PACO DONATO

🇬🇧 Among the key figures at the upcoming Sakka Ten Autumn Trees event will be Paco Donato, who has for many years been dedicated to the study and promotion of botanical and Japanese culture, as well as bonsai and suiseki.

Born in Rome in 1963, Paco Donato lives and works at the Botanical Garden Museum of La Sapienza University in Rome, where he is the manager and curator of the Japanese garden and the botanical collection of peonies.

His professional work encompasses the care, conservation and promotion of botanical heritage, alongside extensive teaching and outreach activities. He leads guided tours and seminars dedicated to the history of the garden and the various compositional styles of Japanese gardens.

Over the years, he has forged important relationships with the Japanese Cultural Institute and the Japanese Embassy, collaborating on numerous cultural initiatives and also contributing to the design and creation of the Japanese garden at the Botanical Garden in Naples.

His expertise also extends to bonsai and suiseki. In 2014, he obtained a Bonsai Instructor diploma from the Bonsai Art School and co-founded the Shizuka Bonsai and Suiseki Association. His training thus combines an understanding of nature and the landscape with the culture of traditional Japanese arts.

SUNDAY 18 OCTOBER (2.00 pm – 3.30 pm)

Paco Donato will lead a talk on suiseki entitled ‘The characteristics to look for in a quality stone’, a session dedicated to understanding and evaluating stones, to help participants recognise the characteristics to observe and seek in a suiseki: shape, structure, surface, colour, patina, character and evocative power.

For recognising a high-quality stone is not merely a matter of identifying its beauty; it means learning to interpret its natural form, understanding its character and recognising its ability to evoke a landscape, an atmosphere, or a natural dimension greater than itself.

Paco Donato’s lecture will be followed by a talk by Daniela Schifano on Seki Kazari, the art of displaying suiseki.

Two complementary sessions offering an in-depth exploration of an art form in which knowledge of the stone and the ability to showcase it through display are inseparable.

🇮🇹 Tra i protagonisti del prossimo Sakka Ten Autumn Trees ci sarà anche Paco Donato, da molti anni impegnato nello studio e nella divulgazione della cultura botanica e giapponese, oltre che del bonsai e del suiseki.

Nato a Roma nel 1963, Paco Donato vive e lavora presso il Museo Orto Botanico dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma, dove è responsabile e conservatore del giardino giapponese e della collezione botanica delle Peonie.

La sua attività professionale comprende la cura, la conservazione e la valorizzazione del patrimonio botanico, insieme a una intensa attività didattica e divulgativa. Conduce visite guidate e seminari dedicati alla storia del giardino e ai diversi stili compositivi del giardino giapponese.

Nel corso degli anni ha consolidato importanti rapporti con l’Istituto Giapponese di Cultura e con l’Ambasciata del Giappone, collaborando a numerose iniziative culturali e contribuendo anche alla progettazione e realizzazione del giardino giapponese dell’Orto Botanico di Napoli.

Il suo percorso comprende inoltre il bonsai e il suiseki. Nel 2014 ha conseguito il diploma di Istruttore Bonsai presso la Scuola d’Arte Bonsai e ha cofondato l’associazione Shizuka Bonsai e Suiseki. Una formazione che unisce quindi la conoscenza della natura e del paesaggio alla cultura delle arti tradizionali giapponesi.

Paco Donato sarà protagonista della conferenza dedicata al suiseki "Le caratteristiche da ricercare in una pietra di qualità", un intervento dedicato alla conoscenza e alla valutazione delle pietre, per comprendere quali caratteristiche osservare e ricercare in un suiseki: forma, struttura, superficie, colore, patina, carattere e capacità evocativa.

Perché riconoscere una pietra di qualità non significa soltanto individuarne la bellezza, significa imparare a leggere quella forma naturale, comprenderne il carattere e riconoscere la capacità che essa possiede di evocare un paesaggio, un'atmosfera, una dimensione naturale più grande di sé.

La conferenza di Paco Donato sarà seguita dall’intervento di Daniela Schifano dedicato al Seki Kazari, l’arte dell’esposizione del suiseki.

Due momenti complementari per approfondire un’arte nella quale la conoscenza della pietra e la capacità di valorizzarla attraverso l’esposizione sono inseparabili.

🇬🇧 Among the key figures at this year’s Sakka Ten Autumn Trees will be Daniela Schifano, a leading figure in the Italian and international suiseki scene, who has been dedicated to the study, research and promotion of this ancient Japanese art for over twenty years.

Her passion began in 2005, when she was captivated by images of some Ligurian stones published in a book on bonsai. From that moment on, she embarked on a journey of study that led her to engage with the leading Italian and international organisations in the field of suiseki.

Over the years, she joined the AIAS, the UBI and the Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe, where she is now a member of the Executive Committee. In 2016, she also joined the Nippon Suiseki Association and took part for the first time in the Japan Suiseki Exhibition in Tokyo, the most important international event dedicated to suiseki.

Her work has focused in particular on the study of suiseki display, delving deeply into the Keidō tradition.

For Daniela, in fact, a stone is never simply a stone to be observed, because the accompanying elements and the display space interact to create an image capable of enhancing the stone’s nature, the season and the atmosphere it evokes.

This is precisely the heart of Seki Kazari: creating a harmony in which every element helps to reveal the stone’s personality, without ever overshadowing it.

Her sensitivity has been honed through years of study, participation in exhibitions in Italy and abroad, awards, her work as a judge and speaker, articles and outreach activities.

CHIHARU IMAI | GUEST OF HONOUR

It is with great pleasure that NBSKE announces Chiharu Imai, a Japanese master and guest of honour at the Sakka Ten Autumn Trees 2026 Congress.

Born in Kanagawa on 5 April 1962, Chiharu Imai began his journey in bonsai at the age of just 19, joining the prestigious Seikou-en, where he studied and worked for six years under the guidance of Master Tomio Yamada.

In 1991, he embarked on his independent professional career, founding his own garden, Chiharuen, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Today, he continues his work in cultivation and training there, keeping alive an approach to bonsai deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.

His work has also been recognised at major national exhibitions: in 1998, he received the Minister of the Environment’s Award at the 23rd Sakufu-ten, subsequently winning further awards at the same event.

For over twenty years, Master Imai has been sharing his expertise outside Japan, with a particularly significant presence in Europe, Italy and, above all, Spain, through workshops, demonstrations and courses aimed at bonsai enthusiasts of various levels.

His expertise is also evidenced by his collaboration with leading international publishers in the sector: as early as the 1990s, his work appeared in major specialist magazines, featuring in-depth articles on the training of junipers and plums.

At the Sakka Ten Autumn Trees 2026, we will therefore have the opportunity to meet a Master who embodies a living link between the tradition of Japanese bonsai and its contemporary evolution.

ALDO TOLLINI

🇬🇧 Sakka Ten Autumn Trees will once again have the pleasure and honour of hosting Prof. Aldo Tollini, one of Italy’s leading figures in the study and understanding of traditional Japanese culture.

A former lecturer in Classical Japanese at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Prof. Tollini has devoted over forty years to the study of Japanese culture, with a particular focus on medieval Japan, the Zen and Chan Buddhist traditions, and the translation and interpretation of classical texts.

His experience and his ability to make complex concepts accessible have also been a constant feature of NBSKE’s cultural journey for many years. As far back as 2008, Professor Tollini had delivered a series of lectures for our association, which represented an important opportunity for deeper understanding and growth.

Understanding Japanese culture, in fact, means going beyond the simple translation of words; it means grasping the context, the nuances and the deeper meaning of aesthetic and philosophical concepts that often have no immediate equivalent in our own culture.

It is precisely this ability to convey not only words but the essence of a culture that makes Professor Tollini’s contribution to our journey so valuable.

SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER (10.00 am – 11.30 am) Aldo Tollini will take centre stage, alongside Edoardo Rossi, in a lecture dedicated to one of the greatest poets of the Japanese tradition: ‘The Poetics of Matsuo Bashō’. This will be a journey through Bashō’s poetics and the cultural world that enabled his extraordinary expression through poetry, aesthetic sensibility and a profound relationship with nature.

An event designed for those who wish to go beyond the technical aspects of bonsai and explore the cultural and aesthetic roots of Japan, to gain a better understanding of the sensibility that still permeates many of its traditional arts today.

🇮🇹 Sakka Ten Autumn Trees avrà ancora una volta il piacere e l’onore di ospitare il Prof. Aldo Tollini, una delle figure di riferimento in Italia per lo studio e la comprensione della cultura tradizionale giapponese.

Già docente di Lingua giapponese classica all’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, il Prof. Tollini ha dedicato oltre quarant’anni allo studio della cultura giapponese, con particolare attenzione al Giappone medievale, alla tradizione buddhista Zen e Chan e alla traduzione e interpretazione dei testi classici.

La sua esperienza e la sua capacità di rendere accessibili concetti complessi hanno accompagnato per molti anni anche il percorso culturale di NBSKE. CHIHARU IMAI | OSPITE D’ONORE

È con grande piacere che NBSKE annuncia Chiharu Imai, Maestro giapponese e ospite d’onore del Congresso Sakka Ten Autumn Trees 2026.

Nato a Kanagawa il 5 aprile 1962, Imai Chiharu ha iniziato il proprio percorso nel bonsai a soli 19 anni, entrando nel prestigioso Seikou-en, dove per sei anni ha studiato e lavorato sotto la guida del Maestro Tomio Yamada.

Nel 1991 ha iniziato la sua attività professionale indipendente, fondando il proprio giardino, Chiharuen, nella prefettura di Kanagawa. Oggi continua qui il suo lavoro di coltivazione e formazione, mantenendo vivo un approccio al bonsai profondamente legato alla tradizione giapponese.

Il suo percorso è stato riconosciuto anche in importanti esposizioni nazionali: nel 1998 ha ricevuto il premio del Ministro dell’Ambiente alla 23ª Sakufu-ten, ottenendo successivamente altri riconoscimenti nella stessa manifestazione.

Da oltre vent’anni il Maestro Imai porta la propria esperienza anche fuori dal Giappone, con una presenza particolarmente significativa in Europa, Italia e soprattutto Spagna, attraverso workshop, dimostrazioni e corsi rivolti a bonsaisti di diversi livelli.

La sua esperienza è documentata anche dalla collaborazione con importanti realtà editoriali internazionali del settore: già negli anni ’90 il suo lavoro compariva sulle principali riviste specializzate, con approfondimenti dedicati alla formazione di ginepri e pruni.

Al Sakka Ten Autumn Trees 2026 avremo quindi l'opportunità di incontrare un Maestro che rappresenta una continuità viva tra la tradizione del bonsai giapponese e la sua evoluzione contemporanea.

Cada vez queda menos para el Congreso Internacional Sakka Ten Autumn Trees, y queremos recordar a todos los socios de la NBSKE que aún es posible presentar sus bonsáis y suiseki para la exposición.

La exposición no es simplemente una recopilación de ejemplares, sino un recorrido armónico en el que cada bonsái, cada suiseki y cada elemento complementario entra en relación con los demás, contribuyendo a la construcción de un conjunto equilibrado, coherente y capaz de transmitir una visión profundamente ligada a la cultura japonesa.

🌿 Si tienes un bonsái que proponer, deberá haber sido cultivado por ti durante al menos 5 años, g***r de excelente salud y presentar un nivel adecuado de cuidado estético, orden y limpieza.

The Sakka Ten Autumn Trees International Congress is fast approaching, and we would like to remind all NBSKE members that it is still possible to submit their bonsai and suiseki for the exhibition.

The exhibition is not simply a collection of specimens but a harmonious journey in which every bonsai, every suiseki and every accompanying element interacts with the others, contributing to the creation of a balanced, coherent whole that conveys a vision deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

🌿 If you wish to submit a bonsai, it must have been cultivated by you for at least 5 years, be in excellent health and display an appropriate level of aesthetic care, tidiness and cleanliness.

🪨 If you wish to submit a suiseki, it must be complete with a daiza or suiban and the relevant display stand.

For the preliminary assessment, you must submit good-quality photographs, indicating:

📌 height, width and depth of the specimen
📌 for bonsai, the scientific name of the species

Der Internationale Kongress „Sakka Ten Autumn Trees“ rückt immer näher, und wir möchten alle NBSKE-Mitglieder daran erinnern, dass es noch möglich ist, eigene Bonsai und Suiseki für die Ausstellung einzureichen.

Die Ausstellung ist nicht einfach nur eine Sammlung von Exemplaren, sondern ein harmonischer Parcours, auf dem jeder Bonsai, jeder Suiseki und jedes Begleitelement in Beziehung zu den anderen tritt und so zur Schaffung eines ausgewogenen, stimmigen Ganzen beiträgt, das eine Vision vermittelt, die tief mit der japanischen Kultur verbunden ist.

🌿 Wenn du einen Bonsai vorschlagen möchtest, muss dieser seit mindestens 5 Jahren von dir selbst gepflegt worden sein, sich in bester Gesundheit befinden und ein angemessenes Maß an ästhetischer Pflege, Ordnung und Sauberkeit aufweisen.

🪨 Wenn du einen Suiseki vorschlagen möchtest, muss dieser komplett mit Daiza oder Suiban sowie der dazugehörigen Ausstellungshalterung sein.
