A couple of days ago Milei tried to pass a law allowing unrestricted foreign land ownership in Argentina, opening the way for among others AI data centers in Patagonia. Big portions of the law got stopped by protest, but Milei still made it easier for indigenous people to be displaced from their lands. Catapista Julietta wrote an article about the impacts of the law, read it through links in comments.

Last week, CATAPA led 3 workshops at the Wereldkamp, a system change camp in collaboration with Broederlijk Delen that brings together people committed to working towards a just and sustainable future.

The first workshop, "The Right to Say No – Imagining a World Beyond Mining", explored the right of communities to reject mining projects and the importance of imagining alternatives to extractivism. Through a collective visioning exercise, participants reflected on what a world beyond mining could look like and discussed the values and systems needed to make such a future possible.

During the second workshop “Change it with a picture”, participants first reflected together on what justice and sustainability mean in practice and looked for examples already present at the camp. They captured these ideas through photographs and shared the stories behind them with the rest of the group. After identifying common themes, participants co-created a small exhibition, to show that a just and sustainable world is possible.

In the presentation "Your Phone Breaks Too Soon — and Why It Matters", participants learned about the link between mining, planned obsolescence and the production of e-waste through an interactive quiz. We watched together the documentary Illusion of Abundance, following the stories of 3 environmental defenders protecting their territories from mining companies, illustrating the impacts of this growing demand on communities resisting mining projects.

We are giving away tickets for Nuestra Tierra screening in Bozar Wednesday 15 July at 18h (link in bio) send us a DM and we'll pick the winners.

Nuestra Tierra is a moving account of the struggle of the Chuschagasta community against miners using brutal violence to oust them from their land. An inspiring film very close to our work.
