🇪🇺 𝐄.𝐂.𝐂.𝐎. 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝

📍 On 21–22 September, E.C.C.O. President Elis Marçal took part in an workshop in Barcelona dedicated to key aspects of the future European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage. During the first day, participants worked in smaller groups through different user and stakeholder personas, exploring the perspectives of heritage institutions, researchers, freelance professionals, private companies and SMEs, and infrastructures and platforms. The work focused on identifying their needs, expectations and potential barriers, the value the Cloud could generate for them, the contributions different actors could bring, and the conditions required for long-term engagement.

🗣️ Across these exchanges, E.C.C.O. brought the realities of conservation-restoration firmly into the discussion, voicing the needs and challenges of individual professionals and SMEs in the field, as well as conservator-restorers working within public heritage institutions. This contribution helps ensure that the Cloud is developed around the realities of those who will ultimately engage with it, and that professional practice remains part of the conversation as its future model becomes more concrete.

🤝 On the second day, the workshop moved into plenary discussions on how to articulate the Cloud’s unique value proposition and establish the foundations for its future business model. As ECHOES advances towards turning the Cloud into a concrete and sustainable reality, E.C.C.O. is actively contributing to this process, helping ensure that the conservation-restoration profession has a strong voice in how this major European initiative develops.

🧩 in action | 𝐒𝐢𝐱 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

🇪🇪 Our Estonian member, Eesti Konservaatorite Ühing, and third-year conservation-restoration students from Pallas University of Applied Sciences are organising the XIII scientific seminar Aja kihtide vahel on 9 October in Sillamäe, Estonia. The one-day programme examines historic architecture as material evidence, lived space, and a setting for collections.

🏛️ Six presentations will address the display of sensitive objects, sustainable renovation, the reconstruction of Notre-Dame’s timber structures, archaeological remains in churches, wall-painting conservation, and 18th-century timber manor architecture. Research, use, treatment, and long-term care are brought into the same professional conversation.
💻 Participants can attend at the Sillamäe Culture and Hobby Centre or follow the seminar by video link. In-person participation costs €30 for eligible association members and €40 for non-members, while online access costs €5 and €15 respectively. Eligible students may attend in person free of charge. Registration closes on 2 October 2026.

🧩 in action | 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞

🇸🇮 Our Slovenian member, Društvo restavratorjev Slovenije, is joining forces with the University of Ljubljana’s Department of Wood Science for a one-day interactive workshop on 22 September. It centres on a practical question: how can conservator-restorers understand the physical and mechanical behaviour of wood while preserving the material they are investigating?

🔬 Participants will explore hygroscopicity, moisture, dimensional stability, and differences between wood species before carrying out supervised measurements under unstable climatic conditions. The programme connects these properties with real conservation-restoration cases, making the science directly applicable to professional decisions.

🎧 Frequency-response testing, ultrasound, and acoustic tomography will be used to assess stiffness and strength and identify concealed structural anomalies. Registration and payment close on 16 September 2026. Participation costs €70 for association members, €30 for students, self-employed cultural workers, and retired participants, and €90 for non-members.

🧩 in action | 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞, 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞

🇱🇻 Our Latvian member, Latvijas Restauratoru biedrība, organised a professional visit to conservation-restoration projects in Talsi, Ventspils, and Pope, with support from the State Culture Capital Foundation. The programme brought conservator-restorers together with architects, craftspeople, researchers, owners, and local heritage groups to examine interventions directly on site.

🔎 The route connected contrasting examples of professional practice: the recovery of an approximately 150-year-old fire-damaged timber building, newly uncovered 18th-century Baroque paintings, a restored tower clock and altarpiece, and work on historic interiors and furniture. At Pope church, laser scanning and 3D modelling supported a complex intervention on a tower affected by moisture and fungal decay.

🪵 One central challenge linked these projects: retaining as much historic material as possible while ensuring structural safety and long-term stability. Discussing evidence, treatment choices, and practical solutions with the people responsible turned individual projects into shared professional learning across disciplines.

🇫🇮 Our Finnish member, Pohjoismaisen konservaattoriliiton Suomen osasto ry (NKF-FI), has opened a call for speakers for its training days, Conservation Today and Tomorrow. Taking place on 23 and 24 November 2026 at Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka, Finland, the programme will bring current projects, methods methods, research, and professional experience into a shared learning space.

💡The themes respond directly to the association’s members, who asked for more practical experiences, case studies, and conservation stories. Proposals may present ongoing work, a particular method, thesis research, or another relevant subject. Suggestions are welcome from every specialisation, whether or not the contributor is an NKF-FI member.

🌐 Presentations may be delivered in Kotka or remotely, and the full presentation programme will be streamed. Contributions should last between 30 and 60 minutes, including approximately ten minutes for questions. Proposals and recommendations of colleagues’ work can be submitted until 9 September 2026.

🇸🇪 Our Swedish member, NKF-S, is drawing attention to a concerning trend: museums advertising positions that merge conservation-restoration with other roles or entrust specialist responsibilities to people without the required education.

⚠️ An article published by Magasin K explores how this blurring of professional roles can lower qualification requirements and salaries, replace permanent specialist positions with short-term project work, and leave collections without the continuity and expert care they require.

🛡️ Recognising conservation-restoration as a distinct, highly qualified profession is therefore not only a matter of fair working conditions. It is essential to ensuring that cultural heritage receives appropriate and sustainable care over the long term. 🧭 Specialisation is not simply a matter of professional labels. It shapes how expertise is defined and recognised, how responsibilities are assigned, and the standards by which conservation-restoration is practised. These are the questions explored in Specialisations: Trends and Challenges in Conservation-Restoration Education, jointly published by E.C.C.O. and ENCoRE.
