We’re thrilled to introduce the two speakers joining us on April 21st.

Sonja Snacken, Professor of Criminology, Penology and Sociology of Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and former CPT expert, will explore the rights of detained persons through a European lens, examining the standards that exist on paper and what it takes to make them real.

Joyce Windey, legal officer at the CTRG (Central Supervisory Council for Prisons), will take us closer to home. She’ll discuss how human rights oversight actually works in Belgium and zoom in on Article 13 ECHR, the right to an effective remedy. This will include the right of detainees to bring complaints before a judicial body.

Together, they bridge theory and practice in a way that’s rare and genuinely valuable.

Day 2 of UNYA Week brought us into the world of journalism and media 🎙️

We started the morning at MO* Magazine, where we got to know their story and mission: courageous, human and global journalism that makes a changing world understandable. What stayed with us was their thoughtful approach to finding a balance between in-depth, slow journalism and shorter formats, reaching new audiences without losing depth.

In the afternoon, we visited the editorial office of DPG Media, home to HLN and VTM News. War correspondent Robin Ramaekers gave us a candid look at what it means to report from the field, a fitting conversation for a week centred on human rights in conflict zones.

Big thanks to MO* Magazine and DPG Media for welcoming us, and to all participants for the great energy and sharp questions throughout the day.

We are pleased to announce our upcoming lecture, “UN: Still United?” which is a thought-provoking panel discussion that dives into one of the most pressing questions of our time: how united is the United Nations today and what does the future of global cooperation look like?

In an era marked by geopolitical tensions, shifting alliances, and growing global challenges, this event brings together experts from diverse backgrounds to critically reflect on the role, relevance, and limitations of the UN. Expect a dynamic debate around key issues, including whether the UN is still capable of effective multilateral action and whether we may be expecting too much from it. The discussion will be interactive, with opportunities for the audience to engage directly with the speakers.

Practical information:
📅 Wednesday, 1 April 2026
🕰️ 19:30
📍Campus Boekentoren, Blandijn (Auditorium Jan Broeckx), Ghent University

The first confirmed speaker is Dirk De Bièvre, Professor of Political Science, International Relations and International Political Economy at the University of Antwerp, specializing in international trade and multilateral cooperation.

Day 1 of UNYA Week took us to Brussels for a full day on European diplomacy 🇪🇺

We started the morning at the European External Action Service, where experts walked us through the EU’s diplomatic structure and its evolving priorities in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, with a particular focus on the EU–UN partnership at the heart of multilateral action.

In the afternoon, professor Sven Biscop of the Egmont Institute offered a candid assessment of the EU’s current strategic posture, its relationship with the Trump administration, and what meaningful policy reform could look like going forward.

A heartfelt thank you to the EEAS and the Egmont Institute for welcoming us and to everyone who joined, your curiosity and engagement made the day what it was.

UNYA organised the first lecture of this semester on “The Politics and Practice of Border Management: Control and Accountability at Europe’s Frontiers.”
We were honoured to welcome our incredible panelists:

Flor Didden – Policy Officer Migration at 11.11.11

Jean-Louis De Brouwer – Director of the European Affairs Programme at the Egmont Institute

Baptiste Amieux – Global Thematic Specialist to the EU on Immigration and Border Governance at IOM

Together, we discussed the EU’s evolving migration policies, examined its moral and legal responsibilities towards asylum seekers, and critically discussed the controversial role of Frontex in illegal pushbacks. From historical perspectives to current challenges, the conversation highlighted the urgent need for accountability, justice, and human rights at Europe’s borders.

❗TONIGHT at 7:30PM❗
PANEL DISCUSSION: The Politics and Practice of Border Management

From headlines about ICE raids in US cities to Europe’s own debates on deportations, surveillance and enforcement powers, border control is back at the centre of politics.
But what should border management look like when security meets the rule of law and when accountability is more than a buzzword?
Join UNYA Ghent for a panel discussion:
“The Politics and Practice of Border Management: control and accountability at Europe’s frontiers.”
We’ll unpack the trade-offs, the legal safeguards and what 'responsibility' means in practice (plus time for Q&A).

Speakers:
- Flor Didden
- Jean-Louis De Brouwer
- Baptiste Amieux
