In eastern , water-spreading weirs are helping refugees and host communities restore degraded land, improve soil moisture and grow more food throughout the year.

These simple structures capture and spread seasonal rainwater, turning land that was once difficult to farm into productive fields. The result is higher crop yields, new income opportunities and stronger food security for thousands of people.

Beyond the harvests, the project also creates jobs, supports peaceful sharing of natural resources and helps communities adapt to climate change.

Supported by the European Union through EU International Partnerships, this is a practical investment showing how access to water can help families move from aid dependency towards greater self-sufficiency.

For Afghan families returning from Pakistan, the journey home is often only the beginning.

With support from , UNHCR and partners are providing immediate assistance at points of arrival, including registration, protection screening, legal awareness, essential relief items, hot meals and emergency financial support.

This helps returnees meet urgent needs such as transport, food and shelter, while connecting them to documentation, legal assistance and specialised services where needed.

After returning to , Mujtaba used a UNHCR small-business grant delivered through partner WASSA, funded by EU International Partnerships , to start a wool-spinning business in Herat.

Today, his business provides income opportunities for ten women and a man with a disability, helping support several families and strengthen the local community.

A powerful example of how livelihood support can help returnees rebuild their futures.
