This World Octopus Day, pressure is growing on the EU to stop octopus farming.

European Commissioner Costa Kadis has received letters from 35 Members of European Parliament, and over 160 NGOs and scientists, from across all corners of Europe.

In France and the Netherlands, our petitions are being handed in to policymakers.

We have unveiled an octopus mural in Paris,

and next week, Italy will launch proposals for legislation to ban on octopus farming nationally.

Octopuses are intelligent, curious and naturally solitary animals.

But right now, seafood companies across the world are racing to farm thousands of them in crowded, barren tanks – all for the sake of private profits.

Our victory against Nueva Pescanova’s farm in Gran Canaria shows that resistance is working.

🐙 The fight against octopus farming isn’t over.

The science is clear: octopuses can feel pain, learn, remember, and solve problems. This solitary wild species is completely unsuited to a life in captivity.

But seafood companies want to farm them in barren tanks on land - just to serve luxury markets and private profits. That’s why we need a ban, now, to stop this cruel and unsustainable industry in its tracks.

Last weekend, we mobilised in four cities with one message for Irish Ferries: it must stop the cruel live exports trade.

Animals are not cargo, and these gruelling sea journeys from Ireland to France cause immense suffering. There are vulnerable, unweaned calves on board these ships, who are just weeks old. Irish Ferries is breaking EU animal welfare laws by not feeding them for over 18 hours.

Irish Ferries are the only company still transporting live farmed animals on this route, and they must stop.

📢 Today, we were united with one clear message for the European Commission: It's Time.

It's time to listen to your citizens.
It's time to deliver what you promised.
It's time for a clear, ambitious timeline to ban cages for all farmed animals.

Alongside animal advocates and farmers, we stood in front of the Commission building in Brussels to mark a major milestone in our campaign.

The Commission promised to start rolling out proposals to phase out cages this autumn.

On World Cage-Free Day in March, we kicked off the seven-month countdown. And now, the deadline's here.

Carnivorous aquaculture eats up the ocean and threatens food security – its expansion must be stopped.

This is the clear conclusion we reached today as together with Foodrise we gathered policymakers, experts and campaigners at the European Parliament to discuss the true impacts and the hidden costs of farming carnivorous fish.

Hosted by French MEP Fourreau as part of Ocean Week, we dived into the real-life consequences that farming carnivorous species has on fish welfare, marine ecosystems, and global food security.

The good news is that another way is possible: it involves promoting species that require little or no feed, improving fish welfare rules and stopping the expansion of carnivorous aquaculture.

This International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we're putting the spotlight on the wasteful and inefficient way we produce food.

For every 100 calories of grain fed to animals, only 3-25 calories of meat are produced.

This wastes food and land and damages ecosystems. But if the land used to produce grain for animals was instead used to provide food for people, we could feed another two billion people every year.

We must move away from intensive factory farming and towards a kinder and more efficient way of producing food.

That's why we're calling on the European Commission to transform food production and support sustainable diets.

What if producing your sushi roll meant taking food from other people's plates?

Every year, millions of wild fish are caught to feed carnivorous species farmed in underwater cages.

This is not only bad for farmed fish, like tunas, it also has terrible consequences for marine ecosystems, wild fish, and the communities that rely on them for food and livelihoods.
