On 5th of April, members of the America Europe Youth Forum (AEYF) had the opportunity to visit the Belgian Permanent Representation to NATO and NATO Headquarters. It was an enriching experience that shed light on the transatlantic relationship.

We had the privilege of being welcomed by Ambassador Ariadne Petridis, who shared insights into Belgium's role within NATO and the organization's overarching mission. Attaché Bert Goormans delivered an insightful presentation on NATO's structure, with a particular focus on the pressing topics of cyber and hybrid warfare, which are of paramount importance in today's world. We extend our gratitude to Ambassador Petridis, Attaché Goormans for hosting us. Special thanks is also directed towards Topsana Du Bois and Jasper Maesen for their support in making this visit possible.

It was truly a pleasure to learn from such esteemed professionals and AEYF is immensely grateful for the valuable time shared. This visit was not only educational but also reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening transatlantic relations through fostering dialogue and understanding across the ocean.

Last Friday, AEYF had the opportunity to visit the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS), situated in Middelburg (The Netherlands). RIAS focuses on research that aims to stimulate the understanding of historical themes in the transatlantic relationship.

Through a warm welcome by Professor Dario Fazzi, Dr. Gaetano Di Tommaso and the RIAS Staff, AEYF was able to acquire an enhanced understanding about RIAS. There was also room for some academic content with a presentation focusing on the impact of US military bases through a historical perspective.

As the RIAS hosts one of the leading collections in Europe on American history, including printed materials, archival documents and microfilm, AEYF was able to take a look at impressive the collection. To end the day in a pleasant manner, AEYF received a first handed tutorial on the process of reading a microfilm.
Through this visit, ideas about the transatlantic relationship were shared.

We would like to thank RIAS once again to provide our members with a “food for thought” about transatlanticism and insightful information about conducting research.

As the America Europe Youth Forum is kicking off this new academic year, we would like to look back to a unique event that our board attended last May, the German Marshall Fund Brussels Forum 2023.

The Brussels Forum is organized every year by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), a nonpartisan transatlantic policy organization that supports the relationship and understanding between the United States and Europe. Their core mission is driven by values of democracy, diversity, integrity and freedom. Their approach includes policy analysis on transatlantic and global issues, civil society's projects support, and providing training opportunities through a range of programmes to young leaders.

During those two days, important discussions with global leaders, policy-makers and experts were held on pressing issues encompassing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the future of transatlantic relations, Ukraine’s recovery and the 2024 U.S. elections. NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, was also invited to discuss the achievements and challenges the transatlantic alliance and NATO are facing against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, along with the prospect of Ukraine's potential membership.

The AEYF Board was honored to be part of this high-level conference which allowed us to proudly represent our organization.
This event provided the opportunity for the board to offer a place for dialogue, to share ideas, exemplifying the commitment of young people to the future of the transatlantic alliance. We would also like to warmly thank the Europe Fund, which made this opportunity possible for us.
