Where do you actually keep more of your €100,000 salary in Europe?

It’s not just about how much you earn — it’s about how much you keep after taxes.

Recent comparisons across Europe show a striking difference in net income from a €100,000 gross salary.

At the top of the ranking is Bulgaria, where take-home pay reaches €86,930. This makes it the only country in the list where net income exceeds 85% of gross salary.

At the other end is Belgium, where net income drops to €50,750 — meaning nearly half of the salary goes to taxes and social contributions.

This gap highlights a key reality:
📍 Choosing where you live and work can significantly impact your financial freedom.

For freelancers, remote workers, and retirees, understanding these differences is not just interesting — it can be life-changing.

We help individuals explore smarter relocation options, optimize their financial situation, and build a lifestyle that works for them.

If you’re curious about what this could look like for you, let’s talk.

Bulgaria Has Elected the 52nd National Assembly: Who Will Govern the Country?

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has officially approved the list of MPs who will take seats in the new parliament. After the tense snap elections held on April 19, 2026, the country’s political landscape has changed significantly.

What you need to know about the new parliament:

Location:
The historic building of the National Assembly in the heart of Sofia.

Composition:
The parliament consists of 240 Members of Parliament.

Parliamentary groups:
Five political forces have entered the 52nd Assembly. The biggest surprise was the victory of the new party “Progressive Bulgaria” (leader — Rumen Radev), which secured 131 seats, giving it an absolute majority. GERB-SDS, PP-DB, DPS, and “Vazrazhdane” will also be represented in the chamber.

When does it start?
The first session is expected as early as next week — on April 29 or 30. By tradition, it is convened by the president (in this case, acting president Iliana Yotova).

What is the power of parliament?
Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic. This means the National Assembly is the highest authority. MPs do more than just pass laws — they:

Elect the government: This is where the Prime Minister is decided.
Control the budget: They determine how citizens’ taxes are spent.
Ratify international treaties: They shape the country’s position on the global stage.

💼 Doing Business in Bulgaria: How Not to Disrupt Your Plans in April–May 2026

If you're planning a business trip, a residence permit application, or important meetings in Bulgaria this spring, be prepared for a “holiday marathon.”

During this period, the country shifts into a slower pace of life — and scheduling meetings on or around public holidays can seriously affect your timelines.

⚠️ Key “red zones” for business activity:

📍 April 10–13: Orthodox Easter
From Friday through Monday, business activity largely comes to a halt. On Thursday (April 9), many people leave work early, and on Tuesday (April 14), things resume slowly.
❗️Tip: Avoid scheduling anything critical during these dates.

📍 May 1 (Friday): Labour Day
A classic long weekend — expect the country to be in holiday mode until Monday.

📍 May 6 (Wednesday): St. George’s Day
Falling midweek, this holiday often turns into a full week off, as many people take additional leave.
❗️Tip: Confirm meetings well in advance — your counterpart may be unavailable.

📍 May 24–25: Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture
Since May 24 falls on a Sunday, Monday (May 25) will be an official day off.

💡 4 practical rules for international visitors:

1. Forget “urgent deadlines.” Between May 1–10, public institutions and legal offices operate at reduced capacity. If your plans involve notary services or registry documents, finalize them before the end of April.

2. The “Empty Sofia” effect. During holidays, the capital clears out — many people travel abroad or within the country. Always confirm your partner’s availability and location.

3. Logistics can be challenging. Traffic leaving Sofia becomes extremely heavy on pre-holiday evenings. Avoid planning intercity transfers at these times.

4. Restaurants for meetings. Popular venues are often fully booked. Reserve tables at least 3–4 days in advance.

❗️Summary: The most productive business windows are April 15–30 and May 11–22.

Thinking about buying property in Bulgaria? Here’s what you need to know before choosing a new-build 👇

Buying a newly built apartment in Bulgaria can be a great opportunity — modern homes, better prices at early stages, and flexible payment plans. But the process is different from what many people expect.

In Bulgaria, construction follows specific legal stages:

🏗 **Act 14** – the building structure is completed
🏗 **Act 15** – construction is finished, ready for inspection
🏗 **Act 16** – the property is fully approved and legally habitable

👉 Important: You can buy before Act 16 — but you may not be able to live in the property yet.

💡 **Why people choose new-builds:**
✔ Lower prices (especially early stage)
✔ Modern standards and energy efficiency
✔ Flexible payment schedules
✔ Possibility to customize interiors

⚠️ **What to watch out for:**
– Construction delays
– Developer reliability
– Additional finishing costs
– Waiting time for Act 16

This is where many buyers make costly mistakes — not understanding the stage they are buying into.

👉 That’s exactly why **FreeLanceMove** exists.

We assist you at every step:
• Selecting reliable developers
• Explaining legal stages (Act 14, 15, 16) in plain language
• Reviewing contracts
• Supporting the full purchase process — from first visit to final ownership

No guesswork. No surprises. Just a clear path to your property in Bulgaria.

Freedom is not about working from a beach for Instagram.
It’s about having the ability to design a life that actually works for you.

Remote work was supposed to bring freedom.

But for many freelancers and independent professionals, the reality looks different:

• high cost of living
• complicated bureaucracy
• the feeling that freedom comes at a premium

We believe it shouldn’t be that way.
Freelancers relocating to Bulgaria often reduce their cost of living by 40–60%.

Bulgaria offers something many remote professionals are looking for:

✔ a low and fair tax system
✔ lower everyday expenses
✔ access to the EU
✔ nature, space, and a slower pace of life

Yet surprisingly few freelancers know it’s an option — and even fewer understand how to make the move.

That’s why FreeLanceMove exists.
We help independent professionals relocate to Bulgaria with clear guidance on legal, tax, and relocation processes — and with a community of people making the same move.

🌸 **March 1st: A Beautiful Bulgarian Tradition – Baba Marta**

Did you know that in Bulgaria, **March 1st symbolically marks the arrival of spring** through a centuries-old tradition called *Baba Marta* (“Grandmother March”)?

According to folklore, Baba Marta is a moody old lady who controls the weather in March. When she is in a good mood, the sun shines and spring arrives quickly. When she is upset… winter might return for a while.

To welcome spring and bring good luck, people give each other a **martenitsa** – a small bracelet or ornament made of red and white threads.

🔴 **Red** symbolizes life, health, and energy.
⚪ **White** represents purity and new beginnings.

People wear the martenitsa until they see **the first sign of spring** – usually a stork, a swallow, or a blossoming tree. Then they hang it on a tree branch, symbolically giving their wishes for health and luck back to nature.

It’s a simple but meaningful tradition that reminds us to wish **health, happiness, and renewal** to the people around us.

At **FreeLanceMove**, we enjoy sharing traditions and cultures that connect different parts of Europe. Behind mobility, relocation, and professional opportunities, there are always **rich cultures and human stories** worth discovering.

🌱 **Happy Baba Marta!**

Thinking about retirement abroad?

Bulgaria is increasingly attractive for retirees from France, Belgium, and other Western European countries — and for good reasons.

✔ In many cases, foreign pensions are not taxed in Bulgaria (depending on your situation and tax residency).
✔ The cost of living is up to 3 times lower than in countries like France or Belgium.

This means one important thing:
with the same pension, you can afford a significantly higher quality of life — better housing, more comfort, fewer financial worries.

Of course, relocation is not just about costs.
Residence permits, healthcare access, registration, and daily administration matter just as much.

At FreeLanceMove, we help retirees understand whether Bulgaria truly fits their personal situation — legally, financially, and practically.
