The Last Post Association is an independent, voluntary, non-profit-making organisation. It was the Association that first founded the Last Post Ceremony back in 1928, and it is the Association that is still responsible for the day-to-day org

anisation of this unique act of homage. It also administers the Last Post Fund, which provides the financial resources necessary to support the ceremony. It is a tradition that the Buglers of the Association should wear the uniform of the local volunteer. The Last Post was a bugle call played in the British Army (and in the armies of many other lands) to mark the end of the day's labours and the onset of the night's rest. In the context of the Last Post ceremony (and in the broader context of remembrance), it has come to represent a final farewell to the fallen at the end of their earthly labours and at the onset of their eternal rest. Similarly, the Reveille was a bugle call played at the beginning of the day, to rouse the troops from slumber and to call them to their duties. In the context of the Last Post ceremony (and in the broader context of remembrance), the Reveille symbolises not only a return to daily life at the end of the act of homage, but also the ultimate resurrection of the fallen on the Day of Judgement. The Last Post takes place every evening at 8.00 PM.

De Last Post Association is een Ieperse vrijwilligersorganisatie. De vereniging werd opgericht in 1928 en organiseert sindsdien elke avond de Last Post plechtigheid. Zij stelt zich tot doel deze traditie eeuwig in stand te houden. De Last Post Association wil bijdragen tot alles wat de betekenis van de hulde kan versterken en ook eerbied wekken voor alles wat de Menenpoort vertegenwoordigt: het offer en het lijden, maar ook de solidariteit, het plichtsbewustzijn en de heldhaftigheid van de soldaten die aan de strijd deelnamen. Het is een traditie dat de klaroeners van de organisatie het uniform van de vrijwilligers van de lokale brandweer dragen, waartoe ze behoren. De organisatie beheert eveneens het Last Post fonds, dat de financiële middelen voorziet voor de ondersteuning van de plechtigheid. De Last Post vindt elke dag om 20.00 uur plaats.

The daily Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres on Saturday 13 June 2026 was again very well attended. Many thanks to the Ypres Surrey Pipes & Drums for their always excellent musical participation. It was the 33,992nd day of this daily tribute to the Fallen.

Only a few more ceremonies before we reach a new milestone: 34,000 daily acts of remembrance.

JOHN UNDERHILL MBE DECEASED / OVERLEDEN - 11/04/2026

It is with heavy hearts that we have received the news of the passing of John Underhill MBE. He was one of the three Patrons of the Last Post Association. For more than 30 years, he was not only a loyal visitor, sponsor and supporter, but above all, he had a clear vision of how we can maintain and safeguard our mission - honoring and remembering the fallen soldiers - in the future. His presence and, most of all, his friendship will be deeply missed. Together with the fallen, we will keep him in our thoughts during this evening’s ceremony. The chairman, all members and buglers wish to offer their heartfelt condolences to Tiggy, Dan and the entire family.

Met veel verdriet hebben wij het nieuws vernomen van het overlijden van John Underhill MBE. Hij was een van de drie beschermheren van de Last Post Association. Meer dan 30 jaar lang was hij niet alleen een trouwe bezoeker, sponsor en supporter, maar bovenal had hij een heldere visie op hoe we onze missie - het eren en gedenken van de gesneuvelde soldaten - ook in de toekomst in stand kunnen houden en veiligstellen. Zijn aanwezigheid en vooral zijn vriendschap zullen zeer gemist worden. Samen met de gesneuvelden, zullen we hem in onze gedachten houden tijdens de plechtigheid van vanavond. De voorzitter, alle leden en klaroeners willen hun oprechte medeleven betuigen aan Tiggy, Dan en de ganse familie.

01/04/2006 - 01/04/2026: BENOIT MOTTRIE CHAIRMAN FOR 20 YEARS / 20 JAAR VOORZITTER

On 1 April 2006, Benoit Mottrie succeeded his uncle Guy Gruwez as sixth chairman of the Last Post Association. Today, Wednesday 1 April 2026, marks his 20th year as chairman. Many congratulations Benoit and a very big thank you for your many and tireless efforts to continue the work and mission of the Last Post Association: we will continue to remember them.

Op 1 april 2006 volgde Benoit Mottrie zijn oom Guy Gruwez op als zesde voorzitter van de Last Post Association. Vandaag, woensdag 1 april 2026 is hij 20 jaar voorzitter. Een hele dikke proficiat Benoit en bijzonder veel dank voor jouw vele en nooit aflatende inspanningen om het werk en de missie van de Last Post Association verder te zetten: we zullen hen blijven herdenken.
