💙 A milestone week for EMPASS in Brussels!

Last week, the EMPASS consortium came together in person for our final consortium meeting on 13 October, followed by the final project event on 14 October.

Two days to reflect on how far we’ve come, share the results and experiences of the project, and bring together partners and stakeholders around the work and impact of EMPASS.

A huge thank you to all our partners, speakers and participants who contributed to these important moments and, above all, to the EMPASS journey. 🤝

“Talent is everywhere in Europe, opportunity is not.”

That is how Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament, opened JA Europe’s forum From Skills to Opportunity yesterday, in Brussels and online.

Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, put the same challenge in terms of competitiveness:

“Competitiveness is not just about having the right skills; it is also about giving people the chance to put those skills to work.”

Two video addresses, one message: Europe’s competitiveness depends on connecting young people’s skills with real opportunities.

🏆 Celebrating the educators who turn young people's dreams into reality!

Behind every young entrepreneur, every innovative idea and every new opportunity is often a teacher who believed in their potential.

At JA Europe's From Skills to Opportunity event in Brussels, we were proud to celebrate Giuseppe Bucca, teacher at Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Ettore Majorana, as the recipient of the JA Europe Teacher Award, powered by UPS.

💬 “In these 10 years, I have seen many business plans, many prototypes and listened to many pitches, but most of all I've seen my students and colleagues turn dreams into reality. Maybe this award is one of those dreams too.” — Giuseppe Bucca

Presenting the award, Chelsea Allison, VP of Human Resources at UPS EMEA, reflected on the lasting influence of educators:

💬 “A great teacher does far more than deliver lessons. They help students find confidence when they doubt themselves, and they encourage curiosity when the answer isn't obvious. At UPS, we believe that economic opportunity begins with education.”

✨ Teachers do more than prepare young people for the future. They help them imagine what that future could look like, and give them the confidence and skills to pursue it.

🧭 From Engagement to Impact: Scaling JA Compass Through EU Funding, Business Partnerships and Youth Uptake

What would it take to grow JA Compass from 10,000 young people to one million across Europe?

At JA Europe's From Skills to Opportunity event in Brussels, the second JA Compass session explored how EU funding, business partnerships and youth engagement can help turn innovative digital learning into lasting impact.

Moderated by Joanna Andrzejewska, Head of Programmes at JA Europe, the panel brought together perspectives on what it takes to make educational innovation inclusive, engaging and sustainable:

🔹 Manel Sanchez, Director of the European Youth Card Association (EYCA), highlighted the importance of involving young people in shaping their own learning experiences:
💬 “The more ownership young people have on the tool, the more young people will be engaged.”

🔹 Per Strömbäck, Managing Director of Swedish Games Industry, brought the gaming sector's perspective on creating engaging digital experiences that encourage participation and learning.

🔹 Juan Simoes Iglesias, YMCA Europe, emphasised the importance of balancing digital and human skills, keeping the individual at the centre of learning and development.

🔹 Ivana Davidovska, Head of Projects at Disability Support Europe, reinforced the need to make innovation accessible to everyone:
💬 “Our vision is a world built for everyone.”

🔹 Tomas Moška, Co-Founder of Turing College, highlighted the importance of empowering individuals to drive their own creativity and learning.

🎮 Through JA Compass, developed as part of the EU-funded Game4Change project, we're exploring how gamified learning can help young people develop entrepreneurial mindsets and future-ready skills.

✨ The message was clear: scaling impact is not just about reaching more young people, but ensuring that learning is inclusive, meaningful and shaped by the young people themselves.

By bringing together education, industry and youth organisations, we can create stronger pathways from engagement to opportunity.

🎨 From Evidence to Action: Implementing Skills Recognition in CCSI
How can we ensure that creative skills are not only developed, but also recognised and valued?

At JA Europe's From Skills to Opportunity event in Brussels, the EU co-funded Cultural Bees Eu project brought together education leaders, local policymakers and creative sector experts to explore how to translate project findings into practical approaches to skills recognition.

💬 “The programme showed that when young people are given the right tools, creativity multiplies.”
Dr ANTIGONI KOMODIKI, CEO of JA Cyprus, moderated the discussion, highlighting the importance of equipping young people with the tools and confidence to pursue creative opportunities.

The panel brought together complementary perspectives:

🔹 Dilyana Gyurova, Junior Achievement Bulgaria, shared the perspective of implementing entrepreneurship education and nurturing young people's creative potential.

🔹 Francesca Mazzieri, Junior Achievement Italia, explored how education can help young people develop and demonstrate entrepreneurial and creative skills.

🔹 Matteo Luigi Bianchi, ANCI Lombardia, highlighted the importance of local authorities:
💬 “Municipalities play a crucial role in connecting young people, education and local creative ecosystems.”

🔹 Paolo Montemurro, Materahub, brought insights from the cultural and creative sectors on translating project findings into practical approaches to skills recognition.

✨ The takeaway? Recognising creative talent requires collaboration between education, policymakers, local communities and the creative industries.

Through Cultural BEES, we're working to turn that collaboration into meaningful opportunities for Europe's next generation of creative entrepreneurs.

💻 More technology doesn't always mean better learning. So what does?

At JA Europe's From Skills to Opportunity event in Brussels, our Beyond Screen Time panel explored how digital education can truly empower young people.

💬 "The question is not about getting more digital, but getting better at digital in education." — Adrian Duşa, European Commission, DG EAC

But what does that look like in the classroom?

As Giuseppe Bucca, teacher at Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Ettore Majorana, highlighted, learning becomes more meaningful when students actively participate, make decisions and solve real-world problems using technology.

And meaningful learning also means rethinking how we measure success.

💬 "We need to look at the starting point of every individual and see throughout the process how much they grow, rather than what score they get." — Brikena Xhomaqi, Lifelong Learning Platform

Moderated by Irina Ilieva from JA Europe, the discussion reminded us that making mistakes, experimenting and learning through experience are all essential parts of education.

✨ The future of digital learning isn't about more screen time. It's about more meaningful learning, creativity and opportunities for every young person to grow.

🌍 How can we turn skills into real opportunities for young people across Europe?

That’s the question bringing policymakers, educators and employers together today in Brussels at JA Europe’s From Skills to Opportunity event!

Opening the day, JA Europe CEO Salvatore Nigro reminded us: “We need to make sure we recognize young people’s talent.”

And as European Parliament Vice-President Victor Negrescu emphasised, giving every young European a fair chance to succeed is essential to building a more competitive and resilient Europe.

The conversation continued with our EmPass flagship panel, exploring how we can better develop, demonstrate and recognise the skills people need.

💬 Mario Nava, European Commission, highlighted that skills are both a human issue and a question of competitiveness.

💬 Minna Melleri, World Employment Confederation, stressed the growing importance of soft skills alongside digital and AI competencies.

💬 Giulia Meschino, EVTA, pointed to the potential of microcredentials to bridge the gap between developing skills and demonstrating them.

💬 Jasper Van Loo, Cedefop, reminded us that employers increasingly value the ability to adapt and develop new skills.

Moderated by Diana Filip, Deputy CEO & Chief Development Officer at JA Europe, the discussion reinforced a shared message: developing skills is only the beginning. We must also make them visible, recognised and valued.

Through the EU-funded EmPass project, we're working to make that vision a reality, creating stronger connections between education and employment.
