The Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) is pleased to invite you to an exclusive webinar on "China: Charting a Course through Turbulent Times" on Thursday, 25 June 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 CEST.

The presentation will be delivered by Ms Allison Mandra, Senior Economist at KBC Bank, who specializes in macroeconomic policy, financial market analysis and global economic developments.

The webinar will be introduced by Ms Gwenn Sonck, Executive Director of the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce.

At a time when global economic conditions are rapidly changing, this session offers a unique opportunity to gain expert perspectives on one of the world's most influential economies.

Strengthening robotic surgery cooperation between China and Flanders.
Learning from each other to accelerate innovation and improve patient outcomes.

Last May, the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC), represented by Executive Director Gwenn Sonck (宋惠安), visited Shanghai and Chengdu.
Through the Chamber’s introduction, Dr Alex Mottrie, CEO of Orsi Academy, a structural partner of the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC), travelled to both cities to explore cooperation with Borns Medical, a Chengdu-based company active in the field of robotic surgery.
In Shanghai, Dr Mottrie delivered a lecture at the International Conference at the ENT Hospital, where he presented Orsi Academy’s mission: helping surgeons perform better through advanced robotic surgery training.

In Chengdu, a city of 16 million inhabitants, Dr Alex Mottrie shared a key insight: “A fool with a tool is still a fool.” Technology alone is not enough. The real value lies in high-quality training, expertise, standardisation and international cooperation.

Both sides share the ambition to bring robotic surgery training to the next level, with a strong focus on standardisation, validated learning pathways and training outside the operating room, not directly on patients.
Orsi Academy’s Proficiency-Based Progression methodology offers an objective and quality-assured approach to surgical education, helping surgeons reach clearly defined performance benchmarks before applying their skills in clinical practice.
Discussions are also ongoing on the possible development of a joint AI Training Academy / AI Innovation Hub for Medicine in Chengdu, further combining Flemish expertise in surgical training with China’s fast-moving innovation ecosystem.

Dr Alex Mottrie also introduced the concept of micro-credentialing in robotic surgery, in line with European developments in skills recognition and lifelong learning. Standardisation is key. Through this collaboration, we can learn from each other, accelerate innovation and improve outcomes for patients.
As Dr Mottrie highlighted, China places innovation at the forefront, helping to make innovation faster and more affordable.

The existing direct flights between Chengdu and Brussels make cooperation even more accessible and further strengthen the bridge between China and Flanders.
Exciting times ahead for robotic surgery collaboration between Flanders and China.

Webinar Recap: Digital Marketing for Industrial Goods

Today, the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) hosted a webinar on Digital Marketing for Industrial Goods in China with Mr. Jonathan Kullman, Founder & CEO of NBH.

The webinar was opened by Ms. Gwenn Sonck (宋惠安), Executive Director of the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce, who underlined that having an online presence in China is not just a nice-to-have, but a must-have. Companies need a clear and long-term marketing strategy to build visibility, credibility and trust in the Chinese market.

As highlighted during the session: “Your website replaces your sales engineer in the early stages.”

For European industrial companies, China remains a critical growth market. However, succeeding in China today requires more than a strong product or global reputation. Chinese buyers increasingly rely on local digital platforms to discover, evaluate and shortlist suppliers, making a well-adapted digital strategy essential for commercial success.

💡 Key insights from the webinar:

🔹 China’s digital ecosystem is very different from Europe’s, with platforms such as Baidu, WeChat, Zhihu, Douyin, Bilibili and Chinese AI search tools playing a key role.
🔹 For B2B companies, visibility and trust are essential. If your company cannot be found online in China, you risk losing potential leads.
🔹 A China-tailored website, optimized for Baidu and supported by localized content, case studies and lead capture tools, can become an important commercial asset.
🔹 WeChat is not only a communication channel, but also a platform for content distribution, relationship building, CRM and sales support.
🔹 Trade fairs should be supported by digital activities before, during and after the event to turn offline visibility into qualified leads and long-term business opportunities.

A sincere thank you to Mr. Jonathan Kullman for sharing his practical insights and recommendations with our members.

Learning to Ride the Dragon in 2026 🇨🇳

On 5 May, the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce (FCCC) had the pleasure of welcoming members to Hotel Falligan in Ghent for an insightful session on China’s evolving role in the global economy with Philippe Snel, lawyer and founder of DaWo Law Firm Shanghai.

The event opened with remarks by Gwenn Sonck (宋惠安), Exective Director FCCC, who underlined that China offers a predictable policy environment compared to other major economies. In today’s geopolitical context, marked by uncertainty, predictability is exactly what companies need in order to plan, invest and grow sustainably. With 5% growth in the first quarter of the year,
China also remains one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world.
This was followed by an in-depth presentation by Philippe Snel on the opportunities, risks and strategic dilemmas European companies face in today’s rapidly evolving China landscape.

Drawing on nearly 25 years of experience in China and his daily legal practice in Shanghai, Philippe Snel shared practical insights into how foreign companies are reassessing their China strategies and adapting to a new reality in which China is no longer only a market, but increasingly a driver of global supply chains, innovation and industrial transformation.
One of the key takeaways of the evening was that companies can no longer afford to observe China from a distance. Businesses increasingly need to strengthen their presence in China, follow developments in real time and build long-term partnerships with Chinese stakeholders.

Particularly relevant for participants was the discussion on China’s growing leadership across industries such as EVs, shipbuilding, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, the implications this has for European companies operating globally, and how businesses increasingly need to work together with China.

A valuable and highly interactive exchange, with engaging discussions throughout the evening.

🌏 In-person Strategy Session | Learning to Ride the Dragon in 2026: How to Deal with the New Dominant China

As European companies increasingly come to terms with China’s role as a leading economic power in the 21st century, and as critical industrial supply chains are more and more directed from China, many businesses are confronted with a strategic dilemma. Should they actively engage with China and seize emerging opportunities, or rather maintain distance and consolidate their competitive position in their home markets?

This session is designed to support business leaders in navigating today’s evolving China landscape. With nearly 25 years of experience and his daily practice as a business lawyer in Shanghai, Philippe Snel will offer practical insights into the opportunities and risks for European companies, and how foreign businesses are reassessing their strategies, anticipating challenges, and defining realistic expectations in the current environment.
