Beinsitu hosted the first edition of the Sustainability Forum for Emerging Practices: Urban Agriculture, a New European Bauhaus Satellite Event!

Four inspiring projects and initiatives were brought together to talk about gardens, land, and community. 🌿

We heard from Boğaçhan Dündaralp about Kuzguncuk Bostan, Istanbul’s garden saved by decades of community resistance. Mario Margani shared the story of Giardino di Dafne, a young community forest in Sicily, born out of drought and collective care.

Mariana Pinto & José Fuentes took us to Guatemala’s northern lowlands, where Q’eqchi’ communities are resisting the spread of oil palm plantations. And Bediz Yılmaz spoke about Piyalepaşa Garden which is one of the last surviving bostans in “the city of bostans,” and what it means to hold onto living heritage.

Different places, different struggles, but the same threads kept coming back: community, commons, resistance, and the urgent need to rebuild our relationship with nature, food, and each other.

Huge thanks to our speakers, our moderators, and everyone who joined us live. ✨

Meet our fifth guest speaker: Bediz Yılmaz

Urban farmer and ecological advisor, currently working alongside the gardening family keeping one of Istanbul’s last historic bostans alive.

Bediz will be sharing the story of Piyalepaşa Garden, a working vegetable garden next to a 16th-century mosque in Istanbul, and one of the few remaining traces of a city that historians once called “a city of bostans.”

The garden survived decades of urbanisation and industrialisation, but in 2015, a municipal project threatened to turn it into a parking lot. In response, the Piyalepaşa Historic Garden Solidarity movement emerged, combining the right to the city, food sovereignty, and heritage preservation into a single, grounded struggle. The movement didn’t just defend the garden, it also farmed it.

Today the garden stands at a crossroads: its long functional past has come to an end, and its promising future has not yet fully begun.

Meet our fourth guest speaker: Mario Margani

Curator, writer, and culture worker based between Berlin and Enna — and co-founder of Garage Arts Platform in Enna and member of the collective n-leben, based in Berlin.

Mario will be sharing the story of Giardino di Dafne, a project born in March 2025 in Enna, Sicily, at the edge of the Natural Reserve Lago di Pergusa.

In the midst of the climate crisis and lack of water that hit the local community and entire Sicily in 2023 and 2024, seven local associations from different fields such as art, agroecology, education, books, politics, and religion came together around a simple but powerful act: planting a small forest in an abandoned public green area and keeping it alive. In its first year, the garden has hosted workshops, film screenings, music, performances, readings, and community gatherings.

Today, Giardino di Dafne is the only public green space in Enna open 24/7 thanks to the respectful use and care of its citizens.

It is a story about what culture, community, and a few dozen trees can do in a time of crisis.

Meet our speakers: Mariana Pinto & José Fuentes

Mariana and José are urban ethnographers and agroecology consultants, co-founders of Clak Clak,  Research and Design.

Since 2023, they have collaborated as research-for-advocacy consultants on the impacts of oil palm expansion in Guatemala’s northern lowlands.

At our forum, they’ll be sharing their research from Guatemala’s northern lowlands, where the rapid expansion of oil palm plantations is reshaping entire territories. Industrial logic is displacing Q’eqchi’ collective spaces (communal land used for food, care, and shared life) and replacing them with privatized enclosures. Communities are resisting. Mariana and José are documenting to support the resistance.

Meet our second guest speaker: Hannah Wiker Wikström

One of the founders of local organisation called Omställning Skärholmen and the project Weather Station Skärholmen which is a cultural and urban cultivation programme that connects art, community, and transition issues in neighborhood.

Weather Station Skärholmen brings together cultural activities and hands-on practice around urban food production, resilience, and the real work of local transition. Through study circles, workshops, artist residencies, and experiments with a forest garden in the local forest, the project builds something rare: a long-term, community-rooted response to global challenges — grown from the ground up.

Join us on 13 June!

Meet our guest speaker: Boğaçhan Dündaralp

Boğaçhan is the founder of ddrlp office and the author of Anatomy of an (Architectural) Design Process. His projects have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe, Aga Khan, and Iakov Chernikov Awards and were awarded by national architecture awards and competitions. He took part in international events including the London–Istanbul International Exchange Program and the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial.

But what he’ll be bringing to our forum goes beyond the portfolio.

Boğaçhan is one of the architects behind the Kuzguncuk Community Garden Project, a decades-long collective initiative to safeguard a historic neighbourhood garden in Istanbul. Kuzguncuk Bostanı, originally known as İlya’s Garden, has been under the threat of development for more than 35 years. Its green space status in the zoning plan was removed and reclassified. The residents of Kuzguncuk have so far succeeded in preventing all of these attempts.

In 2010, a group of architects and Kuzguncuk residents prepared a conservation project for the garden. Although the threat of development has not completely disappeared, the residents of Kuzguncuk continue their struggle, in collaboration with the municipality, to protect the garden and sustain its public and agricultural uses.

Join us on Saturday, 13 June!

The second day of the workshop was all about production!

We explored different versions of picture books — cutting, drawing, designing, and even transforming the characters, illustrated by the participants, into buttons ✂️🖍️

Creativity was everywhere, and it was so rewarding to see all the inspiring works that emerged by the end of the day 🤩

Atölyenin ikinci günü tamamen üretime odaklandık!

Farklı resimli kitap versiyonlarını keşfettik — kestik, çizdik, yazdık ve hatta katılımcılarımızın kendi tasarladıkları karakterleri rozete dönüştürdük ✂️🖍️

Yaratıcılık her yerdeydi ve günün sonunda ortaya çıkan ilham verici işleri görmek gerçekten çok keyifliydi 🤩
