The non-profit organisation Close the Gap aims to bridge the digital divide by delivering high-quality, pre-owned computers donated by European companies to schools, universities, microfinance institutes, medical centers and other social projects in developing and emerging countries. Access to ICT is essential in the developing world because it is key to improving a country’s educational and economic prospects. Close the Gap collects decommissioned computers, has the hard disks cleaned and the hardware checked and configured according to the requirements of its end-users. The computers are then shipped to the destination country, where a support and maintenance programme ensures the long-term usability of the computers. Additionally, Close the Gap started up WorldLoop to provide environmentally friendly recycling solution when the equipment has reached the end of its functional life by helping local communities establish an efficient, operational and auto-funded system for e-waste collection and recycling.

We recently installed a computer lab with 20 complete computer sets at Nairobi Boys Probation Hostel as part of our Prison Digital Literacy & Personal Development Programme, delivered in partnership with Tech Kidz Africa.

But installing the lab is only the beginning. The real impact lies in how technology builds digital skills, supports personal development, and creates opportunities for the future.

Digital inclusion means more than access to computers. It means access to opportunity.

Our team travelled to Kasulu, Western Tanzania, for a week of Training of Trainers at the Nyansha Teacher Resource Centre, home to our DigiTruck-Nyansha Innovation Hub.

Through IncluCities, we worked with Innovation Hub Managers and ICT Champions to strengthen their skills and capacity to support digital learning and innovation in their communities.

The training was another step towards building locally driven, sustainable digital inclusion.

The future of young people in Africa needs more than research. It needs places where ideas become reality.

Recently, we welcomed researchers from Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Senegal to the Close the Gap Mombasa Hub as part of the Future Fit Young Africa project by the Human Sciences Research Council.

Their visit allowed us to share what we are building around the circular economy, digital access, and skills development for young people

We recently welcomed Anne Marie and her family from Stichting Gilles, one of our valued partners and supporters.

They visited our ITAD facility in Nairobi, saw the impact of our work at Peggy Lucas, and then travelled to Mombasa to experience our new Hub, meet our team, and see what we're building.

There were conversations, stories, laughter, and a little taste of Mombasa hospitality from our Café team.

Most importantly, there was time to connect with the people and work behind the partnership.
