ADRA Slovenija shares:🐝 WHY do we focus on BEES in our projects?

When we think of bees, we often think of honey first. Yet their greatest contribution remains almost invisible to the eye: pollination, on which numerous plants, a diverse diet, and functioning ecosystems depend.

🌼 According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), more than three-quarters of the world’s food crop species are at least partly dependent on pollinators, while more than 80 percent of flowering plant species are linked to animal pollination. These include not only honeybees, but also wild bees, butterflies, and many other animals.

Without bees and other pollinators, many ecosystems would be at risk, the diversity of plant and animal species would decline, and consequently the food security of billions of people would also be threatened.

🌿 By protecting pollinators, we are therefore also protecting fruit, vegetables, seeds, and the future of our food. Preserved habitats, a diversity of flowering plants, and responsible environmental practices are essential for their survival.

🇸🇮 In Slovenia, people are well aware of the extraordinary role of bees, which is why beekeeping is deeply rooted in Slovenian tradition. Throughout history, Slovenians have also shared their extensive knowledge of the lives and work of these industrious insects with the wider world. Slovenia lives and breathes with bees, so it is no surprise that the idea of World Bee Day was born here.

🇿🇲 It is precisely this connection between nature and people’s lives that we highlight in ADRA Slovenia’s project in Zambia. Women beekeepers in the Nyamphande community are gaining knowledge about the sustainable care of bee colonies. By growing seedlings and planting nectar-rich plants, they are also improving conditions for bees.

💛 When families earn an income from beekeeping, environmental conservation also takes on a direct meaning for their livelihoods. Caring for nature becomes part of everyday work and planning for the future.

🐝 The small bee reminds us of how closely connected we are to nature.

We are wishing all children and teachers a good and inspiring schoolyear ahead. On this International Day to Protect Education from Attack, we join the EU in reaffirming that every child has the right to learn safely, in crisis and in calm.
In many emergencies, ADRA and our partners have kept classrooms running for thousands of children, because there shouldn't be a pause button to education. Education is also about protection, childhood, stability, and a pathway forward, even in the hardest moments.

✏️📚 For many, September means back to school. But in conflict zones, schools face attacks, putting children’s futures at risk.

On this International Day to , the EU reaffirms its commitment to protecting education & helping children learn safely.

Together with our partners, we help keep education going when children need it most.

Responding fast to a disaster needs a plan, and the entire team being trained how to activate it. Today, the ADRA Europe Regional Office, ADRA International and ADRA Asia Regional Office supported ADRA Germany in the design and delivery of "Exercise Open Doors", a full-day tabletop simulation exercise designed to put its new National Emergency Management Plan (NEMP) into practice.

Working in two response teams, participants faced a major flood affecting a fictitious German city. As the situation evolved, teams had to make real-time decisions about activating ADRA’s response systems, working with local government and partner agencies, and supporting the local church to assess whether church buildings could safely be opened as temporary shelters.

The exercise tested much more than plans on paper. Teams worked through changing information, competing priorities and increasing community needs, while considering staffing, logistics, communications, safeguarding, coordination and the practical realities of running a shelter.

As the simulation scenario escalated, teams were also challenged to think beyond the first hours of response: when and how to scale up, where partnerships could strengthen the response, and when ADRA should begin transitioning toward handover and longer-term recovery.

Most importantly, "Exercise Open Doors" kept the focus where it belongs: on affected people and communities, and on ensuring that our plans, partnerships and systems are ready when they are needed most.

Gabriel Villarreal, Emergency Coordinator at ADRA Europe says:" I am glad to have participated in this Tabletop Exercise as Regional Emergency Coordinator. The exercise successfully tested ADRA Germany’s National Emergency Management Plan (NEMP) and provided both Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) with a valuable opportunity to develop their roles based on community needs, available funding, volunteers, and the approved response framework. I would like to congratulate ADRA Germany on this initiative and express my sincere gratitude to the ADRA Asia Regional Office and ADRA International for their kind support."
