A member of our association had the opportunity to acquire a full-scale replica of a Fokker F.VII/3m in the Netherlands, allowing this iconic commercial aircraft to enrich the BAPA collection.
This replica was built in 2018–2019 by volunteers from the "Stichting Nederlands Transport Museum" foundation for the television series *Vliegende Hollanders* ("Flying Dutchmen"), which chronicles the lives of Anthony Fokker—the most important Dutch aircraft manufacturer—and Albert Plesman, the founder of KLM.
After filming, the replica was displayed at the National Transport Museum in Nieuw-Vennep. As the museum was set to close, the replica was put up for auction in 2025.
The Fokker F.VII/3m is an aircraft of great importance in Belgian aviation history.
Ordered by SABENA, 28 units were built by SABCA in Brussels, it is the largest number ever manufactured under license outside the Netherlands.
Operated by SABENA starting in 1929, the aircraft enabled the inauguration of new routes across Europe. Thanks to its equipment, night airmail flights became commonplace.
Several units were shipped to the Belgian Congo to operate domestic routes. In late 1931, a reconnaissance flight assessed the feasibility of a regular air service between Belgium and the Congo.
It was not until February 1935 that the first scheduled flight took place; from that point on, the round-trip service between Belgium and the Congo operated on a fortnightly basis. Several aircraft originally belonging to Sabena were used by the Belgian Aéronautique Militaire as transport and bomber aircraft (!) until 1940.
During the Second World War, while the Fokkers based in Belgium had been destroyed, the aircraft stationed in the Congo contributed to the war effort and remained in service until 1945.
Today, only four authentic examples of the Fokker F.VII remain. Two are in Europe in the single-engine F.VII configuration: one at the Aviodrome in Lelystad, Netherlands, and the other at the Verkehrshaus Museum (Swiss Museum of Transport) in Lucerne. Two additional examples, in the tri-motor F.VII/3m configuration, are preserved in the United States and in Australia.
It was with this commercial aircraft—which established key standards for flight safety and passenger comfort—that the Fokker name gained worldwide recognition.
Acquiring this replica is significant, as it allows us to pay tribute to the pilots and passengers of a bygone era when every flight was a true adventure.
Although the replica is quite faithfully executed, it requires some work to enhance its detail and realism.
Plans are in place to replace the plywood wing skin, modify the landing gear, and upgrade the engine nacelles. The instrument panel and cabin windows also need to be rebuilt. The aircraft will then be repainted in the livery of the SABENA aircraft that completed the first air link between Belgium and the Congo in 1935.
Sponsors are being sought to fund the purchase of materials, and professionals are being called upon for specific tasks, such as the rebuilding the landing gear.
