Former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has warned that fighting corruption in office can make leaders targets, saying, “The fight you engage in fights back.” Speaking to Africanews’ Global Conversation, Chakwera said his reform agenda was hindered by major crises, including COVID-19, cyclones, and drought, forcing him to declare a state of national disaster in each of his four years in office. He defended his anti-corruption record, arguing that real reform takes time and often clashes with public expectations. Now leading the opposition Malawi Congress Party, Chakwera said he remains committed to serving the public and rebuilding trust.
