This non-profit action, an organization of Transmission Entertainment & Events, aims to raise financial resources to support recognized organizations committed to the well-being of children. Many years ago, instead of settling down, I decided to explore the wide world and earn a living as street artist. I was a free bird who sought out nature and stayed temporarily in vans and self-supporting comm
unes. From one spot to another, coming and going, without responsibilities, obligations, social pressure, but also without a safe haven. The years passed and a new love turned into a steady relationship. One thing led to another and with it a longing to get settled. A steady job was the logical next step and then came the desire to have children. Meanwhile slowly but surely the daily routine crept back into my life. Acquired freedoms had to make way for a full agenda with appointments, schedules, priorities, deadlines, etc ...
And then came the first lockdown, which wiped all of this off the table ... The familiar roof over my head suddenly obscured the view of the open starry sky and pushed me down. The four walls underneath also came closing in and held my soul in a tight grip. There was only one way out: grabbing my backpack, slamming the door behind me and going for a hike, back into the wide world. My shoesoles devoured mile after mile, taking me further and further. A new passion was born. A blurred wish flourished and took shape again: to undertake an age-old pilgrimage (see the announced event on the page). It is common knowledge that walking has a positive impact on both mental and physical health. Why not combining business with pleasure and walk for a good cause? Now all that remained was the choice of theme I would focus on. Although there are many social problems that cry for attention, much human suffering can be traced back to a common denominator, namely poverty. It does not matter whether the cause is simply bad luck or the result of wrong choices by the parents, usually the children are the biggest victims, while they are least to blame and are the least resilient. The lockdown as a result of the corona pandemic was the final blow for many families who were already having a hard time just surviving. Distressing situations became commonplace. The end is not in sight, on the contrary. Fortunately, there are already many organizations that want to give underprivileged children a new chance. A chance to take part, just like their classmates, in all kinds of activities such as schooltrips, sportcamps, trips,… and to give them the feeling of being a full member of society. If you know that an average of 1 in 5 children in Flanders comes from underprivileged families, it is easy to calculate how many friends of the apple of your eye are part of this. "Today's children will become tomorrow's society!" Let us lend a helping hand in their education, self-confidence, emotional and mental development. Let us be the push to give them the opportunity to pursue their personal happiness, because every child has that right! Let us invest in the future! The charities we support with Hiking 4 Children are:
• Kansarme kinderen - Regio Oostende: - Vzw De Katrol - Vzw Arcade
• TCC Tibetan Cultural Center ASBL (Belgium)
We will be raising support through partners, sponsors and supporters. The companies that support us financially receive publicity through an advertising frame on the page Friends of Gargamel (18,800 members), and / or are mentioned on the Hiking 4 Children page. In addition to regular sponsorships, we also welcome all personal donations to support these charities. You too are listed on our page. The road to Compostella (or a large part of it). As a starting point I chose Saint-Jean-Pied-De-Port (France) to cross the border to Spain via the Pyrenees and walk the remaining 780km. Departure is scheduled for March 20, 2021; the arrival in Compostella on April 15, 2021. These dates will be used if government measures are favourable at that time. If not, the walking tour will be rescheduled to April / May 2021 or September / October 2021 at the latest. The choice of departure date is very symbolic to me: to feel the end of winter fading away to see spring awaken during my journey and to make my path bloom ...
The choice for this period, with an average day temperature of barely 8° C and night temperature around freezing, sets the bar for this expedition very high. It promises to be a hefty adventure ...
A beautiful song that applies to me in this whole concept:
"A little less conversation, a little more action, please." Which for me means as much as: stop dreaming, wake up and do something! And as Elvis puts it so beautifully in his song: grab your coat and let's start walking ...
