Rory's dad was an explorer. Well, not literally. Literally, he was a geography teacher. But inside, she knows, he was Bear Grylls. And when he dies suddenly in an accident, Rory knows she needs to make one last expedition.

With a plastic compass and Dad's ashes at her side, Rory sets off in the footsteps of all the dead beardy explorers before her, to get Dad to the North Pole. Before Mum finds out they've gone.

Tatty Hennessy's play A Hundred Words for Snow is about being an explorer in a melting world. It's a coming-of-age story. With polar bears.

The play won the Heretic Voices Monologue Competition and was first produced at the Arcola Theatre, London, in 2018. A new production was performed at the 2018 VAULT Festival, where it was the winner of a VAULT Origins Award for outstanding new work from the VAULT Festival. It then toured the UK, with a run at the Trafalgar Studios in London's West End in 2019.

ALADDIN BOX OFFICE IS OPEN!

OCTOBER PLAY READING REMINDER
The ECC runs a play reading group on the first Wednesday of every month. The group is open to anyone interested in enjoying a range of English language plays, regardless of acting ability or native tongue. Plays read range from ancient to modern and from the serious to the absurd.

The Life of Sulla (Act I)
Fintan writes: This is Act I of my new play The Life of Sulla. It's based on Plutarch's life of Sulla and it's about the career of the bloody dictator whose march on Rome (twice) signalled the coming end of the Republic. The play is in verse and the first act shows the meeting of Sulla with his great rival, the 'third father of Rome', general Gaius Marius, on the occasion when Sulla, fleeing a riot outside, took refuge in his enemy's house. The outcome of their encounter had implications for the great Mithridatic war, and the future of the Roman constitution.

But don't worry! The first act is supposed to be quite funny, by contrast with Sulla's appalling campaign of terror after his second March on Rome.

The Virtuous Burglar
This is a A Feydeau-style farce in which a burglar who is in the act of burgling the house is interrupted by the arrival of a couple – who are in fact having an affair. The farcical complications that ensue also involve the arrival of the burglar's wife. In the end, as they are all arguing among themselves, yet another burglar arrives to burgle the flat.

Audition notice!

Auditions will take place on 15 and 18 October for the ECC’s April 2027 production of Cold Comfort Farm.

Come and get lost in the wildly funny, wonderfully odd world of Cold Comfort Farm. When orphaned Flora Poste descends on her doom-laden Sussex relatives, she finds a farmhouse full of gloom, grudges, and grotesques — and sets about fixing every single one of them, whether they like it or not. Paul Doust’s stage adaptation is a gift for actors: big, theatrical characters, wicked comic timing, and a satire so sharp it still cuts today. This is a chance to be part of something properly funny and properly stylish, with roles from major leads to crowd and chorus, calling for all ages, genders and experience levels.

PLAY READING REMINDER

September 2nd: Cold Comfort Farm

In September Antonia Mochan will be leading us in a play that she will be directing for the ECC in April 2027.

Antonia writes:

The April 2027 ECC production will be Cold Comfort Farm by Paul Doust, adapted from the novel by Stella Gibbons.

Cold Comfort Farm is a classic novel, that has far outlived the style of fiction is was parodying. The very proper Flora Poste, recently orphaned, comes to live with her Starkadder relatives on Cold Comfort Farm. For someone who likes things to be tidy and pleasant, there’s a lot of work to do, and the Starkadders don’t always seem amenable, but Flora will probably get her way in the end!

The play is set in the 1930s and has a wide variety of comic and dramatic roles for all ages, and all levels of involvement (from main roles to chorus and crowd). If you think you might be interested, come along to the playreading to see what you think, or if you can’t make it, contact the director Antonia on [email protected] for more information.

Please note: Antonia has two dogs who will probably not be there during the play reading, but anyone allergic to dogs should not come.

A Night in the Ukraine

July's play is the script of an original musical written by Sherry's father Dick Vosburgh. Don't worry, we won't be singing!

A Night in the Ukraine is the second act of the award-winning double feature A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine. The show is a rambunctious pastiche of Marx Brothers films, loosely based on Anton Chekhov’s play The Bear.

The narrative follows a wild, zany group of Marx Brothers-inspired characters attempting to resolve the financial woes of a wealthy Ukrainian widow. Vosburgh's script is famous for capturing the signature anarchy, rapid-fire puns, and visual comedy of the legendary comedy troupe.

The original 1980 Broadway production won two Tony Awards, including Best Featured Actor in a Musical (David Garrison) and Best Costume Design.

Dick Vosburgh was a Grammy and Tony-nominated comedy writer and lyricist and actor, who wrote musicals and comedy sketches and gags for many well known British radio and television programmes: The Frost Report, That Was The Week That Was, Do Not Adjust Your Set, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise and Who Do You Do? and several Frankie Howerd productions.
