🇺🇸⚠️ If cars become driverless, do crash tests still matter? ⚠️🇺🇸
In a WardsAuto article following Euro NCAP’s 2026 Protocols Media Launch Event, journalist Paul Myles looked beyond today’s assisted driving (AD) systems and into the safety questions raised by a future with autonomous vehicles. 🚗
At Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium, Paul Myles and other journalists experienced live demonstrations of current and emerging safety technologies, from AEB systems reacting to hidden children and motorcyclists, to Mobileye’s integration of driver monitoring with ADAS. But as vehicles move closer to driverless operation, Euro NCAP Technical Director Richard Schram made one point clear: safety testing does not disappear. ✅
Crash Protection would still matter, and passive safety testing remains essential for a driverless vehicle. Airbags, restraints, occupant recognition and crash protection will still need rigorous testing, even if the human driver is no longer in control. ⚙️
Schram also pointed to a bigger question for regulators and cities: where and how should autonomous vehicles operate? 🌍
“That’s a debate that, obviously, a lot of cities are having,” Schram said. “Do we make a zone where only autonomous vehicles are allowed in? You still need access for bicycles and pedestrians, but how you monitor that with autonomous vehicles has to be thought about.” 🚘
Euro NCAP’s new rating scheme is designed with this future in mind. As Schram explained, “We’re undergoing, in this year, a case study with one of the well-known autonomous vehicle manufacturers and this is the beauty about this new rating scheme, that it can fit these types of vehicles as well.” ⚙️
Politics ties NHTSA’s hands in driving vehicle safety innovations, according to Euro NCAP.
