🧭 Specialisation is not simply a matter of professional labels. It shapes how expertise is defined and recognised, how responsibilities are assigned, and the standards by which conservation-restoration is practised. These are the questions explored in Specialisations: Trends and Challenges in Conservation-Restoration Education, jointly published by E.C.C.O. and ENCoRE.

🇮🇪 Our Irish member, Conservation Ireland, has opened registration for its 2026 Biennial Conference, taking place on 23 October at the Connacht Hotel in Galway and online.

🔄 Under the theme “Being Moved: Conservation in Conditions of Change”, the conference will bring together practice-based and research-led perspectives on how the profession responds when collections, environments, and ethical frameworks are in flux. Its three strands will address storage in motion, changing climates, and the political climate, connecting technical questions with the wider responsibilities shaping conservation decisions today.

🤝 E.C.C.O. has been pleased to contribute to activities organised within the framework of GoGreen, including its symposium on sustainable education in conservation.

💡 The final event will bring together the project’s key achievements, practical solutions, and future perspectives. The programme will address green education and the definition of green conservation, alongside more sustainable approaches to preventive and remedial conservation.

🧩 in action | 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

🎓 Our member IADA, the International Association of Book and Paper Conservators, is launching the Next Generation Talks as part of its 70th-anniversary programme, inviting students and emerging professionals to present work on art, archival, and library materials on paper. Across three sessions on 4, 11, and 18 March 2027, contributors will share projects, research approaches, and examples from their developing practice.

💡 The call welcomes creative solutions that work in practice, new but still untested answers to established problems, and projects or objects that have marked a contributor’s studies. Other ideas are also invited, allowing the programme to reflect the questions, methods, and specialisms emerging across different training institutions.

📣 Proposals should be for 15-minute presentations in English, delivered live or as a pre-recorded video, with a joint Q&A following the presentations. Students and early-career conservator-restorers can submit an abstract of up to 250 words by 31 October 2026.

🧩 in action | 𝟑𝟕 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞

🇷🇴 Our Romanian member A.C.R.RO is bringing conservation-restoration into public view through its collaboration with ICEM Tulcea on the organisation and promotion of this year’s travelling poster exhibition, Restaurarea ilustrată. Presented at Casa Avramide in Tulcea, it gathers contributions from cultural institutions, research centres, and higher education across Romania.

🔎 Through documented interventions, the posters reveal the stages, methods, and expertise involved in treating archaeological objects, historic books, furniture, ceramics, textiles, natural history specimens, and other forms of cultural heritage.

🤝 Together, these case studies form a collective portrait of conservation-restoration in Romania: precise, diverse, and grounded in shared responsibility for cultural heritage. Moving this knowledge beyond the institutions where it is produced gives the public a clearer understanding of the judgement, skill, and care each intervention requires. The exhibition opens on 31 July 2026 at 14:00 and can be visited throughout August.

🛡️ Protecting cultural heritage when disasters strike cannot rest on cultural heritage and civil protection authorities alone. PROCULTHER-4ALL, the new phase of the DG ECHO-funded initiative, is expanding this work through a whole-of-society approach involving professionals, public authorities, researchers, civil society, volunteers, private-sector actors, and citizens.

📌 Running from April 2026 to March 2028, Proculther - Project will build on seven years of European cooperation to strengthen preparedness, knowledge exchange, and coordinated action for cultural heritage at risk.

📣 Its first call for contributions is now open. Conservator-restorers, professional associations, researchers, and other stakeholders are invited to propose case studies, lessons learned, innovative practices, and research insights for the December 2026 and May 2027 editions of the PROCULTHER Technical Bulletin.

📖 Our member, Pohjoismaisen konservaattoriliiton Suomen osasto ry, has published issue 146 of Konservaattori. This edition offers a detailed look at conservation practice, including the treatment of Eero Järnefelt’s painting Maisema Kolilta, the relocation of the Finnish Aviation Museum’s collections, a project to reproduce a medieval altar textile, training focused on rescuing museum collections, and the role of insurance in safeguarding collection continuity. It also presents practical methods and materials, alongside research on condition surveys, collection-management decisions, and the role of conservator-restorers in the construction sector.

🌐 Together, these contributions connect object treatment, collection logistics, risk preparedness, research, and professional development. By sharing practical experiences and emerging knowledge, the journal supports exchange across disciplines and highlights the range of expertise involved in protecting cultural heritage. Published by the Finnish Section of the Nordic Association of Conservators, the journal primarily serves Finland’s conservation-restoration community and wider heritage sector.

🧪 Physical samples are essential to conservation-restoration research, but identifying them consistently and connecting them with related analyses, datasets, and publications across institutions can be challenging.

🔬 The Heritage Samples Registry is exploring a shared international approach to identifying and referencing heritage and natural history samples, including the potential use of unique, persistent identifiers. Developed in collaboration with and partly supported through , in which E.C.C.O. is a partner, the initiative is now seeking input from researchers, institutions, and professionals who create, study, hold, or document physical samples.

🤝 Our Austrian member, Berufsverband der Österreichischen Restauratorinnen und Restauratoren (ÖRV), brought self-employed conservator-restorers together for its third online Business Jam of 2026, focusing on the association’s professional fee recommendations.

💬 Participants discussed how to calculate realistic project costs, communicate fees clearly to clients, and apply the recommendations across different professional situations. The session transformed written guidance into a practical space for peer learning, shared experience, and greater confidence in professional decision-making.

⚖️ Appropriate remuneration is not only an economic question. It is closely connected to the time, expertise, responsibility, and working conditions required to safeguard cultural heritage properly. Through this initiative, ÖRV is helping strengthen both the sustainability of professional practice and the quality of conservation-restoration work.

📚 Our member ARP - Associação Profissional de Conservadores-restauradores de Portugal has published the latest issue of its peer-reviewed journal, Conservar Património, dedicated to “Venice Charter [re]framed: new heritage challenges”.

🔎 More than six decades after its adoption, the Venice Charter remains a fundamental reference for heritage conservation. This new issue creates space to critically examine how its principles can continue to guide practice as the field responds to changing understandings of heritage, climate pressures, contested values, territorial transformation, and emerging technologies.

🌍 By bringing together research and perspectives from across the heritage field, ARP is contributing to an essential professional conversation: how established conservation principles can remain meaningful, rigorous, and responsive to the realities of heritage today.
