Listening is a choice.

Recent discussions around the use of "ching chang chong" in music have once again highlighted how difficult conversations about anti-Asian racism can become.
When Asian communities speak up about experiences of racism, the conversation too often shifts away from impact and towards defending intent. What follows are familiar responses: "it's just a joke", "people are too sensitive", "freedom of speech".

This post is not about censorship. It's about listening.

It's about recognising that phrases many dismiss as harmless carry a long history of mockery, exclusion and racism for those who have experienced them.

Representation is not only about being visible. It's also about being respected.

Another look behind the curtain of Asian Persuasion.

You’ve seen some of these moments before. What keeps surprising us is how much of this journey lives in between: the listening, the laughing, the trust built one conversation at a time.

And while these moments keep us going, we’ll be honest with you: we’ve learned to set boundaries too. Because we’re exhausted and saying “no” is still hard sometimes. 😅 Turns out protecting our energy is part of the work too.

Last week's call went further than we expected. Thank you for believing in what we're building. 💛

But we need to be honest. Signups from Belgium-based Asian artists are painfully low. There's a real lack of visibility and opportunity for Asian creatives right here at home. We want to change that.

Asian Persuasion is a small nonprofit, we work with limited funds. We must prioritize artists based in Belgium or nearby European regions. The closer, the better.

The stage in November is tight. No full bands or large groups. We still need 1 dance act (solo/duo), 1 martial arts act (performative), 1 music act (20–30 min, high energy, small setup).

We welcome artists with Asian heritage and lived experiences.

Beyond this event, we have other projects, events, and collabs in the works. Our focus is building a local foundation, but we'll expand as we grow.

Asian Persuasion is growing and we're looking for new talent to join our roster.
For our November 2026 edition, we're specifically booking live performers in music, dance and martial arts.

But we'd still love to hear from you if you operate in other areas: speakers, vendors, volunteers etc…

A note from us. We've been carrying this conversation for a while and it's time to share honestly.

What Asian Persuasion looks like on stage is only half the story. The other half happens after hours, between full-time jobs, funded from personal savings, supported by volunteers who believe in the same vision.

We've built four events across four cities so far (Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels and Bruges) without structural funding. No staff. No safety net. Just commitment.

And we're feeling it. Not guiltily, not to play victim but because sustainability matters. For the founders. For the artists. For the community this platform serves.
