Weaving Paths project has come to an end 🍃🌳

We gathered at Shakes and Brews Café for our closing conversation, “How do green spaces foster connection?” with illustrators Ariane Ricard and María José Suárez.

We reflected together on what it means to slow down, observe, and reconnect with nature, and with each other.

Looking back over these three days: two afternoons of open-air drawing in Tenbosch Park, dozens of papers filled, new friendships formed, and now, a warm conversation to tie it all together. What started as an invitation to draw became something much bigger — a shared moment of presence and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us along the way 🎨

We returned to the arboretum for one more afternoon of sketching, drawing, and quiet connection with the trees around us, joined again by illustrators Ariane Ricard and María José Suárez.

Two days in, and it’s clear: there’s real magic in slowing down together outdoors, pencil in hand, no pressure 🍃

We gathered in Tenbosch Park today with pencils, sketchbooks, and open minds, drawing the arboretum with illustrators Ariane Ricard and María José Suárez. ✏️🌳

There’s something special about slowing down and really looking at the world around us — tree textures, the shapes of leaves.

Grateful to everyone who joined us and made it such a warm, creative afternoon 🍃

We’re excited to welcome two illustrators to our open-air drawing picnic this week as a part of the Weaving Paths project!

🌿 María José Suárez
María José is a Chilean visual artist and illustrator. She is interested in graphic storytelling and its many forms of expression, exploring themes such as personal and historical memory, our relationship with nature, and travel narratives, through a blend of research and creation.

🌿 Ariane Ricard
Ariane is an illustrator and comic artist based in Angoulême, France. Through her work, she explores dynamics of contrast around nature, q***r identity, and modern myths, with a detailed and illustrative approach.

Join Ariane and María José for our open-air drawing picnics at Tenbosch Park on 10 & 11 July between 15-19H, and for a conversation with them on 12 July at Shakes and Brews Café at 15H.

Come meet them, draw alongside them, and hear about their creative journeys! ✏️🌳

Join us for a series of open-air drawing sessions and a community gathering that invites us to observe, create, and reconnect with the living landscapes around us as a part of Weaving Paths Project.

The Fair at the Festival of the New European Bauhaus was about the projects and the people behind them.

We are happy to share more projects with you that left a real impression on us:

🏙️ Never Never School
A space for dialogical learning, utopian speculation, and research about cities, and a prototype for 21st-century education. Since 2018, the Spolka collective has built a platform for individuals and teams working across artistic, design, and social disciplines, using design as a tool for imagination and dialogue about possible futures. It also acts as an incubator, helping participants turn ideas into real, locally embedded projects, while challenging traditional teacher–student and expert–layperson hierarchies.

🏗️ Kodoken: The Architecture School for Kids (こどものけんちくがっこう )
A community-rooted educational programme from Japan, built around “people-building, thing-making, and experience-building.” Through hands-on activities, children learn about architecture and the living environment, addressing a gap in how kids learn about “shelter,” one of life’s most basic needs.

📊 Comic Survey Lab
A community of researchers and practitioners reimagining survey methodologies through comics and visual storytelling. Their aim: making data collection more immersive and engaging, while staying accessible to people across different literacy levels, cognitive abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

♻️ Surfaces Made From Olive Waste ()
Formed in Cyprus, Pit-Board transforms discarded olive pits into durable, table tops and panels. But it’s not just about materials. The initiative actively brings together both Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities, ensures equal participation across gender lines, and builds sustainable local supply chains.

We visited the Fair at the Festival of the New European Bauhaus, held from 9 to 13 June 2026, with great enthusiasm, meeting inspiring people and discovering wonderful projects from across Europe 🇪🇺

At the heart of the Fair was the NEB Academy Piazza, here are a few projects that caught our attention:

🌿 Urban Bloomers (Florence, Italy)
A research initiative bringing together universities, local government, and small enterprises to co-design a more biodiverse, climate-resilient city. Working with schools in Florence, the project is developing 3D-printed wall installations that host stress-resistant plants — turning building facades into tools for biodiversity and climate adaptation.

🌊 (Vienna, Austria)
In September 2024, Storm Boris caused record flooding along the Danube, leaving over 100,000 tonnes of sediment behind in Vienna. This project looks at what that sediment carries with it and what happens when dams and built-up land get in the way of a river’s natural flow.

🛠️ Urgency Toolkit () (Turin, Italy)
Developed by designer Alessandra Pandolfi during her residency for Earthrise 25 – Design for a Living Planet, in collaboration with the San Salvario Neighbourhood House. The toolkit supports communities in collectively defining new norms for shared life: a replicable model for activating civic transformation in different contexts.

Beinsitu hosted the first edition of the Sustainability Forum for Emerging Practices: Urban Agriculture, a New European Bauhaus Satellite Event!

Four inspiring projects and initiatives were brought together to talk about gardens, land, and community. 🌿

We heard from Boğaçhan Dündaralp about Kuzguncuk Bostan, Istanbul’s garden saved by decades of community resistance. Mario Margani shared the story of Giardino di Dafne, a young community forest in Sicily, born out of drought and collective care.

Mariana Pinto & José Fuentes took us to Guatemala’s northern lowlands, where Q’eqchi’ communities are resisting the spread of oil palm plantations. And Bediz Yılmaz spoke about Piyalepaşa Garden which is one of the last surviving bostans in “the city of bostans,” and what it means to hold onto living heritage.

Different places, different struggles, but the same threads kept coming back: community, commons, resistance, and the urgent need to rebuild our relationship with nature, food, and each other.
