The past months have seen increasing uncertainty with the Green Deal losing momentum, while the food and agriculture sector faces mounting environmental, social and economic pressures.

Philanthropy has an essential role to play by aligning efforts, working closely with partners, and strengthening the ecosystem that supports a just transition.

The European Foundations for Sustainable Agriculture and Food (EFSAF) network will explore “Cultivating Connections” next week on 9–11 June in Berlin to reconnect, deepen collaboration and reflect on the evolving landscape of sustainable food systems in Europe.

Philanthropy can adapt, move faster, fund more flexibly and support organisations under pressure. But the present moment requires more than responsiveness. It calls for a clear strategy beyond climate-specific programmes, and instead, strengthening the foundations which make government action on climate possible.

Three shifts are particularly urgent:

- First: move upstream – defend organisational capacity, not just policies.
- Second: fund durability, not perpetual crisis response.
- Third: build a stronger European funding base.

Sonia Medina, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) explores how European philanthropy can do more to deliver for people and the planet and the three shifts that are particularly urgent, in a recent Opinion.

Find out exactly how here!

European philanthropy needs to act collectively and at scale, to think bigger than individual climate programmes and invest in civil society ecosystems and anchor climate governance within Europe’s democratic institutions.

Climate is no longer a niche issue for philanthropy.

Today, Philea and WINGS launch the Philanthropy For Climate: State of the Movement Report 2026, the first global snapshot of how signatories are integrating climate across their work.

Foundations working on health, education, poverty, gender, and community development are increasingly recognising that climate change is already affecting the people, places and outcomes they care about.

The report captures a movement that now spans:
– 30 countries
– 962 foundations
– more than $5 billion in annual spending and stewards over $31.8 billion in endowments

And the momentum is real:
– 98% of responding foundations report making progress on their climate commitments
– 88% say joining the movement strengthened their awareness and action

The findings show that climate action is no longer limited to specialist environmental funders. Foundations of all sizes and focuses have a role to play.

Adopting systems-oriented approaches to monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) raises hard questions: Where do you start? What does it require of your team and your organisation?

The Evidence and Learning Community of Practice will host “Getting Started with MEL 360“ online on 11 June, exploring MEL 360, a comprehensive online tool for systems MEL, and how it can be put to work in a philanthropic setting.

The session will offer a practical introduction to MEL 360 and to the entry points most relevant for foundations: where to start, which tools and concepts create traction early, and how to navigate the wider resource base.

The scientific and lived realities of climate and environmental degradation are increasingly stark. At the same time, the broader context for action has become more complex.

And so the dichotomy: The role of philanthropy is becoming not only more challenging, but more relevant than ever.

Our CEO, Delphine Moralis explores philanthropy, people, planet, pressure and progress (?!) in a recent Opinion.

Full story linked below!

Since the establishment of Philea in 2022, our members have been crystal clear about the challenges that would define the coming years: Climate and the environment emerged alongside equality and democracy as one of the three most important priorities for European philanthropy. Such clarity was groun...

More than $251.5 billion is currently held in donor advised funds in the United States alone, according to recent philanthropic sector analysis. Across Europe, foundation endowments hold billions more.

Meanwhile, civil society organisations are cutting programmes, laying off staff, and in some cases shutting down entirely, not because the money to support them does not exist, but because it is not moving.

This is philanthropy’s least comfortable conversation.

Aida Ridanovic, Solidarna Foundation asks why philanthropy has allowed an inconvenient fact to stay largely in the background: philanthropy is not short of capital. It is short of deployed capital.

Find out why here!

Philanthropy does not have a capital shortage. It has a deployment problem. With more than $251.5 billion held in donor advised funds while civil society organisations collapse for lack of operating support, the sector faces an uncomfortable question: what is the money waiting for?
