Richard Serra’s Verb List (1967–68) sits at one of the conceptual starting points of Mounting Tension.
Serra’s list brings actions together with forces and conditions such as “tension”, “gravity”, “entropy” and “equilibrium”. It proposes sculpture not as something static, but as “a collection of actions and forces.”

Seen through this lens, the works throughout Mounting Tension become less like isolated objects and more like temporary states: things compressed, stretched, embedded, scattered, held together or on the verge of coming apart.

Mounting Tension brings together four generations of artists whose works approach tension as both a physical condition and a broader social, psychological and political force.

Across the exhibition, bodies are compressed, suspended or held together; materials bend, accumulate, resist or collapse; structures appear caught between stability and release.

Rather than treating tension as a single theme, the exhibition looks at the different forces that act upon bodies, materials and structures, and at what happens when these forces are held, displaced or suddenly released.

Timo Demollin | Structural Tension

Timo Demollin often works with things that have already been put to work, recasting the social relations they carry.

For 20368-20369-20370-20371-23222, however, the material enters the work before ever having served its intended purpose. Demollin acquired an unused 1995 stock of silver-plated wire links made for repairing broken copper wires in telephone cables. A box of links is spilled out onto the exhibition floor, forming a loose field of shimmering metal. Its boundaries remain unfixed: as visitors move through the space and step onto the work, the wire links gradually shift, scatter and gather.

The work’s title, itself a scatter of numbers, strings together the file numbers of successive parliamentary bills through which the Dutch state postal and telecommunications service was reorganised and privatised during the 1980s and 90s. In 1995, the Dutch state lost its position as majority shareholder, further loosening the company’s ties to direct state control.

Within Mounting Tension, Demollin’s work brings material and structural forms of tension together. Social and economic transformations become embedded in physical material, while the sculpture itself remains subject to external forces, shifting as people move through and encounter it.

June Crespo | Material Tension

June Crespo’s sculptures bring together fragments of bodies, industrial materials and architectural forms, creating unexpected encounters between materials and the physical associations they carry.

Her work approaches sculpture not as a static object, but through the forces and relationships that shape it: materials meet, support, press against or interrupt one another. The body is often present indirectly, emerging through weight, contact and proximity.

This makes Crespo’s practice particularly resonant within Mounting Tension, an exhibition that looks at how sculpture can make tension tangible. Across the exhibition, tension is understood not only as something psychological or political, but as a physical condition: something held within materials, between forms, or released when forces shift.

June Crespo’s work can also be seen in Belgium this autumn as part of Contour Biennale in Mechelen.

“The exhibition’s namesake work, titled POV (Point of View), is a selection of images that were not taken by Cole, but were found by him. Presumably from the 1980s, the collection of old dia photographs depicts landscapes across mainly France and Belgium, locations that the artist also frequently visited; hence why he was able to identify them. Recognition thus becomes an encounter across time rather than an act of authorship. A special emotional connection that stems from the memories of the past is being shown through the eyes of an unknown stranger, years apart.”
