WAPA – War-Affected People’s Association – fights against the use of children in armed conflict and supports their reintegration into a stronger community. How?

📍supports children who are victims of armed conflict: those associated with armed forces and
groups, victims of sexual violence, born of r**e or displaced.

📍DRC 🇨🇩 Colombia 🇨🇴 Myanmar 🇲🇲 In the South, WAPA works with local partners in post-conflict states or countries en route to peace. It finances their reintegration programs. We are active in Uganda (2013) and in Sri Lanka (2017), Colombia (2018) and Democratic Republic of Congo (2021). In the north, WAPA conducts awareness and advocacy campaigns about the issue of child soldiers in order to put an end to their recruitment (prevention, demobilisation, reintegration). WAPA has been officially recognized as an OSC by the Belgian government and by FPS Finance as an institution assisting developing countries. Donations over 40€/year are tax deductible (45 % on the total amount of your donations)! WAPA makes every effort to allocate your donations to the project of your choice. Pour les enfants touchés par la guerre, se sentir à nouveau en sécurité n’est qu’une première étape. 🧡

Retrouver confiance en soi, surmonter les traumatismes et reprendre sa place dans la société demande du temps. Et aucun enfant ne devrait avoir à faire ce chemin seul.

À l’occasion de la Journée mondiale de la santé mentale, nous rappelons l’importance d’un accompagnement adapté pour aider ces enfants à se reconstruire : un soutien psychologique, un suivi sur le long terme et un entourage bienveillant sur lequel ils peuvent compter.

Car au-delà de la survie, chaque enfant doit pouvoir se reconstruire, retrouver ses repères et envisager l’avenir avec confiance.

Elke 30 minuten wordt in DR Congo een kind slachtoffer van misbruik.

Op 6 oktober 1996 werd het ziekenhuis van Lemera in Zuid-Kivu aangevallen. Dr. Denis Mukwege stond er toen aan het hoofd. Vandaag kennen we hem als Nobelprijswinnaar voor de Vrede en als een van de belangrijkste stemmen in de strijd tegen seksueel geweld in conflictsituaties.

Dertig jaar later worden kinderen nog elke dag getroffen door de gevolgen van dit geweld.

In DR Congo staat WAPA aan de zijde van kinderen die getroffen zijn door gewapende conflicten. We ondersteunen onder meer slachtoffers van seksueel geweld en kinderen die geboren zijn uit verkrachting.

Lemera herdenken is meer dan terugkijken. Het herinnert ons eraan hoe dringend actie vandaag nog altijd nodig is.

Au Congo (RDC), un enfant est victime d’abus toutes les 30 minutes.

Le 6 octobre 1996, l’hôpital de Lemera, dans le Sud-Kivu, était attaqué. À sa tête se trouvait alors le Dr Denis Mukwege, prix Nobel de la paix et figure du combat contre les violences se*****es liées aux conflits.

Trente ans plus t**d, les enfants continuent de subir les conséquences de ces violences.

Au Congo (RDC), WAPA accompagne des enfants touchés par les conflits armés, notamment des victimes de violences se*****es et des enfants nés de viol.

Se souvenir de Lemera, c’est aussi rappeler l’urgence d’agir aujourd’hui.

Aujourd’hui, à l’occasion de la Journée internationale de la paix, rappelons que la paix ne commence pas seulement lorsque les a***s se taisent.

Pour les enfants touchés par les conflits armés, elle se construit aussi dans l’après : retrouver un environnement protecteur, surmonter les traumatismes vécus, retourner à l’école, se former, gagner en autonomie et pouvoir à nouveau envisager l’avenir.

C’est dans cette reconstruction que WAPA s’engage, aux côtés de ses partenaires locaux.

Avec une promesse : protéger chaque enfant des conséquences des conflits armés.

Op deze Internationale Dag van de Vrede staan we stil bij wat vrede écht betekent. Want wanneer de wapens zwijgen, zijn de gevolgen van een conflict niet zomaar verdwenen.

Voor kinderen begint dan vaak een lange weg: trauma’s verwerken, opnieuw een veilige plek vinden, weer naar school gaan, vaardigheden ontwikkelen, zelfstandiger worden en opnieuw vertrouwen krijgen in de toekomst.

Samen met lokale partners helpt WAPA kinderen om die toekomst stap voor stap weer op te bouwen.

Onze belofte? Elk kind beschermen tegen de gevolgen van gewapende conflicten.

They are 14 and 17 years old. After more than a year with an armed group, the two sisters have just been released.

Since the 2021 military coup, the conflict in Myanmar has intensified, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. In this context, children and adolescents continue to be recruited and used by armed groups.

On the Myanmar–Thailand border, WAPA supports its local partner PEF (People’s Empowerment Foundation) in providing care and support to former child soldiers.

Since May 2025, a safe house has been home to 15 young people. There, they find a safe environment and support tailored to their individual stories and needs, helping them rebuild their lives and prepare for the future.

For these two sisters, this new chapter means, among other things, returning to school and being able to look to the future again.

Because leaving an armed group is only the beginning. Rebuilding your life and building a future takes time and the right support.
