Heuglijk nieuws: Flamboyance, de recente cd uit de reeks Alamire Foundation Editions die de Alamire Foundation samen met Passacaille Records cureert, werd onlangs bekroond met de prestigieuze Diapason d’Or.

In deze opname verkent artistiek leidster Anna Danilevskaia met Sollazzo Ensemble muziek uit de 14de en 15de eeuw, van het vroege Italiaanse ‘Trecento’ tot het begin van het Bourgondische tijdperk. Voor de productie breidde het ensemble uit tot maar liefst twintig zangers en instrumentalisten – een evocatie van vorstelijke banketten en ceremoniële contexten.

In this recording, artistic director Anna Danilevskaia and Sollazzo Ensemble explore music from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, from the early Italian ‘Trecento’ to the dawn of the Burgundian era. For this production, the ensemble expanded to no fewer than twenty singers and instrumentalists – reminding of princely banquets and ceremonial occasions.

(NL) Begin juli verzamelden onderzoekers, musici en liefhebbers van oude muziek zich in Warschau voor de jaarlijkse 'Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference' (MedRen Warsaw 2026), een een vijfdaagse conferentie met lezingen over meer dan tachtig thema’s.

Ook een Leuvense delegatie trok naar de Poolse hoofdstad, onder wie collega’s David Burn, Antonio Chemotti, Henry Drummond, Paul-Newton Jackson, Brett Kostrzewski en Deanna Pellerano. Scott Metcalfe stelde dan weer zijn komende kritische editie van Binchois’ liedrepertoire voor, die tijdens zijn residentie in het Huis van de Polyfonie vorm kreeg.

Met het oog op de toekomst zetten we een volgende stap in onze ambitie om onderzoek naar oude muziek internationaal te versterken. We zijn dan ook bijzonder verheugd aan te kondigen dat de Alamire Foundation een van de organiserende partners is van MedRen 2027, dat volgend jaar in Leuven zal plaatsvinden.

Nog vóór MedRen verwelkomen we onderzoekers van over de hele wereld voor de conferentie 'The Alamire Manuscripts: Past, Present, and Future' (28 - 30 april 2027). Dit symposium brengt de recentste inzichten samen over het rijke corpus van Alamire-manuscripten en fragmenten, en verkent nieuwe pistes voor toekomstig onderzoek.

📍De sessies vinden plaats in het Huis van de Polyfonie (Abdij van Park, Leuven) en in KBR te Brussel.

(EN) At the beginning of July, researchers, musicians, and early music aficionados gathered in Warsaw for the annual 'Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference' (MedRen), a five-day congress featuring presentations on more than eighty topics.

A delegation from Leuven was also well represented, including our colleagues David Burn, Antonio Chemotti, Henry Drummond, Paul Newton-Jackson, Brett Kostrzewski, and Deanna Pellerano. Scott Metcalfe presented his forthcoming critical edition of Gilles Binchois' chanson repertory, a project developed during his research residency at the House of Polyphony.

Looking ahead, we are taking another important step in our ambition to strengthen international research on early music. We are therefore delighted to announce that the Alamire Foundation will be one of the organising partners of MedRen 2027, which will take place in Leuven next year.

Even before MedRen, we look forward to welcoming researchers from around the world to the conference 'The Alamire Manuscripts: Past, Present, and Future' (28–30 April 2027). This international symposium will bring together the latest research on the rich corpus of Alamire manuscripts and fragments while exploring new directions for future scholarship.

📍Sessions will be held at the House of Polyphony (Park Abbey, Leuven) and at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) in Brussels.

(NL) We hangen het graag aan de grote klok: de Alamire Foundation rondde onlangs een ambitieus tweejarig project af met de publicatie van zo goed als alle beiaardmanuscripten uit het ancién regime op de Integrated Database for Early Music (https://www.idemdatabase.org/).

Als laatste toevoeging werd een unieke collectie achttiende- en vroeg-negentiende-eeuwse beiaardmuziek afkomstig uit de Parochialkirche in Berlijn ontsloten: veertien handschriften met zo’n 600 pagina’s aan beiaardmuziek.

Dankzij Anna Kasprzycka, de huidige beiaardier van de Parochialkirche, konden de bronnen snel naar Leuven worden overgebracht voor digitalisatie door het Alamire Digital Lab.

Straks om 15 uur klinken op de beiaards van de Abdijkerk van Park én van de Parochialkirche de eerste prelude en fuga uit ms. 3928. Kan je er niet zijn? Geen nood, tot en met 22u speelt het stukje elk uur.

(EN) We are delighted to share the news with bells on: the Alamire Foundation has recently completed an ambitious two-year project, culminating in the publication of virtually all carillon manuscripts from the Ancien Régime on the website of the Integrated Database for Early Music (https://www.idemdatabase.org/).

As a final addition, a unique collection of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century carillon music from Berlin’s Parochialkirche has been made accessible: fourteen manuscripts comprising some 600 pages of music.

Thanks to Anna Kasprzycka, the current carillonist of the Parochialkirche, the sources were transported to Leuven for digitization by the Alamire Digital Lab.

Today at 15:00, the carillons of both Park Abbey Church and the Parochialkirche will ring out with the first prelude and fugue from ms. 3928. Can’t make it? No worries–you can catch it on the hour until 22:00.

Nieuws van onze beiaardier Luc Rombouts! Als je straks rond de Abdij van Park in Heverlee wandelt, ben je getuige van een wereldpremière! Vanaf 15 uur speelt de beiaard elk uur een muziekstuk (een preludium en fuga) uit 1777 dat onlangs werd herontdekt in Berlijn.

De manuscripten werden gedigitaliseerd door de Alamire Foundation in het Digital Lab, gevestigd in de Sint Norbertuspoort. Dankzij die scans zijn de documenten nu online beschikbaar voor onderzoekers en muzikanten.

Extra bijzonder: hetzelfde stuk klinkt vandaag ook elk uur op de beiaard van de
Parochialkirche in Berlijn.

(NL) Vandaag is het dag op dag 490 jaar geleden dat onze ‘patroonheilige’ Petrus Alamire de tol der natuur betaalde. Op 26 juni 1536 kwam er een einde aan zijn rijkgevulde leven. Als coördinator van de productie van luxueuze muziekmanuscripten, speelde hij een cruciale rol in de verspreiding en overlevering van het werk van drie generaties Franco-Vlaamse polyfonisten. Dankzij zijn onderneming kunnen we de composities van toonaangevende componisten als Okeghem, Josquin, Pierre de La Rue, Obrecht en vele anderen vandaag nog beluisteren.

Als telg van een koopmansfamilie uit Neurenberg, treffen we Petrus Imhoff voor het eerst in de Lage Landen aan in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Onder het pseudoniem verwijzend naar de toonhoogte A en de notennamen la, mi en re, staat hij in 1496-97 geregistreerd als lid van de Illustre-Lieve-Vrouwe Broederschap aan de Sint-Janskerk. Een drietal jaar later vinden we hem in Antwerpen, waar hij aan de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebroederschap een manuscript met motetten en andere polyfone zettingen bezorgde. Zijn reputatie als kalligraaf moest hem intussen zijn voorgegaan: hij presenteerde in 1503 een koorboek aan het Habsburgs-Bourgondische hof van Filips de Schone.

De Habsburgs-Bourgondische machthebbers zouden tussen 1503 en 1534 (Alamire’s pensioenjaar) de belangrijkste afnemers worden van Alamire’s werk, met manuscripten voor Maximiliaan I, Margaretha van Oostenrijk, Karel V en Maria van Hongarije. Verder kon hij welgestelde burgers als Raimond Fugger (van de rijke bankiersfamilie uit Augsburg) en Pompeius Occo (een agent van de Fuggers in Amsterdam) en zelfs de beruchte Engelse koning Hendrik VIII tot zijn klanten rekenen.

Naast zijn post als kopiist werkte Alamire ook als componist, instrumentenhandelaar, koerier (al werd hem door onder meer Erasmus verweten niet zo’n goede te zijn), als (dubbel)spion en als ‘koninklijke’ leraar in de mijnbouw.

(EN) Today marks exactly 490 years since our “patron saint,” Petrus Alamire, passed away. On 26 June 1536, his eventful life came to an end. As coordinator of the production of luxurious music manuscripts, he played a crucial role in the dissemination and preservation of the works of three generations of Franco-Flemish polyphonists. Thanks to his enterprise, we can still listen today to compositions by leading composers such as Okeghem, Josquin, Pierre de La Rue, Obrecht, and many others.

A scion of a merchant family from Nuremberg, Petrus Imhoff first appears in the Low Countries in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Under a pseudonym referring to the pitch A and its solmization syllables la-mi-re, he is recorded in 1496–97 as a member of the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady at St John’s Church. Some three years later, he can be found in Antwerp, where he supplied the Confraternity of Our Lady with a manuscript containing motets and other polyphonic settings. By then, his reputation as a calligrapher must already have preceded him: in 1503, he presented a choirbook to the Habsburg-Burgundian court of Philip the Fair.

Between 1503 and 1534 (the year of Alamire’s retirement), the Habsburg-Burgundian rulers became the principal patrons of his work, commissioning manuscripts for Maximilian I, Margaret of Austria, Charles V, and Mary of Hungary. He also counted rich burghers among his clients, such as Raimond Fugger of the wealthy Augsburg banking family, Pompeius Occo, the Fuggers’ agent in Amsterdam, and even the infamous King Henry VIII of England.

In addition to his role as a scribe, Alamire also worked as a composer, instrument dealer, courier (though Erasmus, among others, criticized him for not being particularly good at it), as a (double) agent, and as a “royal” instructor in mining.

(NL) Op 14 juni 1594 stierf Orlandus Lassus, een boegbeeld van de zestiende-eeuwse Europese muziek; eeuwen geleden — getuige zijn bijnamen ‘le divin Orlande’ en ‘princeps musicorum’ — maar ook vandaag.

Lassus’ ‘goddelijke’ bijnaam kwam niet zomaar uit de hemel vallen. Hij groeide hij uit tot een van de bekendste componisten van Europa, onder meer door de grote verspreiding die de ontluikende muziekdruk met zich meebracht. Sinds zijn eerste publicatie bij de Antwerpse uitgever Susato in 1555, verschenen over het hele continent edities met religieuze en profane werken van Lassus’ hand.

Zoals vele andere prominente Franco-Vlaamse componisten voor hem, zag Lassus het levenslicht in het Henegouwse Bergen in 1532. Als twaalfjarige knaap werd hij gerekruteerd door Ferrante Gonzaga, een generaal onder Karel V die destijds in de Lage Landen verbleef. In Gonzaga’s gevolg reisde de jonge Vlaming begin 1545 mee naar diens hertogelijke familie in Mantua. Na passages in Milaan, Napels en Rome trok Lassus op uitnodiging van Albrecht V van Beieren naar München, waar hij als zanger toetrad tot de hertogelijke kapel. Na het pensioen van zijn voorganger Ludwig Daser, nam hij de positie van kapelmeester in 1563 over — een post die hij zou bekleden tot aan zijn overlijden.

De Bergenaar componeerde zo goed als in alle dominante vocale genres van het moment: missen, motetten, madrigalen, chansons, Duitse lieder, … Hij pastte ze telkens aan de context aan, zonder daarbij zijn intens expressieve stijl te verliezen. Lassus’ veelzijdigheid toont zich trouwens ook in zijn taalbeheersing: hij gebruikte voor zijn muziek feilloos Latijnse, Italiaanse, Duitse en Franse teksten. Met andere woorden: een échte Europeaan.

(EN) On 14 June, 1594, Orlandus Lassus passed away — a leading figure of sixteenth-century European music then, as his nicknames ‘le divin Orlande’ and ‘princeps musicorum’ attest, and still today.

Lassus’s ‘divine’ nickname was no coincidence. He rose to become one of Europe’s most renowned composers, in part due to the widespread distribution made possible by the burgeoning music-printing industry. From his first publication with the Antwerp printer Susato in 1555 onwards, editions of both sacred and secular works by Lassus appeared across the continent.

Like many prominent Franco-Flemish composers before him, Lassus was born in Mons, in Hainaut, in 1532. At the age of twelve, he was recruited by Ferrante Gonzaga, a general under Emperor Charles V who was then stationed in the Low Countries. In early 1545, the young Fleming travelled with Gonzaga to his ducal family in Mantua. After posts in Milan, Naples, and Rome, Lassus moved to Munich at the invitation of Albert V of Bavaria, where he joined the ducal chapel as a singer. Following the retirement of his predecessor Ludwig Daser, he became Kapellmeister in 1563, a position he held until his death.

Lassus composed in virtually all the major vocal genres of his time: masses, motets, madrigals, chansons, German lieder, and more. He adapted his style to each context, without ever losing his intense expressiveness. His versatility is also evident in his command of languages: he flawlessly set texts in Latin, Italian, German, and French to music. In other words, a true European composer.

(NL) Als u tijdens het warme weer van de voorbije weken wandelde in de buurt van het Huis van de Polyfonie, heeft u misschien gehoord waarom het historische poortgebouw deze naam draagt. Vijf internationale topzangers gingen er namelijk in conclaaf voor de eerste sessies van het vernieuwde ParkCollegium. Onder begeleiding van stafmedewerker Stratton Bull verdiepten Jonty Coy (AU), Andrea Gavagnin (IT), Marc Mauillon (FR), Julian Podger (VK) en Vojtěch Semerád (CZ) zich in de rijkdom van de Franco-Vlaamse polyfonie.

ParkCollegium is geen traditioneel concerterend ensemble. Opgevat als een collectief dat projectmatig samenkomt, wijdt het zich aan praktijkgericht onderzoek van de Alamire Foundation. Tijdens elke sessie behandelen de zangers enkele thema’s waarrond in labo wordt geëxperimenteerd: van muziektheoretische vragen over compositorische stijlkenmerken, tot het zingen in historische akoestieken in het Alamire Interactive Sound Lab. En dit altijd vanuit de oorspronkelijke bron en notatie, in facsimile of via de projectie van gedigitaliseerde beelden uit de Integrated Database for Early Music.

Met dit nieuwe initiatief raakt de Alamire Foundation aan de kern van haar opdracht: het verbinden van theorie en praktijk door het creëren van een ruimte waar onderzoek, experiment en artistieke praktijk samenkomen en elkaar in alle vrijheid inspireren.

(EN) If you happened to walk near the House of Polyphony during the warm weather of the past few weeks, you may have heard why the historic gatehouse carries that name. Five leading international singers gathered there in conclave for the first sessions of the renewed ParkCollegium. Together with staff member Stratton Bull, Jonty Coy (AU), Andrea Gavagnin (IT), Marc Mauillon (FR), Julian Podger (UK), and Vojtěch Semerád (CZ) immersed themselves in the richness of Franco-Flemish polyphony.

ParkCollegium is not a traditional performing ensemble. Conceived as a collective that comes together on a project basis, it is dedicated to the practice‑based research of the Alamire Foundation. During each session, the singers explore a number of themes through laboratory-style experimentation: from music‑theoretical questions concerning compositional style to real-time comparisons of historical acoustics in the Alamire Interactive Sound Lab. And always working directly from the original sources and notation, whether in facsimile or through projected digitized images from the Integrated Database for Early Music.

With this new initiative, the Alamire Foundation touches the very core of its mission: connecting theory and practice by creating a space where research, experimentation, and artistic practice come together and inspire one another freely.

(NL) Erfgoeddag 2026 was een succes: we mochten heel wat bezoekers verwelkomen in het Huis van de Polyfonie tijdens de twee mini-recitals van Marie Petit. Achteraf konden de nieuwsgierigen de instrumenten uit de collectie zelfs van dichtbij bekijken, met een woordje uitleg.
