Close the Gap

Close the Gap Close the Gap is an international non-profit organisation that aims to bridge the digital divide. www.close-the-gap.org

The non-profit organisation Close the Gap aims to bridge the digital divide by delivering high-quality, pre-owned computers donated by European companies to schools, universities, microfinance institutes, medical centers and other social projects in developing and emerging countries. Access to ICT is essential in the developing world because it is key to improving a country’s educational and econo

mic prospects. Close the Gap collects decommissioned computers, has the hard disks cleaned and the hardware checked and configured according to the requirements of its end-users. The computers are then shipped to the destination country, where a support and maintenance programme ensures the long-term usability of the computers. Additionally, Close the Gap started up WorldLoop to provide environmentally friendly recycling solution when the equipment has reached the end of its functional life by helping local communities establish an efficient, operational and auto-funded system for e-waste collection and recycling.

As construction continues, our founder takes a walk through the site, seeing the vision slowly become reality alongside the people making it happen.

There’s still a lot more to come, but we’re excited about what’s taking shape.

Just weeks after departing Kenya, our three Digitrucks have arrived in Tanzania and are now fully installed, ready to serve communities across the Kigoma region.

These solar-powered digital learning hubs will provide teachers, students, and young people with access to technology, digital skills, and new opportunities for learning and innovation.

For us, this is what digital inclusion looks like not simply delivering technology, but ensuring it reaches the communities that need it most and becomes a catalyst for lasting change.

We look forward to seeing these Digitrucks empower the next generation of learners, innovators, and entrepreneurs across Tanzania.

Safety is the foundation of every successful workplace.

As part of the RVO Programme, our interns in Johannesburg recently completed a Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) induction, equipping them with the knowledge and practices needed to work safely, responsibly, and confidently from day one.

We believe that investing in people goes beyond building technical skills. Creating a culture of safety, accountability, and wellbeing ensures our teams are empowered to thrive while making a lasting impact.

Here's to learning, growing, and staying safe together

The real value of an accelerator begins after onboarding.

Supporting entrepreneurs isn't just about welcoming them into a portfolio. It's about walking alongside them as they grow, creating meaningful connections, opening new doors, and helping them seize opportunities that move their businesses forward.

Our Impact Accelerator team, together with Bushra from Tondox, spent time with some of our portfolio startups, including Gilitics Media, Rafiki Peps, and Studio Bela Bela, gaining a deeper understanding of their businesses, meeting their teams, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration and investment.

These visits go beyond introductions. They provide founders with the opportunity to showcase their progress, share their vision, receive valuable feedback, and build relationships with partners who can contribute to their next stage of growth.

We believe an accelerator's role doesn't end with onboarding. It continues through every conversation, every connection, and every opportunity that helps entrepreneurs build resilient, impact-driven businesses.

Because growing a startup takes more than ambitionn it takes an ecosystem that believes in your potential.

Digital inclusion has the power to create new opportunities even in places where they're needed most.

Following the success of our pilot programme at Shimo La Tewa Women's Prison and the Shimo La Tewa Borstal Institution, Close the Gap, together with our implementing partner TechKidz Africa, is expanding its digital inclusion initiative across Kenya's correctional facilities.

The programme aims to equip inmates with essential digital skills, supporting rehabilitation and preparing them for a future where digital literacy is increasingly important.

Our first milestone was training ICT officers from correctional institutions across the country. Through a train-the-trainer approach, these officers will lead digital skills training within their respective facilities, ensuring the programme continues to grow and create lasting impact.

To support this effort, Close the Gap and its partners donated computers to participating institutions, while TechKidz Africa delivered internationally recognized digital skills training for ICT officers, certified by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

We believe digital inclusion is about more than access to technology. It's about building the skills, capacity, and opportunities that enable people to learn, grow, and contribute to society.

Together, we're helping create pathways to rehabilitation through digital empowerment.

The journey of a device doesn't have to end when a business is done using it.

We were delighted to welcome the Puratos team to our Circular Economy Hub in Syokimau for a conversation about building a more sustainable future together.

By exploring an annual IT asset disposal partnership, we're taking another step toward giving technology a second life reducing e-waste while creating more opportunities for digital inclusion.

Because responsible technology doesn't end with disposal.

It begins with reimagining what's possible.

Lore Verbeeck and Sirine Sarroukh, Business Engineering students from VUB, joined Close the Gap Kenya for their international internship and have since been immersing themselves in our work with startups and entrepreneurs.

Working alongside our Impact Accelerator team, they’re gaining firsthand experience of the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs navigate while contributing their skills, ideas and fresh perspectives to the ecosystem.

Their journey has taken them beyond theory into conversations with founders, engagement with our teams, and a closer look at how businesses can create meaningful and lasting social impact.

We’re glad to have Lore and Sirine as part of the team and look forward to seeing the ideas, learning and connections that come from this experience.
