📚 Today, we are at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, where together with the fair, the International Publishers Association, Associazione Italiana Editori, Syndicat national de l'édition, the Publishers Association and IBBY International Board on Books for Young People, we signed an appeal to join forces to promote reading among young people

📢 To conclude the event "Building the Future Generation of Readers: Best Practices and Policies for Reading Promotion", we called upon UNESCO, the European Commission, and all national and international institutions to renew their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote book reading, especially among young people, as an indispensable tool for strengthening and developing open and democratic societies

The European Publishers Associations are already active on their national level to promote reading among young generations. Initiatives such as in Italy, Les Petits Champion de la Lecture in France and the National Year of Reading in the UK put reading in the spotlight. At the European level, FEP constantly reminds politicians about the importance of high literacy skills for our society and democracy, and we are part of the European Authors Day Consortium, which, through the slogan READ. for Real organises thousands of reading events each year, allowing readers to meet authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers and everyone involved in the promotion of reading.

It was such a pleasure and an honour to be at La Foire du Livre de Bruxelles opening last week and to organise a reading of the bilingual books published through our project, Tales of EUkraine

Around 20 Ukrainian children from different parts of Belgium gathered at the Fair, listening to a reading in their mother tongue, receiving books from Commissioner for Culture Glenn Micallef and enjoying a moment together 🙌

Thank you to The Association Of Ukrainian Women in Belgium for helping us with the organisation!

FEP joins the International Publishers Association, Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and the EIBF in condemning the exclusion of three bookshops from the German Bookshop Award. This decision highlights serious deficiencies in terms of the procedure which led to the exclusion and transparency, and directly undermines the values of freedom of expression and freedom to publish on which the publishing sector is based.

FEP President, Sonia Draga, said: ‘European publishers are concerned that these bookshops were excluded without being provided any justification. Bookshops are places where ideas are exchanged and new opinions are shaped. We demand clarity on the process that led to the exclusion of the three bookshops and, in the absence of a clear process and transparency, their immediate reintegration in the German Bookshop Award’.

Today, FEP President Sonia Draga spoke at the Intergraf event “Shaping the Future with Books”, which brought together leading publishers, printers, suppliers, researchers, and policymakers to explore the trends, challenges, and innovations shaping Europe’s book ecosystem.

In her speech, she highlighted both the opportunities and the challenges facing the European publishing sector. Addressing the among European citizens, she emphasised that stakeholders across the book value chain can learn from one another and replicate successful initiatives and added that FEP will continue to encourage European Union policymakers to support actions that place reading at the heart of the EU agenda.

On the EU , while acknowledging the exemption of printed products from its scope, she underlined the importance of continued dialogue between publishers and printing companies to develop innovative solutions that combine respect for nature with the efficient functioning of the sector.

On , Sonia Draga recalled that during negotiations on the AI Act, FEP defended the principle of transparency from AI developers regarding the sources used to train their systems, despite companies’ reluctance to disclose this information. She also noted that a potential solution could emerge from Member States exploring the possibility of a presumption of use in cases where such disclosure is refused.

She further presented key figures illustrating the strength of the European publishing sector: an annual turnover of nearly €25 billion, around 600,000 new titles published each year, and revenues still predominantly driven by print book sales. More statistics are available on the FEP website: https://fep-fee.eu/Presentation-European-Book-Market-Statistics-2024-25-at-the-Frankfurt-Book-Fair

Finally, she called on Europe to remove its internal barriers and to continue investing in culture, research, young people, and innovation, enabling the continent to become the epicentre of a non-violent “explosion of knowledge”.
