A step closer to a cruelty-free EU 🚨

We welcome the European Commission's much anticipated Roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments. Its promise to speed-up progress in the transition to non-animal approaches must be prioritised.

Swipe to read the roadmaps commitments, which mark a serious move towards ending the suffering of animals 👉

The Roadmap identifies that eliminating redundant tests on animals from legislation, (some of which are highlighted by our Replace Animal Tests (RAT) List), as well as introducing more non-animal approaches.

We now urge strong early progress, and immediately action to lay the foundations for long-term success.

Support within the European Parliament for non-animal approaches for chemical safety assessment has been strengthened 🙌

MEPs voted by 526-56 to support proposals that would modernise the work of the chemicals regulator by ensuring non-animal approaches are prioritised. This regulation will also formalise an accredited stakeholders’ forum which is vital to maintaining engagement and transparency with experts and those who speak up for animals.

With the European Commission’s Roadmap for the phasing-out of animal testing for chemicals due to be published in May, this is at a vital time in Europe’s transition to humane, species-relevant science.

Europe is taking small but positive steps towards a cruelty-free world, but progress must be faster.

There were 9.1 million animal tests in the EU and Norway in 2023 – a meagre fall of 3% since 2022.

This World Day for Animals in Laboratories, we need a joined-up, EU‑wide approach across chemicals, consumer safety and research to truly accelerate the phase‑out of animal testing.

There were 9.1 million uses of animals in the EU and Norway in 2023 – a meagre fall of 3% since 2022.

This includes a 15% increase in the use of cats in experiments.

The ’s roadmap for the phase-out of animal testing in chemical safety assessments, due to be published next month, must bring real, lasting change.

We need ambitious plans to implement the roadmap, with concrete timelines and milestones.

European citizens want nothing less.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the EU law that’s meant to prevent the sale of all cosmetic products tested on animals, but we are not celebrating.

Despite huge public support for the ban, cruel animal tests continue to be required by European authorities, including on ingredients used in products such as make-up, shampoo, moisturiser, soap, perfume, and toothpaste.

The European Commission has replied to the open letter we coordinated to mark European Day for Human Science 2025.

The reply indicates ongoing support for the ultimate goal of phasing out animal testing but we continue to call for coordinated and urgent action.

The letter sent in September 2025, was signed by nine MEPs from across
the political spectrum, as well as 14 animal protection NGOs.

Whilst European Commission’s response has an encouraging tone and could indicate agreement on the need for a more coordinated approach, ongoing concerns remain.

The emerging Roadmap and upcoming legislation must address the longstanding inconsistencies between public opinion, political commitments and regulatory action.

A new ban on animal testing for detergents marks an important milestone and a step towards a cruelty free Europe.

Swipe for the news highlights 👉

The European Parliament confirmed the ban in January. While it does not cover the testing of detergent ingredients under general chemicals regulations, it closes loopholes that could have opened the door to new animal tests and ensures that innovation in detergents can move forward without cruelty. As the first new animal testing ban in EU chemicals legislation since 2013, it’s a clear signal that change is not only possible, but already underway.

The cruel rabbit pyrogen test is being replaced by cruelty-free cell-based methods in the EU and UK 📢

The pyrogen test checks for signs of a fever in the rabbit, to determine if medicines have been accidentally contaminated. Now it is replaced with a cruelty-free method which uses human white blood cells.
