UN Human Rights - Europe

UN Human Rights - Europe Official page of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) – Regional Office for Europe

The UN Human Rights Regional Office for Europe seeks to advance human rights in Europe through technical assistance, advocacy, and reporting on human rights, based on the recommendations of UN human rights mechanisms. The office strives to close human rights gaps in EU legislation, budgeting and policy-making, seizing the impetus created by the Sustainable Development Agenda. In addition, it works

for the integration of a human rights approach to EU external action, migration policies and development cooperation.

El Niño, a climate pattern linked to warmer ocean temperatures and more extreme weather, is expected to emerge between this June and August. It could contribute to another exceptionally hot year, with consequences for billions of people around the world who depend on healthy oceans for their livelihoods, food security and well-being.

People who live with these impacts every day must be part of the decisions that affect their communities and their future. Their experience and knowledge should help shape decisions related to the environment and oceans governance. That is what human rights look like in practice.

⚖️ Now more than ever, the rule of law matters.

Knowing that the rules apply equally and predictably lets people live with confidence – from signing a job contract to renting a home or speaking freely in public.

When the rule of law is strong, rights are respected. People are protected from abuse of power, treated fairly and given equal access to justice and public services.

This is why, as the rule of law comes under increasing pressure, it’s so important to protect it. Doing so means protecting people’s ability to live their lives, defend their rights, and be part of a system that works for everyone.

That is what the rule of law really is – the infrastructure that allows society to move forward. Together.
