Speakers: Şebnem Yücel (Middle East Technical University) and Harriet Harriss (Pratt Institute)

Dr. Harriss - a Professor at Pratt Institute, a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture Johannesburg, South Africa and a qualified Death Doula - has established an international reputation for pioneering scholarship that draws upon feminist, post-humanist, and anti-colonial theories in efforts to advance pedagogies, policies, and professional practice. Dr. Harriss' is also an award winning writer, whose recent titles include Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South, Architects Afterlife: the multi-sector Impact of an Architecture Degree and 100 Women Architects in Practice - the latter of which was voted one of the Top 10 Architecture and Design Books of 2024. Her practice work is explored within residencies including Arctic Circle (2024), Institute of Public Architecture (2024), Taconic Fellowship (2025-26) and Kingsland Wildflower Residency (2026) and focuses on death, dying, ecological grief, and architectural afterlives; topics that form the the subject of her next book, An Incomplete Atlas of Death & Dying Architectures (2027).

Training the Trainers WORKSHOP 3 online (free) - Friday 24.04.2026
Topic: Feedback and the Studio Model
Speakers: Şebnem Yücell (MEF University), Harriet Harriss (Pratt Institute)

Şebnem Yücel’s research focuses on current topics with a critical historical agenda. She questions the representation of places and buildings, and concentrates on modernization in non-western contexts. Her teaching in architectural history and theory anchors around the reconfiguration of keywords like modern, metropole and region and aims to highlight dynamic cultural and disciplinary conditions within increasingly global practices that are embedded in localities. Yücel received her B.Arch (1993) from Middle East Technical University, Turkey, MSc. Arch (1998) from University of Cincinnati, and Ph.D. (2003) from Arizona State University with a concentration on History, Theory and Criticism. She is currently teaching at MEF University’s Architecture Department in Istanbul and serving as the dean of its Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture.

Peggy Winkels is a practicing architect and lecturer at Hasselt University, devoted to empathic design, intercultural collaboration, and regenerative architecture.
'I coordinate academic programmes such as the Global Perspectives master’s studio and the Building Beyond Borders postgraduate certificate, creating spaces for shared learning across borders. In practice, I seek to enrich everyday life through freehand sketching, urban storytelling, and socially engaged design. I have collaborated with various architectural firms and am currently part of the AIDarchitecten team.'
