How can teachers help shape the future of AI in education?

We are launching our new series, AI and Education: National Union Practices, showcasing how education unions across Europe are responding to the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence.

Our first article features the Icelandic Teachers' Union (KI), which has placed teachers at the centre of a national AI pilot project involving around 600 educators. By combining professional development, classroom experimentation, and policy development, the initiative demonstrates how teachers can actively shape the use of AI in schools while safeguarding professional autonomy, educational quality, and democratic values.

How can AI in education be shaped by educators rather than commercial interests?

ETUCE is looking for real-life examples of educator-led AI practices that support teaching and learning, reflect educational values, and respond to the needs of teachers and students.

Are you a teacher, education support personnel, academic or researcher using AI in innovative ways? Share your experience and help build a European database of good practices on AI in education.

Selected contributions will be featured on the ETUCE website, and the four most relevant examples will be invited to present their work at the European Conference on AI and Education in Lisbon (25-26 November 2026).

minzaTeachers deserve a real voice in shaping the future of education.

Today, ETUCE Director Jelmer Evers met with European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu to discuss the upcoming EU Teachers Agenda and the action needed to make the teaching profession more attractive across Europe.

During the meeting, ETUCE highlighted key priorities including stronger professional autonomy, better salaries and working conditions, meaningful social dialogue with teacher unions, quality teacher education, and increased investment in public education.

Europe cannot solve teacher shortages without involving teachers in the decisions that affect their profession.

How can Europe attract and retain the researchers it needs for the future?

At the European Commission's Implementation Dialogue on Attracting and Retaining Research Talent in Europe, ETUCE stressed that Europe cannot become a destination of choice for researchers without secure jobs, decent working conditions, academic freedom and meaningful social dialogue.

Representing ETUCE, European Director Jelmer Evers called for stronger involvement of researchers' trade unions in the implementation of European research policies and highlighted the need to tackle precarious employment, short-term contracts and insecure career pathways. ETUCE also called for social dialogue to become a requirement for institutions benefitting from EU research funding.
