What better way to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity than by bringing people together around forgotten ingredients, culinary heritage, and the future of food? Last Friday, at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Tasting the Forgotten: Reviving Forgotten Foods for Sustainable Food Systems welcomed chefs, researchers, policymakers, innovators, and cultural voices for a day of thoughtful dialogue and discovery.

We sincerely thank all the speakers and participants who joined the Collective Action on Forgotten Foods event, Tasting the Forgotten.
A key message echoed by all speakers was the importance of Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS) in strengthening our food systems.
The discussions highlighted that advancing the NUS sector requires a multi-stakeholder and tiered approach built on collaboration across communities, policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and market actors.

The panelists emphasized that NUS play a vital role in improving nutrition and strengthening local food systems. NUS should be integrated into national food and agricultural policies, while also benefiting from value addition and access to diverse markets, including diaspora and international markets.
Importantly, NUS are not only nutritious foods but also functional foods. This was strongly reflected in the work of chefs and food innovators designing recipes and cuisines that incorporate these indigenous ingredients.

Participants also stressed that the promotion and commercialization of NUS must not make them unaffordable for the communities that cultivate and preserve them. The heritage and cultural significance of these foods must remain central, and be for the benefit of the communities.

At The Food Bridge, we have been privileged to work with and meet incredible women doing impactful and inspiring work in the agrofood sector. 🌾💚
Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honor the millions of women who are the true custodians of our food heritage. They plant the seeds, work the fields, nurture biodiversity, preserve indigenous food knowledge, and sustain our agrofood systems—often while receiving the least economic recognition for their labor.
Women make up a significant share of the workforce in the agrofood sector, yet their contributions remain largely unseen and undervalued.

Today we celebrate the women who are not always visible but who quietly carry the immense responsibility of sustaining families, communities, and ultimately humanity. 🌍✨
To every woman farmer, food processor, market trader, cook, innovator, and food entrepreneur—we see you, we honor you, and we celebrate you today and always. 💐

🌍 Today, on International Migrants Day, we honor the millions of migrants whose labour keeps Europe moving — even when their faces are often hidden and their voices unheard. 👩🏽‍🌾👨‍🍳👨‍🔧
From farms and seas to food factories, restaurants, hotels and beyond ; migrants are essential workforce for our food systems and service industries. 🍎🛠️🍽️🌊
📊 Did you know?
- In the EU agricultural sector alone, according to Oxfam an estimated 2.4 million seasonal workers (many of whom are migrants), help plant, harvest and process our fruits and vegetables every year 💪🌱. These are only the documented seasonal workers, and the real number is likely much higher.
- In hospitality sector in some regions (like greater Paris), immigrants account for around 40 % of hotel and restaurant staff, keeping the cafes and kitchens operational.
✨ Despite rising anti-migration rhetoric, their dedication shows us every day that our communities are stronger because of their presence — not in spite of it. To all the migrants making meaningful contributions-
🤝 We see you.
🙏 We know you.
❤️ We thank you.
Your hands shape the food we eat, your skills support our services and your presence enrich our societies. ✨
Let’s celebrate them not just today 🌐✊
