperation are indispensable instruments for building a more resilient and inclusive future. Despite the complexities of our time, these pages offer compelling evidence that progress is achieved when nations choose engagement over fragmentation and shared ambition over narrow interests.
We are equally reminded that diplomacy extends far beyond political negotiations. It is present in cultural exchanges that build understanding, in economic initiatives that create opportunities, in environmental commitments that protect our common future, and in the countless human connections that inspire trust and solidarity. The stories in this edition illustrate that true leadership lies not only in addressing immediate challenges but also in creating long-term visions that empower people and communities.
At Diplomatic World, we have always believed that bringing together diverse perspectives contributes to a more informed and inclusive international community. In celebrating our twenty-fifth anniversary this year, we remain deeply committed to building bridges between peoples and nations.
As we embrace this summer season, let us draw inspiration from the determination, creativity, and optimism reflected in these pages.
I wish you an enriching and inspiring read.
