* Een artistieke werkplek (met open coworkspace, atelier, medialab, repetitieruimte) waar kunstenaars hun werk ontwikkelen.

* Het faciliteren van kenni

On May 2nd, the (new!) gate opened.

An open house after a year of renovating the back of the building, open studios with new work by Hamada Elkept, Hussein Shamia, Ismail Matar, Pavel Tikhomirov, Habib Saher, WeeW & Tatiana Zubieta, and a toast to the new bricks with music by Nazanin Yalda.

At Globe Aroma, renovation is about more than bricks. We are building a place where art, encounter and a collective design process come together.

Welcome to the house for collective imagination.

HOW TO BUILD A DOOR WITH AND FOR OUR COMMUNITY?

EN 🚪
With The House for Collective Imagination, Globe Aroma is building a permanent place where organisations, artists and people on the move meet, collaborate and create. Through a collective design process, we shape this shared infrastructure together, so that it is accessible and usable. During the collective imagination session ‘What’s a door?’, the community explored which doors invite and which exclude, in order to collectively design (and build!) a new front door for Globe Aroma.

“How does a door look like that is welcoming for people that usually experience closed doors in the city, while protecting them from hostile environments caused by police raids or violent visitors? A door that doesn’t replicate references to carceral architectures that are all too often part of the migration system like fences and surveillance cameras? And lastly, how can that door translate the artistic identity of the many artists and creatives using the space, as opposed to an institutional building with anonymous facades?”

With co-designers: .buyuktasci (Selin Buyuktasci), (Habib Saher), (Fareed Aziz) , Shilemeza Prins, (Tatiana Zubieta Cordoba), (Chloé de Salins from Studio Campus architects)

With co-builders: (Ibrahima Sory Sylla), Tatiana Zubieta Cordoba, Shilemeza Prins, Selin Buyuktasci, Pepijn Kennis, .parade (Benjamin Fernandez, Christophe Wullus, Anton Cauvain),

With Globe Aroma’s team: (An Vandermeulen), (Pepijn Kennis), (Heleen Verheyden), and (Amina Sâadi)

And many others who were engaged in conversations and explorative drawings.

At Globe Aroma, renovation is about more than bricks. The process itself is a shared inquiry: how do we make and use space? From the door to the toilet, from the reception to the kitchen: each element is rethought, as collectively as possible. We are not only building a house, but ways of living together. A house for collective imagination.

NL 🧱

WE FINISHED THE BACK OF THE HOUSE, AND IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING!

(NL + FR below)
In 2025, we celebrated the purchase of our building, and so the house on Moutstraat became a permanent place where organisations, artists and people on the move meet, collaborate and create. A year later, the first phase of the renovation is complete, and the dust has (almost!) settled.

On 2 May, we’re gently opening the (new!) gate. Come and see what is already there, and imagine what is still to come.

ꜱᴇᴀ ɪꜱ ꜰᴏʀ ꜱᴛᴏʀɪᴇꜱ, ᴛᴇᴀ ɪꜱ ꜰᴏʀ ᴛᴇʟʟɪɴɢ

A little pre-winter-break taste ✨ Some images from our yearly festival about storytelling, which took place from 2–6 December at Kaaistudios () and Globe Aroma.

We kicked off on Tuesday with 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, where we reimagined hospitality through a speculative writing session. On Wednesday, we continued with 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮, 𝗪𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲! — a festive and informal afternoon to look back on and celebrate the 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘠𝘰𝘶(𝘵𝘩) project, while imagining what comes next. Thursday opened with 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀, featuring the session 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘞𝘢𝘳 𝘡𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴. This was followed by a behind-the-door conversation on the future of the 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘼𝙡𝙡 project, and ended at Globe Aroma with a 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 — soft stories, shared food, and intimate conversations between artists and visitors. Friday was all about theatre, with the reflection session 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, followed by 𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁 in the evening: two works-in-progress and an on-stage conversation between artists and the audience. On Saturday, we closed with 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, a moment to imagine, read, practice, and experiment together while exploring border-transcending ways of living and organising.

🫶🏻Thank you to everyone who made this program possible and to all who joined us and shared this time together. And special thanks to Navid Fayaz .fayyaz for capturing these moments through his lens.

Thinking Beyond Borders: a collective learning and making programme that reflects on what becomes possible when we dare to think beyond borders: geographical, legal, institutional, but also emotional and imaginary. We aim to examine not only what a border does, but especially what lies beyond it: practices of care, imagination, autonomy and abolitionist future-making.

With Thinking Beyond Borders, we want to create a space for people who work within and across movements (artists, thinkers, activists, students, researchers, and many others) to read, practise and experiment together as we explore border-transcending ways of living and organising.
