🚨 Some children are not failing because they cannot learn.
They are failing because the way they are expected to learn is failing them.
And we do not talk about this enough.
🌿 There are children who are bright, curious, sharp, funny, thoughtful and capable.
Children who can explain a topic in huge detail when they care about it, but freeze when the classroom feels hostile.
Children who understand far more than their written work shows.
Children who might have done brilliantly in exams if the path to those exams had not become unbearable.
Children who are labelled as “disengaged” when really they have learned that school is not a safe place to try.
They get:
🚪 Suspended
📄 Excluded
🪑 Isolated
⏰ Reduced
🔁 Moved
📋 Managed
📨 Referred
🗣️ Discussed
🖊️ Documented
And somewhere along the way, adults start speaking about them as if they are the problem.
But I do not believe many children wake up and decide to ruin their own education for fun.
I think a lot of children stop accessing learning when the environment around them stops working.
That might be:
🧠 Anxiety
💔 Grief
💷 Poverty
📚 Unmet learning needs
🔊 Sensory overload
🌩️ Trauma
👀 Bullying
😔 Shame
⚡ A nervous system stuck in survival
Or a school culture that rewards compliance more than curiosity.
It might be years of being told they are:
“Difficult.”
“Lazy.”
“Rude.”
“Defiant.”
“Behind.”
“Disruptive.”
“Dramatic.”
“Not academic.”
And then something interesting happens.
Take that same child out of the environment where they feel watched, judged or already written off.
Give them:
🐴 A pony to care for
📏 A stable door to measure
🌾 A field to investigate
📝 A report to write about something they actually noticed
🧩 A practical problem to solve
📖 A reason to read
🔢 A reason to count
💭 A reason to explain their thinking
Suddenly the child who “doesn’t engage” is asking questions.
Suddenly the child who “won’t write” is telling you exactly what needs to go in the sentence.
Suddenly the child who “can’t focus” has spent twenty minutes comparing bedding, checking water, planning a route, observing behaviour or explaining why a gate system does not work.
Funny that.
Maybe they were not incapable.
Maybe they were trying to learn in a place that had already decided what kind of learner they were.
🌿 This is why practical, relationship-based learning matters.
Not because horses magically fix attendance, exclusion or lost confidence.
They do not.
But the right environment can offer a child a way back into learning without forcing them through the same doorway that hurt them.
Some children need a desk.
Some children need movement first.
Some children need quiet.
Some children need purpose.
Some children need to feel useful before they can feel academic.
Some children need an adult to stop asking:
❌ “Why won’t they engage?”
And start asking:
✅ “What conditions help this child come alive?”
That question changes everything.
Because there are children sitting outside the system who are not lacking intelligence.
They are lacking access.
And when we change the access, we often find the learner was still there all along 🌿🐴
