What conditions need to be in place before AI can be responsibly adopted in public administration?

One key finding from our work with the Office des étrangers / Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken: AI is not a standalone solution.

Through the EU-funded Technical Support Instrument (TSI), IOM, in cooperation with the European Commission's SG REFORM, supported the Immigration Office in exploring the foundations needed for potential future AI adoption within the digital eMigration environment in a responsible, secure and accountable manner.

The assessment showed that the feasibility of AI adoption depends on strong data governance, system integration and the maturity of the wider digital environment. Success requires not only technology, but also clear organizational accountability and institutional control over how information is accessed, shared and processed across systems.

The project provided the Immigration Office with an architectural exploration, a technical assessment and an implementation framework to support future reflection and informed decision-making as digital transformation efforts continue under the eMigration programme and the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

🏠 🤝 Strengthening collaboration to improve access to sustainable housing.

Two weeks ago, housing, reception and integration professionals came together in Charleroi and Tournai for expert exchanges focused on improving access to housing for beneficiaries of international protection as part of our PATHS project.

Through panel discussions and thematic workshops, participants explored key challenges and solutions, including mobilising the private rental market, supporting cohabitation initiatives, and strengthening trust between social workers, landlords and associations.

Both meetings highlighted a key message: stronger cooperation and the sharing of good practices are essential to developing lasting housing solutions for people looking to rebuild their futures.

Last week, IOM organized an insightful field visit to Jordan and Egypt for its Institutional Donor Advisory Group, bringing together donor representatives from several member countries, including Belgium. 🇯🇴 🇪🇬

From migrant health and climate resilience initiatives in Jordan to migration governance and protection programmes in Egypt, representatives from the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the UN & other International Organizations in Geneva, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium (Diplomatie.Belgium) and Fedasil gained firsthand insights into how IOM's route-based approach supports people on the move. The visit highlighted how migration intersects with humanitarian, development and climate challenges.

One message stood out throughout: migration does not happen in isolation, and neither should our responses. Strong partnerships and flexible funding remain essential to supporting people on the move with dignity and effectiveness.

On World Homeless Day, we highlight the importance of prevention.

For people granted international protection, the transition from reception centres to independent housing can be one of the most vulnerable moments in their integration journey. Without appropriate support to find housing, the risk of homelessness is real.

Preventing homelessness is not the responsibility of one actor alone. It starts with access to information, guidance, housing opportunities and the right support at the right time.

Through PATHS, IOM works together with Fedasil, ORBIT vzw and many local partner organisations to connect refugees with landlords and real estate actors, supporting sustainable housing solutions for everyone.

1️⃣ What role can the African diaspora play in shaping the future of Africa–Europe cooperation? As part of AU-EU Youth Voices Lab - Power of the Collective, Restless Development is conducting “Voices from the Margins: Young Africans in the European Diaspora,” a participatory study on the experiences and aspirations of African diaspora communities in the EU. The questionnaire is anonymous and available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, with the option to volunteer for an in-depth interview.

3️⃣ MashaaDunya is a multidisciplinary festival held across Brussels, celebrating the cultural crossings born from migration between Moroccan, Turkish, Congolese and Belgian cultures. Its programme of films, concerts and exhibitions includes MABABU – The Spirit of the Ancestors, Pamela Tulizo’s photo series on African women whose resistance to slavery and colonialism was often erased, Bnat Al Ghorba, Empact’s portraits of 60 women from the Moroccan and Turkish diaspora, and Racines partagées, showcasing 12 emerging Brussels artists.

4️⃣ Empact presents a free exhibition honouring three generations of women with a migration background, mainly from the Moroccan and Turkish diaspora, and the Belgian women who walked alongside them. Through portraits and testimonies, it tells stories of uprooting and struggle, but also of building a life and a place in Belgian society. A debate with women featured in the project takes place on 23 October.

5️⃣ Through the Koning Boudewijnstichting, the Fonds Elisabeth & Amélie offers scholarships to students from the Global South enrolled in a master’s-level programme in Belgium. The grant funds a one- to two-month field internship in a Global South country, as part of a master’s thesis or project on sustainable water management. The fund promotes an approach combining technical and social perspectives. Around ten scholarships are awarded each year, for internships between January and August 2027.

✨ Incentive Fund 2026: meet the 4 initiatives selected for the second semester!

We're happy to introduce the four organizations selected for the second semester of the 2026 Incentive Fund, part of IOM's Conex project.

Working in communities across Belgium, these initiatives reach migrants in precarious administrative situations, especially those living outside the formal reception network. Their local, targeted work helps people access their rights, reliable information and the support they need.

💡 Each initiative strengthens protection-based information and guidance, so that migrants can make informed decisions about their future. Voluntary return and reintegration is presented as one option among a wider range of protection pathways.

A big thank you to every organization that applied. Your strong engagement shows, once again, how vital community-based protection work is across Belgium.

💬“Het is bijna onmogelijk om binnen twee maanden iets te vinden en te verhuizen.”

Wanneer een bewoner van een opvangcentrum erkend wordt als vluchteling, begint meteen de zoektocht naar een woning. Als sociaal assistente in een Fedasil -opvangcentrum begeleidt Nurhak bewoners tijdens die cruciale en heel uitdagende fase.

In deze getuigenis vertelt ze over de uitdagingen waarmee de bewoners worden geconfronteerd: een zeer korte termijn om te zoeken naar een woning, taalbarrières en terughoudendheid bij verhuurders. Met persoonlijke begeleiding en duidelijke informatie probeert ze vertrouwen te creëren en bewoners sterker te ondersteunen in hun zoektocht naar een nieuwe thuis.

💬 « Trouver un logement et déménager en deux mois, c’est presque impossible. »

Lorsqu'un résident d'un centre d'accueil est reconnu comme réfugié, la recherche d’un logement commence immédiatement. Assistante sociale dans un centre d’accueil de Fedasil, Nurhak accompagne les résidents dans cette étape cruciale et pleine de défis.

Dans ce témoignage, elle évoque les obstacles auxquels les résidents sont confrontés : un délai très court pour trouver du logement, la barrière de la langue et les hésitations de certains propriétaires. Grâce à un accompagnement personnalisé et à des informations claires, elle cherche à instaurer un climat de confiance et à mieux soutenir les résidents dans leurs démarches.
