ECC Brussels

ECC Brussels The English Comedy Club is an amateur society dedicated to performing English language theatre in Brussels.

It is the oldest established English language theatre group in mainland Europe. The English Comedy Club was formed in 1909 as an amateur society dedicated to performing English language theatre for the expatriate community in Brussels. It is the oldest established English language theatre company on mainland Europe. It has since been joined by several other companies including the American Theatre

Company (ATC), the Irish Theatre Group (ITG), the Brussels Shakespeare Society (BSS) and the Brussels Light Opera Company (BLOC), to provide a thriving English Language Theatre community in the Capital of Europe. The club is based in "The Warehouse", a complex of buildings in the Schaerbeek area of the city which it co-owns with the ATC and ITG. The buildings include rehearsal rooms, a set building workshop, store rooms containing our extensive collection of props, furniture, costumes and set building materials, and a small but well equipped Studio Theatre with a capacity of 60.

PLAY READING REMINDER

September 2nd: Cold Comfort Farm

In September Antonia Mochan will be leading us in a play that she will be directing for the ECC in April 2027.

Antonia writes:

The April 2027 ECC production will be Cold Comfort Farm by Paul Doust, adapted from the novel by Stella Gibbons.

Cold Comfort Farm is a classic novel, that has far outlived the style of fiction is was parodying. The very proper Flora Poste, recently orphaned, comes to live with her Starkadder relatives on Cold Comfort Farm. For someone who likes things to be tidy and pleasant, there’s a lot of work to do, and the Starkadders don’t always seem amenable, but Flora will probably get her way in the end!

The play is set in the 1930s and has a wide variety of comic and dramatic roles for all ages, and all levels of involvement (from main roles to chorus and crowd). If you think you might be interested, come along to the playreading to see what you think, or if you can’t make it, contact the director Antonia on [email protected] for more information.

Please note: Antonia has two dogs who will probably not be there during the play reading, but anyone allergic to dogs should not come.

As ever, please let me know you are coming by signing up on the Google Sheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12VQn-lecaJy5WqHKglMHjeHE9yc6FihO14kPUCTTuhc/edit?gid=896929965 =896929965

Or by emailing me at [email protected]. We warmly welcome new members to the group, and I am happy to provide further details of how to join us. Janet

REMINDER: AUGUST PLAY READING

5th August
Chez Muriel

A Graham Greene Double Bill

In August we will have a Graham Greene double bill. Two (very) short plays.

The first, Yes and No, is a conversation between a stage director and an actor who he is coaching on delivering his lines ... Yes and No ... correctly.

The second, For Whom The Bell Chimes, is a funny domestic whodunnit.

Both are surprisingly light and funny and, as you would expect, clever!

I will be there, but if anyone would like to have a go at leading an easy piece, then please let me know - these 2 plays would be very good debut pieces!

As always, please sign up to let us know you are coming. Seats are limited at Muriel's, so it's good to know in advance how many to expect.

As ever, please let me know you are coming by signing up on the Google Sheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12VQn-lecaJy5WqHKglMHjeHE9yc6FihO14kPUCTTuhc/edit?gid=896929965 =896929965

JULY PLAY READING

1 July 7.30pm
Chez Yorgos
Please contact Janet for details if you need them

A Night in the Ukraine
by Dick Vosburgh

July's play is the script of an original musical written by Sherry's father Dick Vosburgh. Don't worry, we won't be singing!

A Night in the Ukraine is the second act of the award-winning double feature A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine. The show is a rambunctious pastiche of Marx Brothers films, loosely based on Anton Chekhov’s play The Bear.

The narrative follows a wild, zany group of Marx Brothers-inspired characters attempting to resolve the financial woes of a wealthy Ukrainian widow. Vosburgh's script is famous for capturing the signature anarchy, rapid-fire puns, and visual comedy of the legendary comedy troupe.

The original 1980 Broadway production won two Tony Awards, including Best Featured Actor in a Musical (David Garrison) and Best Costume Design.

Dick Vosburgh was a Grammy and Tony-nominated comedy writer and lyricist and actor, who wrote musicals and comedy sketches and gags for many well known British radio and television programmes: The Frost Report, That Was The Week That Was, Do Not Adjust Your Set, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise and Who Do You Do? and several Frankie Howerd productions. You might want to read about his extensive career on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Vosburgh.

REMINDER: ALADDIN AUDITIONS

Auditions for the 2027 Brussels panto Aladdin are coming very soon!

Aladdin is one of the most popular panto stories, and as usual the ECC version will feature spectacular set pieces, show-stopping dance numbers and more terrible puns than should be allowed together in one place at the same time. So if you fancy joining Aladdin, Wishy Washy and their mum Widow Twankey, princess Zahara and her family, evil Abanazar, not one but two genies, two very familiar policemen and three cheeky monkeys on a magical journey from the laundry to the Cave of Wonders and beyond, sign up to audition below!

All the information you need to audition for a principal role is in the audition form. Only people who have submitted a form will be able to audition, so don’t delay.

See you at the audition!

PS: Chorus auditions will be held after the summer break - more information on those will come in September!

PPS: We’re also looking to expand our team of behind-the-scenes helpers, on everything from costumes to props and set design, so if you’re interested in that, please let the panto team know.

Chers Parents / Dear Parents
By Emmanuel et Armelle Patron

3 June, 8pm
Chez Janet & Tim

How would you react if your two closest relatives won the lottery – and shared not a centime with you? When the Gauthier parents have such a win, the family’s resentments and secrets are revealed with dramatic effect.

This is an unofficial English translation of a modern French classic - only written in 2021 and yet already a successful French stage play and (this year) a film.

The ECC runs a play reading group on the first Wednesday of every month. The group is open to anyone interested in enjoying a range of English language plays, regardless of acting ability or native tongue. Plays read range from ancient to modern and from the serious to the absurd. We warmly welcome new members to the group, and I am happy to provide further details of how to join us. Janet
