Festival ARTONOV

Festival ARTONOV The ARTONOV interdisciplinary Festival is inspired by the international movement of Art Nouveau October, a month with a somewhat bad reputation.

The ARTONOV Festival is inspired by the international movement of Art Nouveau, both for its philosophy as for its implementation. Its objective is to generate a convergence between the performing arts, such as music, dance, theater and visual arts, promoting interdisciplinarity. Its seventh edition will take place in Brussels from 3rd to 12th October 2025. The name ‘ARTONOV’ is a pun which defines

the vision of the festival. With an Eastern European consonance, it invites us to travel through Art Nouveau by the establishment of a bridge between the centuries and the arts, where innovation becomes a way to build a future together. It revolves around the following:

• ART: convergence of the arts, providing a coherent dialogue without falling in an amalgam.

• O: the festival itself, the bridge that brings visual arts, performing arts, space arts, fine arts and the arts of music together for a complete and balanced symbiosis around Art Nouveau .

• NOV : young emerging artists as a force to invest in the future, united with the use of new technologies as well as with the opportunity to travel the road of European Art Nouveau cities. The days get shorter, the winter arrives and an insidious trend of withdrawal is in the air. It's time to throw open the windows, to leave one's home and feel the pulse of the city of Brussels. Rediscover the Art Nouveau buildings by attending a concert, a performance or show. Imagine the inside of the finest houses or hotels of great masters in Brussels reinvested by recognized and emerging artists. Music, dance, theater and visual arts in the heart of our heritage and accessible to all. What if we dreamed together, having in mind a piece of Mahler, Klimt or Zweig? Far from dwelling on the past, ARTONOV Festival offers an unprecedented look into the vision of Total Art. The ARTONOV Festival wants to offer to the artists and in priority to emerging artists, the opportunity to develop their artistic projects in a spirit of cooperation between generations, nationalities and artistic disciplines. It will also mobilize some of the artists to raise awareness, generate curiosity and the desire to learn with respect to careers in arts and performance through workshops. Finally, it proposes to reinvest Art Nouveau locations (already open to the public or private) in order to give a particular color to all the works presented as well to give a marvelous artistic challenge to the creative teams. The architecture becomes part of the "ritual" performance and an essential aspect, too often set aside. Going to venues such as the Hotel Ciamberlani, the Bibliothèque Solvay and the Hotel Wielemans will give tothe public the opportunity to discover or rediscover a heritage little or not accessible during the year and will bring back these buildings to their original inspirations and splendour

‘The past is not what precedes the present, but what becomes significant in the present’.

These words, inspired by Luciano Berio, aptly express what drove the 11th edition of the ARTONOV Festival. Berio, a visionary composer, saw memory not as something to be preserved, but as a force to be transformed, to be made to vibrate in the present, to better map out the future.

'The Future of the Past' is an invitation to ‘cross over’: a dialogue between eras, forms and artistic disciplines, where legacies are reinvented in new ways. This edition welcomed a new generation of artists - curious, audacious, hybrid - who refuse existing categories, who strive to find new ways of expression.

TARAB is a participatory piece for 6 dancers, 1 live-act composer and 100 ‘accomplices’.
Choreographer Eric Minh Cuong Castaing invites us to a participatory celebration, under the guidance of artists from the countries of the Levant.

He invites musician Rayess Bek and six dancers from the Palestinian, Lebanese and Egyptian diasporas, invoking the lively rhythms and dances of the Levant. For several hours, amateur dancers will rub shoulders with the professionals on stage, guided by choreographic protocols.
The dabke, a folk dance from the Levant, will take pride of place, in a game of transmission and shared joy.

Co-presented by Charleroi danse & Festival ARTONOV

Collaborating choreographers:

Nadim Bahsoun, Rima Baransi, Marah Haj, Aly Khamees, Ashtar Muallem, Nancy Naser Al Deen, Mohand Qader, Mohanad Smama

This creation is an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people, victims of genocide.

Discover the unique world of Franz Berwald, composer and orthopedic doctor, whose Septet for bassoon, clarinet, flute, horn, string trio and double bass, performed on period instruments, reveals the rich sound palette of the 19th century. Three themed concerts will highlight his connections with various European traditions.

The ARTONOV Festival places this cycle within an ambitious chamber music project devoted to the Classical and Romantic repertoire (1780–1850), performed on historical instruments. Under the artistic direction of Alessandro Moccia, renowned violinist and concertmaster of the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, the initiative brings together young professionals from European conservatories and established musicians. It reflects the Festival’s values: transmission, artistic excellence, and historical research.

Mute Dialogues was born of the mutual listening and silence shared by two artists, partners on stage as in life. The project is inspired by an ancient Japanese idea: mokkei, tacit agreement. A form of immediate communication without words, or even intentions.

Mute dialogues explores pure and refined musical forms, between minimalism, ambient and the contemplative environmental music of Japan in the 80s. Casimir Liberski’s piano becomes space, breath, interval. The electronics, created in real time by Shoko Igarashi using rare instruments (Tenori-on, Buchla, Hikari Instruments) as well as saxophones and flutes, act as a granular, spectral, organic counterpoint.

In the unique acoustics of the Espace Constantin Chariot, each sound travels and dissolves in over six seconds of natural reverberation, as if the music itself continued to exist beyond its performers.

With Loïe Fuller: Research, choreographer Ola Maciejewska offers a new look at the serpentine dances invented by Loïe Fuller. Attracted by the sculptural construction, an entity composed of textile, bamboo sticks, sounds, air and the centrifugal force of the body in an active loop, Maciejewska deconstructs this historical reference through hybrid forms produced by this construction. Invisible and visible, material and ephemeral, real and imaginary are carefully intertwined to play with what is given to see. Maciejewska had ‘negotiated with a ghost’ - the expression is hers - and played with the history of dance in order to create a visual poem, a fantastic tale: a fascinating cabinet of curiosities that is at once timeless and contemporary.

The performance was preceded by a short intimate concert (15 min)

In the Nassau Chapel, Scherzi Musicali will be performing masses and motets for 3 voices from manuscript MS 5557. This manuscript, dating from 1450-1500 and kept at KBR, is the only surviving choir book from the chapel of the Dukes of Burgundy. Its section of English composers captures a pivotal moment in the history of European music, highlighting the reception of English polyphony on the continent.
The programme has been devised in collaboration with KBR and Antonio Chemotti (KULeuven and KBR).
