Habitats Foundation

Habitats Foundation We're on a mission to protect & restore biodiversity. Together with local communities. And with you. We know that. That's exactly what we aim to deliver.

We're a non-profit network focused on protecting and restoring key biodiversity ecosystems with the help of local and indigenous communities. Biodiversity conservation & restoration is the number one strategy to mitigate climate change. What we need now is a mixture of bold action and long-term vision. Join us on our journey.

We need your help to save coral 🪸, urgently. Here’s what’s happening:

In Candidasa, East Bali, a large coastal infrastructure project is built along a 3km stretch of coastline. The goal is to fight erosion and restore beaches that locals and tourism depend on.

Part of that construction is happening directly over one of Bali’s most vital reef ecosystems: they are destroying corals that took decades to grow.

Together with our local partner .foundation, we are actively trying to rescue as much coral as possible. We save them by planting the destroyed coral on our nurseries again 💚

We know this works because we’ve done it before. But we need your support to plant those nurseries and save Candidasa coral. The time to act is now because our window to save them is closing fast. Let’s go!

With offices in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, it’s important to make sure we stay aligned around our long-term vision. So this week, the founders and board members of all Habitats chapters came to Belgium for a day full of exciting project updates and plans.

We’re proud of our achievements so far and are very excited about everything that’s coming next. Stay tuned for some big updates soon.

Our co-founder and Ocean Lead .be turned 40 this month so it was time for a party and gifts 🎉

As a surprise, we planted a coral superstar just for her. Her own little part of a future coral reef 🪸.

Every year, on her birthday, she’ll get new pictures of the reef, so she can witness how her own little spot in the ocean starts teeming with life.

Join us in wishing Lien a happy birthday 🥳 .

PS: You also want to give someone an original birthday gift? Feel free to reach out and we’ll make it happen.

We have been waiting a long time for this. 🫶🏼

For decades, the “High Seas” was basically the Wild West. This massive stretch of water belonged to everyone but had almost no protection. That just changed.

The High Seas Treaty is officially live. For those of us at Habitats and in the conservation world, this is the breakthrough we needed. We finally have the legal tools to protect two-thirds of the ocean.

This is a win for the coral we plant and the marine life we are fighting to bring back. It gives the Blue Heart of our planet a real fighting chance. 🌊💙

Take a look at this beauty, discovered by during one of our field trips to our project in Chinambí, Ecuador 😍.

Through rapid eDNA assessments 🧬, we’ve identified priority areas for conservation, mapped the remaining populations of Atelopus coynei and Atelopus lynchi and identified the presence of other species.

We’re now supporting community-based forest protection, creating an implementation plan to protect 4,300 hectares of crucial habitats for not only harlequin toads, but also brown-headed spider monkeys, spectacled bears, etc.

HOPE FOR HABITATS: A CASE FOR CORALS AND A NEW PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT 🪸🐠

Coral reefs have crossed the world’s first major climate tipping point. What we do next matters.

Warm-water corals are now beyond their thermal limit, with the 2023–2025 bleaching event hitting 84% of all reefs. Natural recovery is no longer guaranteed.
But some reefs remain remarkably resilient, especially in the Coral Triangle, where cooler, fast-moving waters still buffer extreme heat. Places like Bali are flagged by the Initiative as global priority hotspots for survival and future reef regeneration.

That is why we are now partnering with and .foundation.

In recent months, we have already supported 23 coral nurseries in their restoration sites: a rapid, concrete step that strengthens survival and fuels large-scale reef rebuilding.

This is what hopeful urgency looks like.
Act where resilience exists, and coral can still come back.

Thank you so much to the wonderful people of for supporting our work in Kenya 🌱

This money will be used to plant mangrove trees, massive carbon sinks and fish nurseries, in Malindi Ungwana Bay (Kenya).

Do you also want to support one of our projects in Kenya, Ecuador or Indonesia? Let’s talk!

Happy Birthday! 🥳 Two years ago today, Magnolia buenaventurensis from Ecuador was scientifically described 🌸 Since there are only 26 known trees in the wild, it needs our help to survive! Read more about what we do to protect this beautiful piece of nature on our website 🌱

Why fix the leak if you’re not going to turn off the tap? Conservation & restoration go hand-in-hand. 🌏

At habitatsfoundation, we understand that simply restoring lost biodiversity isn’t enough. We must also protect what remains. Restoration without conservation is like trying to save water by catching drips while ignoring the source of the leak.

🌱 Conservation : Protecting existing ecosystems from further harm.
🌿 Restoration : Healing damaged ecosystems and bringing them back to life.

We’re committed to boosting global biodiversity through both conservation and restoration. Join us in making a real difference.

Take action for rewilding this World Rewilding Day! We are making a tangible difference at the Narupa Reserve by creating a wildlife corridor that links three Amazonian biodiversity hotspots. This project protects over 57 threatened species and ensures the long-term health of this vital ecosystem.
