European Calcium Society

European Calcium Society European Calcium Society fan page In 1997 the “European Calcium Society” or ECS was officially created, and web site and newsletter were launched. Parys)

The origin of our society followed the various European Symposia on Calcium Binding Proteins in Normal and Transformed Cells that were initiated under the impulsion of Roland Pochet, Claus Heizmann, Jacques Haiech and Rosario Donato. Subsequent scientific meetings were organised on a two-year basis (Munster, 1998; Paris, 2000; Brussels, 2002; Cambridge, 2004; Strasbourg, 2006; Leuven, 2008; Warsa

w, 2010). More recently, it was decided to organise between the meetings also more focused workshops (Seix, 2007; Smolenice, 2009). The next workshop and meetings are scheduled again in Seix (2011) and in Toulouse (2012), respectively. The ECS is proud to have a large number of young members, and to support attendance of junior researchers to its meetings, by attributing travel grants and poster prizes. The Board of the ECS is since the General Assembly held in Warsaw (2010) composed of:
S. Moss (UK) - President
M. Moreau (France) - Vice-President
J.B. Parys (Belgium) - Secretary-General
R. Pochet (Belgium) - Treasurer
V. Gerke (Germany)
C. Heizmann (Switzerland)
J. Kuznicki (Poland)
C. Leclerc (France)

The 18th International Meeting of the European Calcium Society was for the first time happening outside Europe, i.e. in Doha (Qatar). In spite of the geopolitic turmoils, 180 participants registered coming from Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, North and South America, and Oceania. And they were right: it proved an excellent meeting, as well at the scientific level as at the social and cultural level.
After an initial day completely devoted to presentations by our junior members, the next 4 days of meeting contained 3 keynote lectures (by Drs. Rizzuto, Lippincott-Schwartz, and Yule), 12 oral sessions and a continuous presentation of scientific posters.

Many thanks to Dr. Machaca and its team from Weill Cornell University in Doha for the flawless organiszation!

Interorganelle communication has become a central theme in contemporary cell biology, revealing that virtually all organelles establish membrane contact sites (MCS) with one another. These specialized subdomains bring organelles into close apposition without fusion, enabling the direct exchange of molecules, the coordination of metabolic pathways, and the integration of signaling events. The discovery of MCS has reshaped long-standing views of organelle autonomy, highlighting instead how cellular architecture is grounded in interconnected compartments. Heterotypic organelle interactions support functions that neither partner could achieve independently, advancing our understanding of spatially organized metabolism, signaling fidelity, and organelle homeostasis.

The meeting will guide participants toward an up-to-date understanding of:
-The tools and methods used to study MCS, including state-of-the-art imaging, proteomics, and functional assays;
-The molecular composition of MCS and the regulatory mechanisms that govern their formation and dynamics;
-The roles of MCS in organelle biology and cellular homeostasis, with emphasis on metabolic coordination and signaling as well as emerging findings on new types and functions of MCS
-The potential of MCS as a novel therapeutic space, highlighting opportunities for drug discovery in both rare and common diseases.
