HOW TO BREAK UP MICROSOFT?

At the turn of the millennium, competition authorities in the US and the EU considered breaking up Microsoft. The company was abusing its market power in operating systems. Experts drew up a breakup plan that would create two "Baby Bills" -- two smaller companies -- in reference to Bill Gates, Microsoft's founder.

Under the influence of laissez-faire economists, competition authorities backtracked. Now, 30 years later, the same company is creating many similar problems for competitors and users of digital services. It's time to dust off the "Baby Bills" plan.

So how would a Microsoft breakup look today? Especially at a moment when the EU is desperate to detach from the US and its Tech oligarchs?
Two competition experts will share their views on how to push through a Big Tech break-up and give Europe a credible path to digital sovereignty and independence.

A little spring rain didn’t stop us:
A healthy democracy requires regular & consistent attention to thrive🙌

Today, Women Against Fascism gathered outside the European Commission for our monthly Democracy Coffee meetup:

Concerned about the health of our democracies:
To exchange & raise awareness of EC proposals & actions that threaten our democracies.

This month, we stood up for citizens’ digital rights and raised our voices against the adoption of the deportation act.

Lessons from the past:
with Europe Day coming up, we need to remember the values, motivations and benefits of healthy democratic societies in Europe, which was not built on dependence on un-regulated tech giants or the erosion of human rights and a fictional migration crisis.

We meet every first Tuesday of the month at Rond-Point Schuman to keep the spotlight on democracy and call out where rights are being eroded.

Thank you to everyone who came out and stood with us in the rain — your presence matters.
